Well Bro thanks, I just picked up a 1967 Johnson with electric start, it came with everything but most of the wires were cut off and your video explains it in great detail. Appreciated much, it would be nice if other videos would make it as clear as you have. Also great camera work, unlike other that just get the camera dancing all over the place. Again thanks.

Health & Safety: You shouldn't have the kill switch mounted on the motor. The whole point is if you go overboard the engine is immediately stopped by the lanyard clipped to your body preventing the boat from speeding away and crashing into you, somebody else or property.
@rjguess Жыл бұрын
I understand that. I’ve never seen a kill switch with a lanyard on an outboard with hand tiller steering on these old motors. That’s how my friend wanted it. So that’s how I hook it up. I do appreciate your concern for safety! It is very important.

I was wondering if there were any interlocks to this conversion to keep the starter from engaging when the motor was in gear. There is a mechanical interlock that won't let you pull the rope starter when in gear. My question is when retrofitted, if the motor is in gear and you tried to start the motor with the electric start wouldn't it damage the starter and or fly wheel or mechanical interlock of the motor? I am referring to a 1987 20 hp evinrude pull start with tiller steering. Hope you can help, thank you.
@rjguess7 жыл бұрын
The motor that I worked on in this video has both options to pull start or push start. I have never started an outboard while in gear. I would imagine that it would put strain on parts of the motor such as the starter and possibly the flywheel. I'm not sure if I am answering your question right but I bet it would damage it because they are not meant to start while in gear.

@rjguess7 жыл бұрын
Mark Pastore I bought that heavy gauge wire from the auto store. I told them what I was doing and that I needed a heavy gauge wire that could handle an outboard motor. I told them the cable was going to run from the battery and to the motor. I don’t remember the gauge of the wire but it was thick. The red one is black underneath the red electrical tape. The auto store only hade black. I bought about 8 feet and cut it in half. The battery was only setting 2 feet from the motor.

Greetings I am converting my 25 hp evinrude outboard just like your video. I have everything done but I can get power the motor to start. I checked everything but I needed to ask about the wiring of the selinoid. There is a black wire on the top small post that appears to go to a relay of some type. Your video didn’t mention that. Would that connection cause me issues. Or should I put a ground on the selinoid to he motor. Your video is great but I’m a novice at this. I had the starter looked at and serviced, new battery, new wires and switches and a new Selinoid. I’m sure I am missing something small lol. Many thanksgivings

@markpastore41766 жыл бұрын
My apologies at the 2 minute mark you show the selinoid and there is a red wire off the left small post. On my boat it looks as if it goes to a relay then to the right there is a red wire not on a post but appears attached to the engine as a ground. Many thanks

Mark Pastore I know longer have this motor. It was a friends. I see the wire you are talking about. If everything is hooked up as the motor in my video shows, I am not understanding why you are not getting power to your motor. No need to apologize my friend. Was just wanting to make sure I was looking at the right wire. If I could see your motor that would be better! I haven’t worked on boat motors since this video was made. It’s been a few years. So let me ask this. When you push the button to start your motor does anything happen at all? Any clicking, is your choke electric or manual? Also a great place to go to get a diagram of your motor is here www.marineengine.com You can find pretty much any part or more help in the forums if I am not able to help you out.

I really hope you get it. When you do let me know please. Thanks again.

Would this be possible to add this on an 1976 Evinrude 9.9 hp and a 1980 Johnson 35 hp? Both have pull starts and if I'm understanding correctly, all I need besides the wire would be the starter button, kill switch (can I use the existing "stop" button that both have?) and obviously a battery. Do these pull starts have a starter in them already along with the solenoid? New to outboard ownership, thanks and am unable to look in either engine currently.
@slowfaller8 жыл бұрын
both will be used as tillers..forgot to mention
@rjguess8 жыл бұрын
It should be possible to do this on both outboards you mentioned. You should be able to use the existing "stop" button as a kill switch instead of what I did here. I set one up because I removed the ignition and the ignition was the kill switch. This motor already had the starter in it because it was originally key start. Remove your cowl and see if you may possibly have one. Most likely you will have to buy one. I highly suggest visiting www.iboats.com/ and www.marineengine.com/. These websites have forums with very smart people about any subject on outboards. Learned all my mechanic outboard skills from these pages. Also you can get almost any part from either site plus detailed diagrams of your motor on marine engines site. Hope you get what you need!

I am doing this same conversion right now to my '69 25hp Johnson. It was not electric start from the factory but I have a '63 18hp parts motor that is. So, I am taking the bracket and motor from one and adding them to the other. My question is: there is very little room to fit the battery cables under the kill switch, how did you do it? You mention you drilled a hole but I would love to see a photo of that. Once the cables are inside the cowl they are very very close to the terminals of the kill switch. Has this ever been a problem with the cables wearing through the insulation and grounding on the terminals or the metal body of the motor? Loved your video. You did a great job on the motor and the video.
@rjguess7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliments on the video! Much appreciated. Sorry I cannot provide a photo because this was a project for a friend and he no longer lives near. But I will tell you that to this day he has no problem with the motor. I bought a rubber grommet and placed it in the hole that I drilled out so the battery cables would not rub the metal of the cowl. I hope this info helps you out.

@rjguess4 жыл бұрын
Yes I have. You need to remove your flywheel. There are several things that could cause this. One is if your motor has what they call "points" one of them might be out of adjustment or bad and needs to be replace or adjusted. The other is if it has "ignition coils" the one that is not getting spark is bad. It needs to be replaced. I am pretty sure your motors will have ignition coils. You could try removing your flywheel to get to the ignition coils. See if they might be rubbing the flywheel or are dirty. You could clean them off and place them back in. It might help but most likely you will need to replace the one with no spark.
