Pittsburgh Penguins

"This is an organization of stories. Not just championships, but stories."
Throughout the first fifty years of the franchise, the Pittsburgh Penguins grew and fought through a multitude of adversities. At one point, winning the Stanley Cup seemed like a pipe dream. Through all the tumultuous twists and turns, the Penguins are one of the most successful franchises over the past half-century.

I will never understand how that team only won two Cups. A power play of Lemieux-Jagr-Francis-Murphy-Mullen. That’s five hall of famers. I would put those early 90s Pens squads up against anyone - the 80s Oilers, the 70s Habs, the Islanders dynasty, there isn’t a team in hockey history you could say they’d have no chance against.

@@jreiland07 That baffles me too. All that talent and they never won another title in the Lemieux era. I think injuries and illness played a part though. Mario went through constant back problems, anemia and cancer. And Kevin Stevens was never the same after that injury in 1993. I feel like they should've made the finals in at least 1993,1996 and 2001.

Die hard Penguins fan here from South Carolina! All because I chose a Koho Street Revolution hockey stick with Mario Lemieux’s name on it. That was in 1994. Also I was lucky enough to be at Crosby’s comeback game against the Islanders. Our tickets were randomly bought in August for our 1 year wedding anniversary present. We had no idea at that time how perfect this game would be to see.

I had that stick. Kept it for 30 years (the blade was about an inch wide when I handed it to my son) and he left it on the porch one day and it was gone. I'd give anything to have that stick back. Mario was my hero when I was a kid.

When the Igloo was padlocked, the team had to find a place to practice. My mom worked at Rostraver Gardens and I was very young, 4 in '75. I don't remember too much, but I do know I wasn't allowed to go into the rink area when the team was practicing. I was allowed to scavenge for pucks in the bleachers afterwards, though. I still have two that I found back in the day. The team was gracious enough to sign a sheet of paper my mom sent down to the locker room at their last practice at the Gardens. She took it with her when she left that job. We also have a packet with photos of all the players, coaches, management and ownership they handed out. Oh, the hair and moustaches! Colin Campbell had a Prince Valliant haircut.

No offense to 'Badger Bob' but his replacement, just happened to be the best coach in NHL history. Just because they blew it against the Isles, didn't mean the party was over but sometimes you find yourself in a confrence that is very, very tough. The Rangers were on a mission, Lemaire brought the trap and Pittsburg's window closed...for 10 to 15 years. Then they won the lottery, literally! Not much sympathy coming your way at this point ;) I'm sorry but besides Mario's Lukemia. The Penguins were a very lucky franchise, starting with the Mario pick. That's not to say, they didn't rpe Hartford and didn't make many more, smart moves, over the years but to win the cup more than 2 years in a row, takes legendary management and a lot of good luck along the way. Cheers from Canada

@@bmoshareholderappleshareho855I know one thing I’m going to say is considered heresy 😏 but as a kid in the 80s - Gretzky never impressed me. I mean, yeah, he scored a lot of points, but he just didn’t seem to have any personality & he wasn’t good looking at all. (Such was my train of thought as an 11 year old girl) but I immediately noticed Mario. It might sound stupid to say but, besides his brilliance on the ice, he just had this aura around him. Mario was MAJESTIC. I had relatives in Pittsburgh and they were telling me all about Jaromir and he had IT too; the only way I can describe Jags is RADIANT. If you weren’t lucky enough to see him play then it’s a shame, because his smile, his personality and his ability to take over a game - he lit up the entire arena. To me they were both the “complete package” in a way Gretzky never was. I feel blessed that I was able to watch them in their prime playing together at the Civic Arena. I never saw any other teammates in hockey who had that kind of chemistry on the ice before them - and I’ve never seen it since. I’ve always felt like Jags never received the credit he deserved for how dominant he was in the late 90s, but I’m thrilled his 68 is hanging up right alongside Mario’s 66. My aunt in Pittsburgh said it best: “You don’t think of 66 without 68, and you don’t think of 68 without 66. It’s always going to be Mario and Jaromir” 😎

Hello et Bonjour, from Montreal Quebec. Hope everything is well in the Steel City and the home of Film Director, George A. Romero( R.I.P.), who brought us the first Popular, modern,(non-Voo-doo) Zombie film! The director of Night of the living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, (along with dozens of wonderful, genre defining films), is a personal Hero! We can't mention Romero without at least bringing up the Master of Monster Movie effects, Tom Savini. A genius in his own right and another Pittsburg native, he created the original look of Jason Voorhees. The Slashing, Goalie mask wearing Monster, from 'Friday the 13' and many more! Here is where I would love to say Mr. Savini put the Hockey mask on Jason but alas, that would only occur in part 3 and Tom was working on a different, Blood drenched film at that time. So although I am a Montreal Canadiens fan, My favorite NFL team has been The Steelers, since the mid 80's. I hope to one day visit your city and catch a NFL, or NHL game. Maybe even the Pirates too :) Salut from Montreal (Home of the team that won the first and last games, at the Igloo, In Pittsburg! (not certain if the documentary mentions this). Sorry but we haven't had much to cheer about here lately. Although we have our Playoff wins over the Crosby led Penguins, to be proud of. Nothing personal, mes amis (my friends).
