The Stutz Blackhawk is an American ultra-luxury car manufactured from 1971 through 1987. Other than the name it bears no resemblance to the original Blackhawk (1929-1930). The Stutz Motor Company was revived in August 1968 by New York banker James O'Donnell. He joined forces with retired Chrysler stylist Virgil Exner who designed the new Blackhawk. Exner's design included a spare tire that protruded through the trunklid, a massive 'kidney' grille, and freestanding headlamps. The new Blackhawk was prototyped by Ghia in Italy at a cost of over US$300,000. To offer exclusivity and still allow easy servicing in the U.S. a custom built Italian body was added to a General Motors platform and engine. The Blackhawk debuted in January 1970 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Prices ranged from US$22,500 to US$75,000. All early Blackhawks were coupes, but rare sedans were produced later. Convertible versions were called D'Italia and Bearcat. Stutz Blackhawks became the car of choice among elite entertainers of the day.[citation needed] By 1976 Stutz had sold 205 Blackhawks and about six a month were handbuilt in Italy and shipped to the U.S. By April 1980 350 Blackhawks had been sold and by the time production ended in 1987 approximately 500 to 600 cars had been manufactured.
With an extra heavy gauge steel body handmade at Carrozzeria Padane in Modena, Italy, and from 1972 at Carrozzeria Saturn in Cavallermaggiore, near Torino, Italy, and greater than 19 feet long, the production Blackhawk uses Pontiac Grand Prix running gear, Pontiac's 7.5 L (455 in³) V8 engine, and a GM TH400 three-speed automatic transmission. With its engine tuned to produce 425 hp (317 kW) and 420 ft·lbf (570 N·m), the 5000 lb (2300 kg) Blackhawk can accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 8.4 seconds with a 130 mph (210 km/h) top speed, delivering eight miles per gallon (30 L/100 km). Later Blackhawks use Pontiac's 403 and 350. Also Ford, Chevrolet and Cadillac engines were used. The handbuilt Blackhawk has 18 to 22 hand-rubbed lacquer paint coats that took six weeks to apply. Total production time for each vehicle was over 1500 man-hours. In 1980, the Blackhawk was redesigned for the Pontiac Bonneville chassis and 1985, the Oldsmobile Delta 88/Buick LeSabre Chassis.
The 1971 Blackhawk's factory price was US$22,500; adjusted for inflation approximately US$142,440 in 2020 dollars. In 1974 the factory price had increased to US$35,000 (appr. US$182,025 in 2020 dollars). A year later, in 1975, the factory price was US$41,500 (appr. US$197,775 in 2020 dollars). In 1976 a Blackhawk’s base price was US$47,500 (appr. US$214,035 in 2020 dollars). And in 1981 the coupe sold for US$84,500 (appr. US$238,345 in 2020 dollars). Mint condition early generations (1971-1975) estimated US$32,000 to US$35,000 in 2002.[6] After his death Wilson Pickett's well preserved 1974 Stutz Blackhawk was auctioned off in 2007 for US$50,600.

It's a Grand Prix Pontiac... Nothing elegant.

Beauty, of course, is in the eye of the beholder, but elegant is not the first word that comes to mind when gazing at this misshapen monstrosity. More like Homer Simpson redesigns an early 60s Pontiac coupe to make it more "elegant".

I owned a 1977 model previously owned by the actor Curd Jurgens I bought in 1984 for for $20,000 while stationed in Germany. I kept it until 1986 when I got orders returning me to the USA. it had all lambs wool carpeting in all flooring areas including the trunk. I sold it to a German for $26,000. He in turn sold to a Swiss man named Stutz. It is a dark blue with light blue leather piped in dark blue. It is featured in the Stutz Registry. The only modifications I made were dual exhaust and dual rear synchronized antennas. It was one of six at the time that had a refridgerated center console with a champaign decanter and matching crystal glasses. It very easily maintained and ran beautifully unlike the 1969 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit I owned previously. It certainly got more attention in Europe as we travelled.

If you were one of the few wealthy elite in the 70’s this was your car. Fitting that Sinatra is playing for this video as he actually owned one.

I have tons of material from the company going back to 1968. so I'll go on what info I have. Stutz Motor Car of America Inc was create din 1968 and produced hand-built cars between 1970 until the final twelve 1988-89 Bearcat II models were made (at a cost of $125,000 -$138,000) using special Diamond-comp bodies. The company actually lasted into the mid 1990s (though few cars if any were built) as part of armored vehicle maker O'Gara, Hess & Eisenhardt. It's true that Stutz vehicles were THE cars to own if you had the money and you wanted everyone to know it! However, Frank Sinatra owning a Stutz is a myth. Unlike his fellow "Rat-Packers" Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin (both owned numerous Stutz cars throughout their lives) Frank Sinatra never drove, purchased or owned a Stutz automobile in his life. I knew a lot of people who worked at Stutz Motor Car of America Inc (NYC) such as James O' Donnell, Rich Curotto, Warren Liu, and Verne Barry as well as Jules Meyers in Beverly Hills whose Pontiac dealership had the exclusive rights as THE one and only Stutz distributor in the USA at the time. I know for a FACT that Frank Sinatra never owned one. It is true that Frank Sinatra was originally the first person interested in purchasing the expensive first available production model Blackhawk, but he had problems allowing Jules Meyers display the car (the only one available at the time other than Stutz president James O'Donnell's prototype which already made it's worldwide debut at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC in January 1970) at a Los Angeles car show. This caused publicity problems for the company and dealership since another Blackhawk would not be available in time. Whatever the reason, Sinatra eventually lost interest in buying the car. Between August and September 1970, Elvis Presley did become interested and quickly purchased the first Blackhawk (sometimes dated as a 1971 model while O'Donnell's prototype was often listed as a 1970 model) from Meyers for around $22,500. Elvis would eventually own many other Stutz Blackhawks over the course of his life. He was also more accommodating in allowing Jules Meyers to publicly display his new Blackhawk before it was eventually delivered to his California residence. Sinatra was supposedly unhappy that he lost the chance to buy the car and as a result he never contacted the Stutz company or Meyer's dealership about any Stutz vehicle again.

Another fantastic video. It looks like the studs people really rated the GM parts bins, but regardless The car is almost like a work of art. Those huge headlights are astonishing
@CaptHollister
@CaptHollister 3 жыл бұрын
A work of art ? yes, perhaps Picasso deconstructs a car. Raiding the GM parts bin would suggest that Stutz designed and built a car to which they adapted GM parts, which isn't at all what happened here. They started with poor, unsuspecting Pontiacs and raided the gaudier section of their local glitter store to throw bling at these unsuspecting GM products who didn't deserve such mistreatment.

My father had a black, four door in the mid 80's as a collector in Houston. That car was the most attention grabbing but polarizing for sure. I don't think I appreciated it as a teen then but have grown a fondness for them with my memories of those times. Definitely has an unique if not controversial place in auto history!

First thing that I noticed that exposed it was a Pontiac underneath all that awfulness was the instrument panel. My first car was a 1976 Pontiac Grand Le Mans Safari wagon but it was the same . I wish it was still a mid-seventies Pontiac to be honest. What was Stutz in the Seventies anyway? Just some company that owned the rights to the name?
