1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode 220 V8TV
There is a lot going on with the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am for ‘71, not the least of which is how cool the car looks. Pontiac engineers really did their homework to help make sure these cars could still offer high performance in spite of impending regulations that would otherwise choke the bird out.

What a car, I had a '71 over here in england in 1985, two holley 850's roller cam, dana rear axle, just a touch of the throttle would send it flying toward the horizon like a scalded cat! the local cops were not impressed with my choice of ve-hicle lmao!! Only downside, it drank more fuel than a fighter plane, loud pipes, lead feet....,,,

Still remember seeing a black 70 1/2 formula with a ram air goat motor and a 4speed on the cover of high performance pontiac magazine (in 85ish) and I was mesmerized. It seemed like the baddest musclecar period. At 15 years old that stuff gets into your DNA.

MuscleCarOfTheWeek Oh the glory days. A more optimistic, simpler, and happier time for most Americans and it showed in the cars that GM made back then. That car is incredible! Thanks for the upload. I was only a 6 y/o child at the time but I vaguely remember that one of my relatives had a car almost exactly like this! We have YT and the internet today but so many others things were really better back then.

Beautiful car, I would like to correct you about the hood scope, it is functional, it has an electric solenoid that will open up the flap when the gas peddle was floured. On years 70-72, after 72 till 75 it still could be functional but you had to manually remove the factory rivets holding it closed, because of federal regulations. And Pontiac knew it's owners would make that mod!

Always loved that color over the white cars with the blue stripe. They should have had that color on the 69 T/As . But my favorite T/A was the 79 Tenth anniversary edition. Even though they were gutless boat anchors, they just looked so Damm cool with the silver interior and the bird all the way to the A piller.

I’ve owned 3 Firebirds in my life…A 69 350 HO…..A 75 TA 400 CI…..And my current 2002 TA Convertible… F2 was the best Firebird ever made. The dash, guages, shaker hood, spoilers with ground effects really put that car together well and the sales proved it…Although the 75 TA was choked of power with the converter, installing free flow dual exhaust solved that problem…I drove 50,000 miles the first year I had it…But the 455HO of course was the ultimate……

During the early 1980s to the end of the 90s my friend owned a unique 1971 Trans Am. It was a 'triple blue' TA. Lucerne Blue exterior, blue interior and factory blue tint glass. It had 1 option, an AM radio. The Rally 2s were replaced with no cost option substitute Honeycombs and option-delete console. Yep, the TH400 was column-shifted. Everyone thought it was a fake TA. In 1986 he wanted another car so I bought his '74 400 4 speed TA (26,000 original miles) and he bought a nearly full optioned '73 SD TA. I frequently drove his SD. Nice car but I wish I could have owned that '71 triple blue TA.

1972 was the last year for the functional hood scoop with the flap that would open up when you floored the gas pedal. The scoop had solenoids in it. The reason why they started doing this was because of noise pollution mandate from the sound of the four barrel carburetor sucking in air. The 1973 scoop had a fake scoop that was sealed off. My brother had a 72 trans am 455 ho . I remember sitting in the passenger seat and he would floor the gas pedal and the flap would open up and you could also see the gas Guage drop and here the sound air sucking through the carburetor. The 72 trans am was the rarest of the cars. They only produced a little over 1200 cars because of a strike at GM that year. My brother's car was the same color as this one.

That is one of the coolest cars ever made. Beautiful sexy lines. Super easy to get 400 horse out of that motor and it's still run on regular. If you dare to do some head work and raise the compression you can get 500 horse. The only problem with that is the torque numbers go up and it already was a torque monster. 335 horse that came with is nothing but fun.
