Bond was born in 1934 (and died in March this year) so he would have been only 37 when this footage was filmed.

Why on earth did this fellow "want" to write a Lear" when he disagrees with what Shakespeare said in his King Lear which is in itself a misunderstanding since Shakespeare doesn't 'speak' in his plays. He writes a new play using a Lier plot. Doesn't he know that Shakespeare only wrote two plots of his own... What disrespect , arrogance and lack of understanding this person shows. This man is just riding on the coat tails of a great artist to help his own effort on. How many performances has his "Lear" had?

It’s an interesting interview. But strangely I was drawn to the facial hair of both men. Did we really have those sideburns in the early seventies, and the answer would be yes.

1971: EDWARD BOND on His New LEAR | Review | Writers and Wordsmiths | BBC Archive 0836am 6.12.24 edward lear was certainly the motivating factor to have this guy direct a new rendition of the aforementioned Shakespearean classic? unbearable life to live? all you need to do is think of him as the prisoner and take it from there.... as all Shakespeare's asses (focus of audience attention) are.

The post-war hippy/Rousseau view of the world. So nutty, it caused him to engage in a dangerous comb-over.
