This young presenter doesn’t know very much about Virgil Exner for those of us who are around in the 50s in the 60s and the 70s know quite a bit about the Blackhawk to all you young kids out there enjoy it

Exner was very influential in car design, and was primarily responsible for the novel Studebaker Starlight (credited to Raymond Loewy) and some very nice concept cars in the 1950s, such as the Chrysler d'Elegance whose design was subsequently stolen, more or less, for the VW Karmann Ghia in smaller format. In later years Exner penned some "revival"designs for Esquire magazine. A Mercer concept was built and he attempted to get a new Duesenberg into production c. 1966 but nothing came of these. Taste is subjective, of course, but these later cars, including the Stutz, were ugly, full of gimmicks like fake sidepipes, typical of the "neoclassics" trend of the 1970s. Considering that the running gear was Pontiac and the components all brought in except for the leather, trim and the body itself, it is hard to understand why these cars were so expensive. Elvis owned the prototype Stutz, which he had customized by George Barris, and then a 1971 production version, along with 1972 and 1973 models subsequently.

Converting the side pipes from decorative to functional…the owner of this car is the hero we need, not the hero we deserve.

Exner was actually an extremely successful designer at Chrysler. He and his team won the Industrial Designers Institute gold medal in 1957, and he started with Chrysler in 1948. the shortened cars that you present in your video were changed to that design while Exner was recovering from a heart attach, and he was completely against the design. Good video for a misunderstood car, but Exner's contribution to automotive history deserves more respect.

Great video but in the early part you really didn’t give Exner the credit he deserves, yes his 60s cars were awkward by the work he did for Chrysler in the 50s was unbelievable and they were producing some of the best looking and most modern and revolutionary cars of the decade!

There's a guy not far from me that owns one of the slightly later Blackhawks. He also modified the car to route the exhaust through the side pipes. I saw the car and owner in the garage as I was driving by and just stopped, wondering what that car was... he showed me around and talked with me for about 40 minutes about his Stutz. Very nice guy and very cool car!

You should research the career of Virgil Exner, Sr. He was a genius designer with exquisite taste. The production ‘62 Dodge and Plymouths were his design - but brought to market on too short wheelbases by mis-guided management.

Delicate cars to keep fresh looking. About 1998 in st pete there were 3 stutz outside a business. They were hideous weathered and rusted. Gold trim looked awful. Two of them were four doors and I bet have been crushed. My favorite one is sammy's seen on chico and the man

One of my faves too. Was actually a Hot Wheels car. I still have it. It’s the first run edition: silver with blue and yellow graphics. I liked the car despite “STUTZ” written all over the hood. A couple years later they issued an all black with pinstripes version that looks much handsomer.

Cool video. I first saw a Stutz when I was a little kid in the 1970s. It was on an episode of Chico and the Man. Years later as a teenager one of my buddies bought a beat-up 1971 Grand Prix SJ, and the SJ's overall shape seemed familiar to me.

These cars were then and are now, over rated. Why? Because it's under pinning's are Pontiac including the 455 cid v8 engine. For me Blackhawk is nothing more than "a custom" thousands have appeared in magazines for decades. Many are by far better looking with craftmanship at another level. The most disappointing aspect of this charade, the design was penned by Virgil Exner, the famous Forward Look of the Chrysler Corp. . Stunning concepts like 1955 Chrysler Falcon, a favourite of mine. The $27000 in 1971 put this car in the ultra luxury stable costing even more than a Rolls Royce. Though RR was far superior in every way. Pontiac through car culture history was iconic. The fact Pontiac is no longer with us. For me it leave a deep sadness. I still refuse to read about Pontiac and Oldsmobile exit. Sorry this all a bit of a ramble.

Cool video but Exner is treated more like a footnote. Thus this kinda comes across as someone talking about a topic they really don’t know enough about and more homework needed to be done 🤷🏽‍♂️ Maybe even find pics of at least some cars from the list of owners. Barry White’s was a 4 door if I’m not mistaken. Specs like horsepower and the engines story would have been great

That 1962 Dodge is quite possibly the ugliest car I've ever seen. Well, actually that honor might go to the Pontiac Aztek or the former USSR's Trabant.
