One of the great stories in American sports! Like the Green Bay Packers; a community owned team operating on a shoestring budget taking on the big boys and winning. My uncle raced outboard hydroplanes and in 1969 I went with him to the national championships in Seattle. While there we went to the Atlas Van Lines race team headquarters hoping to see the boats. They were behind a chainlink fence big as life. While my uncle was telling me about the Thunderboats ( I was 13) a man came over to the fence and my uncle said, " we are just looking" . The man said come around and I'll let you in. As we walked to the gate my uncle told me, "That is Bill Muncey, one of the greatest drivers". He spent 20 minutes with us and was a very nice man. Along with Gar Wood he is a legend of the sport.
