My first match. My brother was at I.I.T., Madras and we 2 younger brothers stayed in his hostel room (traveled from Bangalore). We would get up every day at 4:30 AM and be outside the stadium by 5:30 AM. The gates would open between 9.30 - 10 AM, and at the head of the queue, we would get good seats with shades, so that when the afternoon arrived, we could still be covered in shade and enjoy. One day we were late, and we got exposed to the blazing sun. By evening, we were thoroughly sun-burnt, and had to use lotions in the evening!

Durrani used to be called sixer durrani those says. Only one who will hit six boldly those days. Very good spinner also. Would have been automatic choice for odis and 20'20s if he hadbeen playing now. Test players were paid rs.2000 per test those day. India played 2 tests in 1972 and 3 tests in 1973. People used to play test cricket to get bank clerical job under sports quota. Viswanath was empoyed in sbi.
@positive1205 жыл бұрын
There were no odis or 20 20 those days. There used to be rest day between 3rd and 4th day. I remember a benefit match was held to help durrani to overcome his financial difficulties. Those days playing cricket for india was a sort of sacrifice for the country and parents used to discourage anybody who used to play cricket.

I was a 10 year old. My friend taught me how to bat and other rules of the game. Though ours is a small town cricket was quite popular. Men were glued to their transistors throughout the series. My Dad was jubilant at the series victory and so were my friends and their elders. All that I could understand was that Wadekar beat England twice in a row. Viswanath scored a century. Pataudi came back. From then onwards we became cricket addicts. Cutting news items from news papers and magazines and preserving them, hearing commentary religiously, getting by heart the scores of batsmen and bowling statistics of bowlers, joining either of Viswanath or Gavaskar camps and so on. Innocent era. Golden memories.

A true great - mercurial, magical, magnetic. His bowling especially against left handers could be lethal - it was his quick dismissal of Clive Lloyd and Gary Sobers (who he had much in common with) which set up India's famous victory in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in 1971. The late great Christopher Martin-Jenkins caught a glimpse of Durrani when MCC played Central Zone on the 1976 tour, as he describes in his book of that tour, and was suitably impressed with the albeit fading aura of stardust and glamour which still surrounded him whenever he walked on to a cricket field.

Yes, I have heard stories from the elder generation about how he came in to bat, injured, with one arm in a sling, and hit Pocock for a one handed six at the Eden Gardens...a thrilling match that India won by 27 runs if my memory serves me right. With Bedi going great guns, it was difficult to justify the inclusion of another left arm spinner, and he would have not made it as a batsman alone...he thus had to make way for others

Pataudi's late cut & cover drive would be a pleasure to watch as well as Wadejar's square cut. On demand from the crowd Durango hits sixer without any effort. @Mr. Sharma is Sharma s ur real name....silly North Indian...still using caste name...don't u fell shame... ofcourse South Indians always Gentle
@sasharma55615 жыл бұрын
@@markkarthik5323 gentle is another name of cowardness. Indian army constistues 75 percent of north indians with 25 percent marathas and gorkhas. South India takes away all industrial zones and enjoy AC jobs whereas highly educated north indians are kept to die of unemployment or in battlefield saving black asses of south indians

"After the formalities of a non-existent opening attack" Thanks ED Solkar! India's pace attack consisted of three overs from Messers Solkar and Gavaskar (that's the total of both bowlers) before Bedi, Chandra and Prasanna came into the attack.

And then the catch Durani took of Chris Old, by running from Midon to Cover. Pat Pocock and NOrman Gifford, bowled continuous Maidenhighlights. overs from both ends with Pataudi and Durrani batting. In between, both would hit huge sixes. My first test match witnessed. I was just 14 then. Happy to see the highlights.

Oh i miss those good old golden days. I read the comments with awe and all of them were gems. Pongal 1973 was a special because the AIHS govt exams were over in Dec72 (17 yrs then) and had to wait till June73 to enter PUC. This was the second match i listened to radio commentary all five days, the first one was the calcutta match. Every morning on match days i used to get ready and get glued to radio with a score card, and daily evening go for discussion about that days play with ectfriends . I remember writing down MAK Patudi hitting 73 and S. Durrani’s 38 both of them hitting sixes. What a match to go one up. Dreamed of seeing a match at Chepauk which came true in later years when i think it was David Gower, Mike Brearly, Ian Botham and Pocock all in England Team. See the clip and the comments the audience with binoculars and transistors, packed full and all audience were glued to their seats till the last ball is bowled not like nowadays when people leave quite some time before the last ball is bowled for t gat day. We used to get lot of hard paper hoods with rubber bands to see the matching protecting the eyes from bright light and get score cards free from advertisers outside the ground. After the match we used to see lot of cars plying on Edward Elliots Road (now Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai) before and after the match, most of the cars fully packed .
