Nearly 40 years after making its debut at Lord's, India won its first test match and series in England. This historic test victory was due to an outstanding performance by India's spinners, led by BS Chandrasekhar.

Glorious win. I remember that evening while coming back home with my father saw some cricket lovers forced a pan shop owner to switch the nob 0f his radio to shortwave mode(those days abroad sports matches broadcast through shortwave radio station) to listen running commentary of oval test match and we stopped walking, when Great Abid ALI hits the balls through cover region everyone shouted and the panwalla was shouting and crying. "Jeet gaya'. What a great moment ! thanks for this video.

I was 11 years old and we were glued to to the transistor. When each England wicket fell, we knew a wicket was gone when we can't hear the commentator due to crowd's huge noise. I vividly remember Chandra's bowling. What a performance! That was true cricket. You brought back my nostalgia sir.

No fuss, no big bucks, played pure passion and patriotism - I listened to this victory on BBC radio and cheered each wicket. Mind blowing performance by Chandra!! What a day!! Real and true winners!!

There was no telecast those days, only radio commentary, and I can still recall the joy when Abid Ali hit the boundary.Was a 11 year old kid then but seems like yesterday.We were all so tense around the radio.

One of the great memories from my childhood. Also, the series win in WI, then 406/4, and 83 WC. Ajit Wadekar was a great man who is not celebrated enough.

I don't even though Indian team had series victories in the West Indies, England , New Zealand in the 70s how were they considered perenteders and outsiders in 1983 world cup. How biased the white cricketing nations were.
@GAURANGMHATRE3 жыл бұрын
Test matches and ODI are differnt game though. India's performance in World Cup in 75 & 79 were poor. Also, the spin quartet that helped india win test series in England & West Indies had retired till 1983 world cup.
@sknn497 Жыл бұрын
So you think that the West Indies would have had a different view from the "white cricketing nations"? There was very little to suggest that India were a major contender at the 1983 world cup-in fact, the biased white nations that you refer to would have regarded the West Indies as virtual certainties, which would seem to contradict your view that skin colour was a factor in assigning potential winners. Well done to India in overcoming those doubts but any cricket fan no matter what nationality would have regarded their triumph as a major shock.

In fact Kim Hughes, the Aussie skipper said even before the first match that he considered India to be the dark horses who could surprise everyone. Prophetic!!
