That Esso commercial at about the 40 minute mark is great piece of history. Didn't know Canadians drove their convertibles with the top down in the winter. Total hardcore. How'd we get so soft?

Isn't it a pleasure to watch a vintage hockey game without the ads on the dasher boards and the ice itself. Also want to point out that very few NHL players at the time wore a helmet when playing. A much different game in a long ago era. But entertaining. Moreover, when the game finished, you have a brief game wrap up from the "hosts", then it's good night everyone from Hockey Night In Canada!!
@BillMorganChannel3 жыл бұрын
So true! The defensemen did not try to obliterate the forwards thus no helmets and smaller skilled players!

I had a personal boycott against Sony for being the first on the boards. Didn't buy a Sony product for 20 years. Unfortunately there was no internet at the time to help gain any traction from others. The game was slower back then.

@@BillMorganChannel I saw Bill Masterton play vs the Rangers at the old MSG on 12/27/67. He died a few months later after hitting his head on the ice. Making helmets mandatory was the smartest thing the NHL ever did.
@thomastherriault61999 ай бұрын
Yup. They used to play like everybody had no helmets. Moreover, the padding was soft.
@pocobull9 ай бұрын
@@jaymorgenthal9479 you don't actually think the NHL mandated helmets over player safety do you? The insurance companies that covered players medical bills were going to refuse to provide coverage to NHL teams unless they mandated helmets. So the NHL owners, not wanting to cover those expenses themselves agreed, and helmets were mandated. But it was basically a moot point, as about 70% of NHL players were already wearing helmets by 1979, when the rule came into affect. Even without the rule, by the early to mid-80's, 99% of NHL players would have been wearing helmets, which is what it was in any event, as the rule was grandfathered.

Brian "Spinner" Spencer with the hat-trick just one month after his father was shot and killed by the RCMP. Brian's father was upset that the local station was showing another game instead of the Leafs. He drove to the station with a gun to get them to switch to his son's game, but they couldn't. Roy Spencer was gunned down when he opened fire on the police.

My favorite thing from this era was the device which was lowered from the scoreboard at Maple Leaf Gardens which presented the Canadian and American flags at 3:48. It had a blower which unfurled the flags and made them ripple just like they were outside in the breeze.

CBC didn't even think to preserve these older games in color. Our tax dollars at work.
@Lava19643 жыл бұрын
Before the late 1970s, few North American TV networks thought sports events were worth preserving. Those that were, were often preserved on kinescopes--which were usually black and white.

Nobody had VCRs back then. There was no reason to preserve those tapes. They just the used same tape over and over.

I think it was close to this time that CBC was considering replacing Ward Cornell as host of the Saturday night telecasts. There was one broadcaster the network had at the time from Sudbury who possibly could have done a good job, but he was supposedly turned down because of his mustache. That man was Alex Trebek. He was turned down in favour of Dave Hodge.

On 2 separate occasions Pgh., Penna. had franchise in long since-extinct Amer. Basketball Assn. (A.B.A.) in late-1960s/early-1970s. Franchise had 2 team names:Pipers/Condors. It folded after 1971-1972 A.B.A. season/"Iron City" (Pgh., Penna.) has been without major league hoops team since 🏀. I think it's time that Pgh., Penna. gets N.B.A. team. After that D'lphns at Ch'fs ll OT A.F.C. Div. Pl'yffs game on X-Mas Day 🎄, 1971, N.F.L. w'ld create p'lcy which there'd be no g'ms pl'yd in that league on Christmas Day (December 25) itself.
