1971 World Championship Figure 8 Feature, Islip Speedway

Scary but I remember watching this in 1971! I remember impatiently waiting for Wide World Of Sports to come on each week. At the time I lived in Duluth MN. Today I live not far from the Speedrome Sonny Thompson's home track and I have been there many times and twice for the World 3 Hour Figure 8. Got to photograph it for the track too. Stood where Sonny Thompsons plaque is many nights. At one time I was also crew chief for a race team and got three drivers their first wins. I sure do miss the older cars though, they were beasts and the drivers were just as tough.

I watched Dan Daughtry race Late Models at Sunshine Speedway through the 70's, he won many features, he was a really good driver and tough as nails.. He made an appearance at Daytona in the late 70's too. Some of the best memories I have are my dad taken my brother and I to Sunshine Speedway every Saturday Night to watch the races, couldn't wait to get there. Oh the Good Old Days!!

That's great. I loved to go to Palm Beach Fairgrounds Speedway on Friday nights. There were so many top drivers who ran there every week.....Crowe, Balough, Conners, Anderson,Tissot, Brack....the list is long the 70's were great for Stockcar racing. Glad we both got to see the short track greats of the day.
