I get 23 mph out of my 1978 25 HP Johnson, almost identical to yours but on a 14ft V hull aluminum. So much fun. Mine idles a little rough so I might take a look at it. Yours is much smoother than mine at idle.

Right above the fuel pump its 2 screws with a metal plate mounted and right above that its a hose running from the little vacuum hole. Is it running to the little housing right under the carb (not the carb hose) i know that runs to the fuel pump

Thanks for all the info you provide in your videos. I have the same motor in this video but mine is a 1971. There is a black fuel line that goes from the crank case (behind and to the left of the carb) to an inlet abouve the feul pump. What is the line called and what purpose does it serve? I have the manuel for the engine but I can't find anwhere that mentions this line. Any info you could provide would be much appreciated and thanks again for the content you provide.

Hi I have and Johnson FD 16 and it is a real pain just start and idles really bad always a real hard kick back and then stop and hard to get running again after that you think you could be the read plates causing the problem or I guess the carburetor cleaning carburetors been clean to look swell inside just really have a trouble trying to get it to idle or even starting. I tried to put the little electronic ignitions in there but did absolutely the same thing as the points kicks back real hard and doesn't idle correctly
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. It's hard to say about the reeds, but it sounds like an ignition/timing problem. Kick back or backfire could be it's firing on the wrong cylinder, try swapping the plug wires and see if that does anything. Test the spark on both cylinders, use a drill to turn the flywheel and watch the spark for constant or sporadic spark. Try running it on one cylinder at at time, that will help to narrow things down. A clogged exhaust will also give it a kickback. What's the compression on it.

Have a Johnson 25 as well but a 97 model, wouldn’t start on the water after running great all day. Sounds like a sucking sound coming out of the carb and a lot of black grease deposits on the bottom of the housing. Any trouble shooting advice for me, rather not spend an arm and a leg
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 4 жыл бұрын
Hey. First thing I would do is check for spark. Black oily stuff is unburned fuel mixing with carbon deposits and dripping down. It can also happen if your trolling alot and not running the motor at high rpms every once in a while to blow it out. If you were trolling you could have fouled out the plugs too. A new set of plugs is a lot cheaper than a power pack or stator. If everything just went dead then thats what you'll be looking at. Check for spark, get new plugs and check all of your ground wires, make sure they are tight and making good contact. Hopefully it will be something easy like that. There are ways of testing powerpacks and stators. You can probably find videos on youtube. You can find a free service manual at boatinfo.no. Check out the troubleshooting sections. Ebay is good for new and used parts, but with used ignition parts you never know how long it will last. CDI electronics has pretty good prices. Curious to know what you find out. Thanks for watching and commenting.

greetings. I have a question. I just received my grandpa's 1971 Johnson 25 hp. I took the cover off the motor and found an extra fuel line that's not connected to anything. after looking the motor over there seems to be a small brass nipple behind the carb that leaks gas when the motor is running. and there is another smaller brass nipple on the other side of the fuel filter that blows air out when the motor is running. should that gas line I found be attached to both those brass nipples? I can not find a diagram of this anywhere. and the manual doesn't mention it either. @ 11:16 in your video it looks like you have the a fuel line attached to the same nipples I'm referring to. ( behind carb and above fuel filter) Just wanted another opinion before I go any further. sorry for such a long message. any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Hey. Check the shift linkage where it connects the upper and lower rods. It's behind that small access panel with the 2 screws in it on the side of the exhaust housing. Sometimes the brass connector gets worn and slips on the rod. If its not that then its probably the clutch dowg gear. Some guys will pull the gearcase apart and just turn the gear around, but then you won't have reverse. Hopefully the entire gearcase isn't shot. Hey thanks for tuning in. Maybe it's getting too much fuel to the cylinders and flooding the plugs out which could mean the float needle not seating or float needs adjusted. Or the slow speed idle circuit in the carb is clogged and it's pulling a lot of fuel straight from the high speed circuit in the bowl. Only other thing I can think of would be the timing is off but it should at least fire/pop/spit/sneeze. You could drain the carb, pull the plugs out and clean them, shoot a little fuel in each cylinder, bump the starter just to get the fuel mixed in the cylinders, quickly put the plugs back in and crank it. It should fire, but you have to do it fast! It may be better just to do it on the top cylinder, it's faster just doing one. Curious to know what you find out. Thanks again !

