My father worked for Onondaga County for 32 years. A Walters was the first plow he drove. 4WD all the time. No sander. V plow and double wings. He said it was a tough old machine. He ran that up through the 80’s. They then put him in a 6 wheel drive Mack. Double wings and two plows for the front. One V and one reversible. They would use the reversible plow most of the season until the banks were higher than the truck. They would then put the V on to buck back the banks. His last truck was in the late 90’s. That was a 10 wheel drive Autocar. He said that would put all the others to shame just due to the hp and weight. Had the same front blades as the Mack. I can still remember the truck numbers. Walters 35, Mack 68, Autocar was 192. I used to love riding around as a kid between my dad and the wingman. He has many stories about plowing roads with graders, with a 1 way or in these three trucks. Great stories.

My dad drove this 1971 Walters Snow Fighter for the Town of Kirkland Highway Department for 49 years. Friday January 8,2021 Jon Scott asked to park his truck out in front of the funeral home paying tribute to my dad, knowing how much this would mean to my family. I am sure this created some congestion and frustration in the village but man it sure meant the world to us. Countless 🎄Christmas mornings and other family gatherings were either missed or delayed while my dad worked tirelessly plowing snow. #bittersweet💔 #mydadsyoutubeisviral #morethan1millionviews #mydadstruckisbiggerthanyours #smalltownpride #resteasydad

Worked for Town of Root ,Montgomery Co in the the rarly 90's when the blizzard came through.All the regular dumptrucks took their turn getting stuck but an old timer named Bob and I truged on plowing and opening many roads with their 1980 orange walters.Seemed like you were on top of the world till the snow was as deep as the cab is high.

Where I grew up in upstate NY the town still has a an old Walter as part of the fleet I remember the Valentine's blizzard where the only way to plow out half the town was with that Walter snowed in for five days getting groceries with the snowmobiles and the cold dark snowy night finnaly hearing the old disel and seeing the flashing lights was almost mystical. Nothing plowed that Walter could.

I worked for the Passaic Co NJ Road Dept in the late 70's. I was just out of H.S and landed a County Job on the road crew. We had 2 of these old Walters and they both worked. They had huge 4 cyl engines in them and top speed was maybe 35mph. All torgue and power. I had the good fortune to go out on a run with our Crew Supervisor "The Rebel" to open up a road that had huge snow drifts and the state couldn't get the job done. What a ride that was. We hit that drift at 30 mph and went through it like a knife though butter! What a truck and what a experience! I will never forget it! Damn I miss them days!

This looked like Hilltop road in Sprakers New York where we had a farm.You could hear the Walter with the detroit coming up the hill.They usually stopped by my house and backed down then would come back up really winging the snow back.One pass with both wings down and the road was done.That was in the 80's and early 90's. Loved to hear it coming.

I grew up in Madison County in the 40s-early 50s and when those Walters with the V plow and 2 wings came thru, everyone got out of the way as nothing was going to stop them back in the day. People woud stand side of the rd cheering as they opened up the rd, especially after 5-6 days of being penned in.

50,s and 60,s in hull massachussetts had 2 of these. One diesel one gas. Gas was retired to beach cleanup..the diesel one carried on till the very end of the 70,s. It was the only functional plow in the middle of the blizzard of 78 storm. It never got stuck. All the other plows got stuck on sunset point trying to rescue each other. Its sole purpose during the blizzard was to keep the 6 hills of the town cleared in case of medical emergency. There was nothing else left capable of the job. After that it was retired

I had a ride with my friend, Ken, who operated a Walter with the V blade and twin "wings" on the roads in Hodgdon, Maine, just outside Houlton, Me. A local farmer, Glen Duff, had the contract to plow the roads there in the winter. It was almost unstoppable in the heavy snow and high drifts.

Bus driver went door to door to ask the village people to take in about a dozen kids left on the bus.........Sharon Hill,NY------Jct of NY 145 an US Rt 20 ,about 1945 or 1947 . Thanks to Herb Vrooman, our bus driver of bus #9, a Mack, and Avery DeLuca, Principal. It took 3 weeks to get our town road plowed out, pop took the milk with horses and bob sled to Argusville to a waiting milk truck.

