They were actually rated at 365 hp. As well as 500 lb ft of torque. Don't know if that's an exhaust leak or loud mufflers, but I'd replace the exhaust system with something nice and quiet, those cars were supposed to ride silent.

460 ci (7.5 L) V8 One of the best Big Block Ford ever built. My uncle had 76 Lincoln Continental coupe. It had 750 double pumper Holly. Originally came from the factory. The fastest he had up too. Is 135 MPH. All stock. It will spin the highest gear without losing power. Instead gain speed. C6 transmission 3 speed. Torque monster Big Block lol. Also the toughest Big Block he said. The cars he had anyway lol

They were rated at 365 gross hp and 500 gross lb ft of torque, meaning the engine produced that on an engine stand with no accessories attached to it. In 1972 they switched to measuring in net HP, which measured the engine with all of the accessories hooked up. Measuring by net hp decreases the gross hp by about 15-25%. So in reality these engines made in the upper 200 net hp range (if they weren’t underrated which I’ve heard) which was still very respectable. And you’re right about the exhaust, my ‘71 is whisper quiet unless I really get on it. It’s got such a nice low growl to it at idle too.

@@dawson674 Yes they did change from gross to net in 1972, but they also dropped the compression drastically in 1972. The 1971 had 10 1/2 to 1, in 1972 it went down to around 8.2 to 1, so even if the rating system hadn’t changed power would still be down in 1972.

My dad had a 1971 Mark III. Such a nice car! The issue with the windows is common.

It sounds like a tractor! not a Continental. Fix that noise. Otherwise a very good example of a well maintained Classic. The early Mark series were and still are some of the most beautiful cars in America ever designed. I would have to include the 1967 Eldorado in this league too.

Exhaust leak to loud. Those cars were supposed to be silent.

I remember my father had one in '69, maroon with black top (weren't they all). Perfectly silent. I remember thinking "how can anything be wrong in the world when you have a car like this". One thing I learned later; the front sheet metal is entirely welded together. Difficult repairs.

yeah exhaust is waay too loud, im 61 and rode in a few of these and they and most cars of this type back then were really quiet as they were supposed to be. Sounds like someone put an aftermarket set of turbo mufflers or something on it. I had a '63 Buick Lesabre that was ten times quieter than this. Runs good though.

The Cartier clock's were know for problems you can get new guts for it. Windows were problems too especially back ones that slid into roof.

I have this very car but mine is incredibly quiet! This sounds like it needs exhaust repair!

My parents had one, it had mufflers and suppressors; if yours is loud something is very wrong.

You mean the Continental Mark 3 dont you? I have only seen 1 other Continental that color. I worked for the Mercury dealeeship we had a customer with a Mark 3 that color. You have a beautiful Mark 3. They had more pickup than later Marks.

Hey guys! Some of the 71s got the left over 460 Police Interceptor motors. 425HP!!! You WANT that sound and look for the Dove-C heads as the indicator.

Why would you have to rebuild a double balanced engine?

No! Not Lincoln! It’s a Continental! Lincoln never sold the Mark III as Lincolns! See original brochures! You won’t find "Lincoln“ name but Continental. Of course we all know they are Lincolns. But again, they never where sold as Lincolns! Greetings from a Continental Mark III owner in Germany