Ok, I have rebuilt the carb it’s got new needle and seat gaskets etc. the float is set parallel with the carb body as was described, I cleaned all the passages including using the “ puddle method” you described in a video for the low end jets they drain very rapidly as was demonstrated. I tried placing a little fuel in the top cylinder as you described and it barely popped. It seems as if the timing is off but as far as I can see with gear selector set to neutral the armature plate plate set against the stop. The crank is rotated till the point is against the SET position and then points gap is set to .020. Other than that timing appears non adjustable. But it feels like timing is too far advanced but shy of adjusting point closer how would you retard the timing? Thanks so much for your help.
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Жыл бұрын
@@nathanielhite3738 Ok so the points are set, now you have to set the synchronization or "link & sync". This is critical. The cam follower or "roller" needs to start opening the carb butterfly just as it hits between the two marks on the throttle cam as you throttle up the handle. It should be in neutral, rotate the prop by hand to be sure it's not in gear. You should be able to go all the way to full throttle when in neutral. Ok so slowly turn the throttle handle, the throttle cam on the plate should make contact with the roller at the first mark, as the roller, rolls between the two marks the butterfly should start to open as it passes the first mark. Adjust the linkage as needed. It's also best to adjust the idle stop/adjustment screw so the roller sits just before the first mark on the cam. Usually these old motors don't have the nylon idle stop/adjustment screw anymore or they're broken or all froze up. You'll want to replace/fix that if need be. Number 84 on the schematic, I usually just replace them with a nut/bolt. Without it the plate will want to float back down an kill the motor. www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1976&hp=25&model=25652E&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=EXHAUST+HOUSING. Keep your slow speed needle valve at 1 & 1/2 turns out from seated, that will get you started and you can dial it in later. At this point, connect the fuel line and pump it up, pull the choke closed, set the throttle to start position and fire it up! Be ready to push the choke handle in as soon as it pops, these things flood fast. At Start position it will rev high so be ready to bring the throttle back down too. LMK how it goes!

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. If there's no ID plate on the transom mount then check the powerhead for the small silver round plug, it's about the size of a quarter. It should have a model number and serial number on it. Sometimes it will only have the serial number and it is useless. If the plug is missing or doesn't have the model number on it the only thing you can do is search pictures and try to match the hood decals, hopefully its the original hood. Also depending on the outboard, paint color can help identify it. Post a video of it on your channel and I'll take a look. LMK. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

Hey. Are you just Goofing on Me. Hahaha. Its like starting a Lawnmower! Did the Seller Start and Run it for You? Do You have a Fuel Tank and Fuel line for it? Dont Forget to Mix Your Gas and Oil 50:1 or You'll BURN it Up! If you go to my channel and scroll down to the ''From the Archives'' Playlist, You can see how to start it in most of those old videos, its easy if the motor is tuned up and in running condition. 1. Pump the Primer Bulb on the Fuel line until it is Firm, at this point you carb is full and the float closes the needle and wont let anymore fuel in the carb bowl. 2. Make Sure Your in Neutral and Not in Forward or Reverse. 3. Turn Your Tiller Throttle Handle Counterclockwise to the Start Position, this Will Put the Motor in a Fast Idle Position. 4. Pull the Choke Lever Out. 5. Pull the Rope Stater or Push the Electric Start Button until the Motor Starts. 6. Push the Choke Lever back in and Return the Throttle Handle Clockwise back to Idle Position. Sometime You have to push the Choke Lever in Very Fast as Soon as the Motor Starts or it will ''Choke Out'' and Stall. Sometimes You Can Ease the Choke Back in Slowly until the Motor Smooths Out. It's just something your gonna have to play with and get use to Once You Know Your Motor. They're all a little bit different. LMK. Thx, Stay tuned !