Thanks for sharing this! Our county was Mackinac County in Michigans UP. In the 1960’s they used a big old plow we lovingly called the “Oshkosh”. It was a big V-plow that had a wing on the side to wing back the snowbanks when they got as tall as the top of the plow. We could hear that big diesel engine coming from 6 miles away. It was a beast.

Town of Root,Montgomery County,NY had one similar in the '50s/60s with the wings on both sides. I believe it would clear a 24' path. You'd always feel rescued after a big snow when you heard the straight exhaust pipe bark .

Wonderful video. My grandfather used to work for the Cazenovia Highway Dept in upstate NY, (near Syracuse) and they had 3 Walter, one double winged. It was great to see them in action. With the combo sander/one ways they use now, seeing this video is a treat. They do have one or two V's still in the fleet which are called on when the going gets tough, however. Thanks for this great video.

When I worked for a time on a county road crew, we spent the late Summer and Fall stocking sand mixed with calcium chloride and putting up snow fence. The snow fence was installed in known windy areas tens of feet from the roads so the snow was 'dropped' before it built up on the roads. Common to see double stacked snow fence! The oldest Walters we used then was a 1937 with wings and V blade much like this one. It had straight cut trans gears and one had to double clutch to syncro shift smoothly!

This is awesome. There is nothing like an old Walter. They are the best. I love seeing these beasts out in the snow. Steamshovelman and I own a 1970 FCBS which we are trying to get running and restore. Unfortunately, the Cummins 230 engine in it is very badly seized. I can't wait until it does run so I can take it out in the snow. However our wing was stolen and now we need a used Frink 14 foot right wing

Walters, Oshkosh and the old FWDs with vee plow and double wing are hard to beat for breaking out a road through deep snow. You can come through with a snow blower later to tidy up.

What a handsome piece of machinery. When I look at this plow I think of a knight in shining armor coming to vanquish the snow. I wish we had something like this in Albany county for our four lane roads and for the hill towns.
@DM-rp7ps
@DM-rp7ps 2 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly; Albany Co received some of, if not THE last Walters' to come off the assembly line before the the nearby factory closed. They've built some incredible 6x6's to replace them for plowing up on the West side, as have the Town's themselves. Good folks up there, most know to keep groceries on the shelf for when a storm is coming. They usually get an extra large serving of snow! There are still a few of these old beasts lurking in highway garages around our Capital Region area, along with Osh-Kosh's and a few FWD's. The latter are getting increasingly scarce. Repair parts are hard to come by, and very expensive when found used for these classics, which is an incentive to use them only for very extreme conditions. The famous Linn tractors were also made nearby in the Upstate Town of Morris. Most of NY is very different from the big city that people tend to judge us by. It's also nice for the driver's to have luxuries these trucks didn't offer - Re: heat in the cab, power steering, defrosters that work, quiet exhausts and the ability to drive over 35-40MPH on the way to the job. These folks sometimes live in their trucks 16 hour days and more during a storm, stopping only for fuel, reloading sand and a cup of bad coffee at the shop while we sleep warmly in our beds. Take time and thank them when you see them stopped at Stewart's, etc and treat them to blackwater and a bite. It's a tough job, and is always nice to feel appreciated. If you ever have an opportunity to take a ride in one, it's an eye opening experience for most, even on flat roads ... Some leave wondering how any mailboxes are left standing at all!

We used to get snow like that in Milwaukee, but Ashland Wisconsin is still king of snow, on the Lake Superior Snow Belt, just off hiway 2. We just get slush in Milwaukee now. Garbage trucks plow the little we get (ugly) but now, sadly, it's mostly slush. Damn. I remember 10 foot drifts in Milwaukee alleys when I was a kid in the 60s & 70s. Sad to think it's all gone. The sun worshippers are thrilled. I hate summer. Guess being born in November put me in Winter mode. Love these old Walter's and FWD's, they still use them up in Ashland, if you drive north of Ashland, you're up to your waist in Lake Superior. Beautiful little town, along with Cornucopia, Bayfield, Washburn, and Hurley. God's Country! Way up inna nort woodz, by hey, yah Der!
