Let me tell you something. It’s fun for about the first couple hours. After that, consider this, mechanical equipment breaks down. Hydraulic hoses spring leaks. And like the AC/DC song, its a long way to the shop, if you wanna plow snow!

The 6x6 Western Stars do just fine here in Nova Scotia, but these things are bad ass too! There are a couple old Oshkosh plows too and man those things are weapons!
@davidleighton57012 жыл бұрын
If the V-blade is set up right then when it gets into the snow the weight of yhe snow actually pushes down on the front tires giving it even more traction. The Oshkosh trucks are weapons too but the Walter Snofighters are true all wheel drive. Nothing else like them.

@tjwiersma44063 жыл бұрын
Actually, it’s called a shelf. You can’t push all the snow back so you push just the top back. Then you come back and put more snow up on the shelf and push that snow back. Then when it snows next time the shelf will hold the first drifting so the road doesn’t blow closed right away. It’s not for snowmobiles.

Curious, the Walter looks like it's been modified and well maintained. Compared to the stock Walter, has this one had engine and gear train replaced or is it all stock? I've admired these my whole life, but I'm not familiar about what set them apart from other trucks. Stature, Wheelbase, Width, gearing.....?
@ericl29693 жыл бұрын
The drive system was unique, and very advanced for the time period when it was invented. The the main drive system is high up within the frame or higher, including the differentials, and the wheels are supported on non-driving beam-type axles. Stub axles go into the hubs, which are almost as big as the wheels themselves, at an elevation that's nearly as high as the top of the rim. From there a spur gear drives in inside-toothed ring gear that's at the perimeter of the over-sized hub. This gives enormous gear reduction at the hub, making it possible to make the transmission and the ring-and-pinion sets of the differentials smaller than they'd otherwise need to be. Finally, there are three differentials, one each for the front and rear wheels, respectively, and one differentiating power between the front and rear. The front-rear differential is incorporated into the transmission based on a the looks of a diagram I once saw). The differential gears themselves are based on the principle of a worm gear being able to spin a helical gear, but a helical gear being unable to spin a worm gear. These worm-gear/helical-gear sets (three per differential) are set up such that going around corners works the same as any normal differential, but a slipping wheel is NOT able to induce differential action. Thus, it is not ever possible to spin one axle or one wheel due to uneven traction - all without the need for a locking mechanism or friction clutches (Cheers, from a guy who wishes there had been Walter trucks to see, out here in the Midwest).

Do they still make Walter Snowplow Trucks ???
@435now4 жыл бұрын
No they went out of business in 1998, just after they rebuilt this one. They were very good at what they did but weren't as much use during the rest of the year because they often didn't have a dump bed and were geared very very low. Top speed wasn't much more than 45 but from what I've heard 30-35 is about all you really wanted to do. You could get two or three tandem dump trucks or a grader for the cost of one Walter. They're still out there in some smaller townships and villages where drifting is enough of a common problem, usually later models like this one. But for the most part graders, Oshkosh's and all wheel drive 10 wheelers have replaced them for doing this kind of thing.