@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 5 жыл бұрын
Hey. Idle Adjustment Screw, not the one on the carb, but you may have to adjust it too. It's on the throttle control gear that turns the mag plate, It is made of plastic and usually get frozen up and wont turn, or are missing or have been replaced. Numbers 83, 84, 85 on the schematic. If its frozen up you can try and heat the metal around it to loosen it, to much heat and you'll melt it. If it's broken you'll have to drill it out, it has a stainless steel wire core, use a small bit and work it out, try not to mess up the threads so you can put a nut and bolt back in there. Also check your roller setting on the throttle cam, is the carb butterfly just starting to open when the roller is between the two marks on the cam. This is also the motors timing so be careful ! Hope this helps. thanks. Stay tuned ! www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1972&hp=25&model=25252R&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Exhaust+Housing

@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Hard to say without watching it run and even then it could be half a dozen different things that would cause that. Carb clogged, air leak, reed valves, float setting, timing, too rich, too lean, compression. At this point it becomes a process of elimination. But don't be fooled. There is also a point when throttling up that is very normal for it to studder. Thats when its transitioning from low/mid range speed to high speed. The carb opens up and sucks in more fuel from the high speed jet and it takes a couple of seconds for it to catch up, then starts to haul azz. It can been tweaked a little to smooth it out but not much, it's a 2 stroke! People don't usually drive them at that awkward speed anyway. So it never hurts to go through it and double check things. Make sure that carb slow speed circuit it surgically clean, those tiny holes, inside the top of the carb throat where the slow speed needle meters the fuel, they need to be poked with a tiny wire, carb spray is not enough, some people use guitar string or a bread tie. If just one hole is clogged it will screw things up. This seems to get overlooked a lot when cleaning carbs. Double check the points, they're also prone to vibrating and loosening up and the gap changes. One cylinder could be firing later then it should. You can also try and run it on one cylinder at a time, like its 2 separate motors. This will help narrow things down if one cylinder is missing. Take your time, be patient and never assume anything with these things. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

After backing the slow speed valve out 1and a half turns. How should I reattach the linkage to it.
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 4 жыл бұрын
Hey. Dont attach any thing until you find the "sweet spot" on the needle. Start the motor and let it warm up. After its warmed up, very slowly turn the needle in clockwise in 1/8th increments allowing the motor to adjust with each turn. You'll hear the RPM's start to rise. Keep going until you reach the highest RPM's just before the motor starts to cough and cut out. You'll probably have to do it a few times until you get use to where it starts to cough, we'll call it the "high" spot. Now do the same thing except counter clockwise and the RPM's start to drop, and just before the motor cuts out is the "low" side. So in the middle of the high and low sides should be your sweet spot on the needle +/- a bit. Then pull the linkage knob off the needle, attach the linkage and press the knob back on at 3:00. This should give you full range of adjustments for lean/rich on the carb using the adjusting knob. I usually end up doing it 2-3 times so I know exactly where the carb is set. Thanks for watching & Stay tuned !

Hey. Theres really is no adjustment. It needs to be very clean and lightly greased . Your brass gears may be misaligned or the teeth are broken. The handle could be worn out inside where it connects to the shaft. The Magneto plate could be worn and sticking. The throttle gears may be misaligned, loose, worn. The only thing you can do is check all moving parts from the handle back to the Mag plate and replace anything worn or broken. www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1974&hp=25&model=25RL74M&manufacturer=Johnson&section=Exhaust+Housing Thx, LMK Stay tuned !

I've got several videos of torn down gear cases but best thing to do is. There are three screws on the gear case two big ones with flat head screwdriver slots and one with Phillips head screwdriver slot do not touch the one with the Phillips head because you will disconnect the mechanism inside the gear case. Open the top flat head screw and take it out this is the Overflow for the oil. Then get a pan or something and open the bottom flat head screw and see what comes out. If it's nice fresh oil or it could be old crappy oil then you're in pretty good shape if it's rusty water you're screwed. Probably going to need another gear case. Also there is a website it is called leeroy's ramblings. Check it out. Plenty of good information there. It doesn't matter that it's a 25 horse they're all about the same configurations. Just look at the 15 horse sections exactly the same thing as a 25 just a little smaller. Hope that makes sense anyway let me know what happens. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay tuned!

@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 3 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. No I don't know anyone in Oregon. Are you getting fuel to the plugs? Pull the plugs out and check after you try to start it, are they wet or dry. If dry, fuel is not getting there, then you need to find out why. Carb clogged? Air leak? If wet then the fuel is getting to the plugs. But how much? To much will flood and foul out the plugs. Carb float and needle? Weak spark? Choke not opening? After you eliminate the fuel system of any possible causes move on to ignition. Weak spark, failing ignition parts? Good strong spark but no fire. Timing is off. Flywheel & flywheel key. Loose, bent or sheared key? So this is just a few things to look at. What may seem like a fuel issue could be ignition and vice versa. It's a process of elimination. It's best to have manual. Try ebay for a good used omc manual. Curious to know what you find out. I usually leave it where the screw/bolt is the easiest to take out of the connector. Sometimes the rod dosent want to slide back in easily and line up for the screw/bolt. So you'll have to shift it back and forth until its lined up, thats when a pair of needle nose pliers comes in handy! But there are those times when everything goes smooth and comes together nicely. Hi there, your videos have been very helpful, however I have been battling an issue I can not seem to resolve. Exact same motor, out of the water it looks and sounds like it runs great in gear, I take it out to the water, it started out great then I lost most power and bogged down really bad, I’ve checked just about everything except under the flywheel. My bottom spark plug is getting super black very quick and wet with gas I believe. Could this be a bad coil under the flywheel?
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 4 жыл бұрын
Hey. Sounds like it's sucking to much gas and fouling/drowning out the plug, But it is possible the coil is breaking down after it warms up. Thats the problem with these things and trying to diagnose them. What may seem like a fuel issue can be an ignition problem and vice versa. So then it becomes a process of elimination. Also bogging down is not characteristic to a coil breaking down in my experience. Coil failure is usually no spark or intermittent spark causing the motor to miss and run ruff on one cylinder while the other cylinder is running fine. You can pull the plug wire off the bottom cylinder and see how it runs on just the top cylinder when the problem starts to happen. If it still boggs down then you know its not that coil. Also get a spark tester or better yet a timing light is best, you can see them in daylight, they are cheap on ebay, and test it while its running bad, then you'll know for sure whats going on. Make sure all your ground wires are making good contact and tight. So if it turns out the spark is bad you'll have to go under the flywheel, you could just have a bad condenser and burnt points. Maybe time for a good tune up! Once you've eliminated the ignition system and theres still an issue then move on to the fuel system. Sounds like fuel pump is good, I would go after that carb. Float could be sticking and needle not seating flooding out the motor. Float height/position is very important. There are two positions for the float, high and low. You can find the specs in the manual at boatinfo.no. When the motor is pulling to much fuel in, the bottom cylinder is going to get most of it. You might want to start with the carb, its easier. If the carb/parts check out okay you may have a reed valve issue. So like I said, its a process of elimination, and never assume anything with these things, just because it "looks okay" dosent mean a thing. Curious to know what you find out. Thanks for watching ! Stay tuned !

THIS OLD OUTBOARD thank you so much, I’ve taken the carb out and cleaned it but didn’t really give much thought to the float being an issue, it was moving freely but I’ll give it another look as I have done more research since then and have a better understanding of what it does. I currently have coming in the mail, brand new coils (2), condensers (2), head gasket, gasket for carb, and exhaust housing gasket. Don’t know that I needed all those but figured what the heck it couldn’t hurt. Well I needed the head gasket because I pulled that off last weekend to look at the pistons. Was told not to run without replacing. When I had the carb off I took the piece off behind that and looked at the reed valves and they were all beautiful. Reason I was thinking the coils is because I figured maybe that bottom plug wasn’t firing and that’s why it came out wet, but it could have been firing, then got flooded and stopped sparking. That float is sounding more like the issue now.. or some kind of fuel over flow, because I took it out a month ago and had no issues (which would mean I was getting spark to both plugs) following weekend I took it out, it ran great for about 20 minutes then just dropped speed and started bogging out of nowhere and never picked back up. Anchored up and checked my brand new plugs and the bottom one was as black as could be and wet. So fuel overflow is sounding pretty promising. Sucks I just bought all that stuff but hey they been on there since 1972 so won’t hurt to replace anyway.

THIS OLD OUTBOARD hey just wanted to let you know, after replacing the 2 coils and condensers, my problem has been solved. Don’t necessarily think I needed the coils, found that the one running to the bottom plug was barley making contact inside the little rubber boot where the coil meets the Ignition wire, snipped back a little of the rubber casing to expose fresh metal wire, shoved it in and got good contact. Running great now 🤙🏼 thanks for your help

I have one of these units that's surging at high rpm. Boat will get on plane everything sounds good then it starts surging to a bog. It starts sounding out of time. Or missing any suggestions? Any way I can share a video with you? Thanks!
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 4 жыл бұрын
Hey. I watched your video. Hard to tell whats going on in one minute. I dont see any water coming from the peehole, could be overheating. Have you tried pumping the primer bulb as it starts to bog? Bad fuel pump or air leak in hose. Have you seen anything leaking anywhere around the powerhead or underneath? Could have an air leak somewhere. Give it a good inspection. Whens the last time you tuned it up? Your just going to have to go through and eliminate one system at a time. I would start with the cooling system, make sure its pumping water real good. Probably wouldn't hurt to check compression too. Then the fuel system. From the tank back. It could be something as simple as the vent in the tank cap is stuck or closed restricting fuel supply. Bad primer bulb, air leak, carb jets clogging up, fuel pump. Never assume anything with these things, just because it looks good or clean dosent mean it is. What may seem like a fuel issue could be an ignition problem and vice versa. As components start to warm/heat up they start breaking down. A coil will test out good when its cold but will break down as it heats up. Take your time, its probably something simple. Curious to know what you find out. Thanks for watching !

@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 5 жыл бұрын
Hey and Thanks. Assuming your selling it... It depends. Its the ''art of the sell'' ! In my opinion a good outboard like these should bring an easy 500+, especially in good condition, good compression, etc. But what drives the price up is pictures/video of all the work you did on it. Buyers love to see all the work done and time spent on the motor they are interested in. Anybody can just say they cleaned the carb or changed a seal but the proof is in the pics ! Back when I was flipping these things on a regular basis, They would sell fast and I was asking 700+ for them and getting it, but that was 6-7 years ago now. These 70's 25's are few and far between around here these days. Rarely do they pop up, and they dont fly off the shelves like they use. But there is one that was posted on craigslist a week or so ago and he's asking $600. Now, If your buying one thats a different story, be careful, Be Sure to check the compression and the oil in the gear case. Anyone selling an outboard will expect that. Dont be afraid to low ball him, its just part of the process! Hahaha Thanks again. Stay tuned !

First off, thank you for your videos, I've learned so much about my old outboard. I need some help; I have 1969 25hp evinrude, I was doing some carb adjustment and noticed while I was running it with the hood off there was water dripping from the bottom of the head. It soon filled up enough to drain out of the 2 small holes. After inspection the core plug is missing on the bottom of the head. I took the thermostat off and could shine a light straight through the hollow part from the top through the bottom. I'm sure this isn't great and I plan to replace the plug. But any idea what could have caused this? Thank you!

Hey. Thanks! Wow. Never heard that before. I did a search but nothing about outboards it was all inboards and freeze plugs popping out from the water freezing in the block. I guess that can happen on an outboard too. If it didn't freeze it could be just old age, a little corrosion, and some vibration over time it worked its way out. Might need a little JB weld on it when you put it back in. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

Here's a Q I've had for a few years: For a number of years, Evinrude and Johnson built identical 18 HP motors. Somewhere along the line, the Johnson became a 20, though I've never seen an Evinrude 20 of that time period. Both DID make the souped up 22 cubic inch 25; Evinrude called it a Sportster.
