I was a HUGE Miami Dolphins fan back then, a rabid NFL fan. The Dolphins had the BEST helmet logo - today's Dolphin's logo is junk. Anyway, I remember watching this game and thought the Browns were going to beat my beloved Dolphins. Back then I was young and naïve so I would be miserable whenever they lost. I have learned over the years it doesn't really matter. That being said, the NFL was way more fun to watch back then, unlike today's NFL. The rivalries were real (before players could decide to switch to another team so easily). The best rivalry game I loved to watch was the Raiders vs Chiefs. Those days are way over and now it's all about the money and the gamblers.

The Raiders v Chiefs was a helluva rivalry, they actually fought more than they played, the Browns v Steelers got to be a pretty good rivalry, Jets v Dolphins, Jets v Raiders, Cowboys v Redskins etc,... rivalry games well worth watching everytime

I watched that game...I genrally recall the Browns missing something like a 7 yard FG attempt on 4th and goal at the one...they still had the wider hash marks then, (which I miss) and the kick was from the far left side and made the goal posts look maybe like only 5 feet wide to the kicker.

I was at this game and it was scary as well as ugly. Even though it was the first score of the game, I felt that blocked punt was the difference. The five picks by the No-Name Defense didn't hurt either. BTW, 24 playoff games in pro football history featured five INTs. Every game but one, a 10-3 win by the Oilers in 1961 AFL Championship, was a loss.

The Name "Griese" along with the name "Mercury" and the awesome aqua jerseys are the reasons why the Dolphins were my 1st favorite team as a child even though I was born and raised in Cleveland. I don't remember this game though. Oddly enough the first game i can ever remember was the Super Bowl later that year when Dolphins beat the Redskins. My mom was a church going woman so we had to leave for evening worship service and I only saw the early part of the game.

We'll never know, but it's hard to imagine these Dolphins going undefeated against a stronger schedule. They played two teams with winning records (KC and NYG 8-6) and 2 others (MIN, NYJ) that were .500. Their opponents' overall record was 51-86-3. Not at all saying they were not great, but I can't imagine an NFL team could have a weaker schedule than they did. Could not put away any of their playoff games, though they were really never in danger of losing to the Redskins. The '73 team lost 2 games, but their playoff games were all over in the first ten minutes. They were a well-oiled machine.

By the opinions of most of us who were around at the time, the 1973 Dolphins were even better than the 1972 team. But the '73 Dolphins lost twice -- against Oakland in Berkeley, and in a meaningless late season game at Baltimore. In addition to the Raiders, the '73 Dolphins also had to play the Cowboys and Steelers, all playoff teams, plus the Bills and Browns, who had winning records but missed the playoffs. By comparison, the '72 Dolphins played zero playoff teams and only two teams with winning records -- the Chiefs and Giants (both 8-6). The '73 team also was far more dominant in its postseason wins than the '72 team. So it's very fair to assume the '72 team would've had at least one loss if they'd played even a moderately difficult schedule. Compare all this to the 1985 Bears, who played 5 playoff teams, plus a 10-6 Washington team that missed the playoffs due to tiebreakers. The Bears lost at Miami but easily won the other 5 games by double-digit margins. They also had the most dominant playoff run in the Super Bowl era, shutting out the Giants and Rams and not allowing a postseason TD until after they'd already run up a 44-3 lead in Super Bowl XX.

Although the Eagles have always been my favorite team, for a while there (from the early seventies until around the Marino era) the Dolphins were right there with them as far as my rooting interest was concerned. And since the Eagles were terrible, the Dolphins were without question the team I was most concerned about come playoff time. What I remember most about watching this game was that during the fourth quarter, my mother made us all sit down to a family dinner in the dining room. She allowed us the luxury of having the TV on in the adjacent room, so I could kind of "hear" the Dolphins go-ahead drive.

Wow! As a student of pro football history (especially 1950s-1970s), where I've tended to focus on the Bears, Packers, Vikings, and Falcons, I now have to add the Browns as one of my very favorite teams, from a history perspective! I was surprised, after them being in the NFL Championship games of 1964, 1965, 1968, and 1969, to see today, on KZbin, that they played the Colts again, in an AFC Divisional Playoff in 1971, and then they almost defeated the undefeated 1972 Dolphins, in a 1972 AFC Divisional Playoff. I've always especially admired Leroy Kelly, Gary Collins, and Paul Warfield, and now I realize Bo Scott was right up there as a great contributor to Browns offenses.

I love how the commentator said the Phipps/Warfield trade worked out for both teams. Haha...not really. The Dolphins received a Hall of Fame receiver in the prime of his career, and the Browns received a QB that couldn't stay sober. The only good thing that ever came from Mike Phipps is that later he was traded to the Bears for a 1st round draft choice, which the Browns used to select Hall of Fame TE Ozzie Newsome.

This 1972 Defense was never on the field very long , you know why , 26 interceptions and 29 fumbles recovered, mental mistakes -64 for 714 yards , they led the league in points scored , points against , Scoring Offense and Scoring Defense , 1st - 1st - 1st - 1st , 17 - 0 , Perfection , The only TEAM ever to do so in NFL history . 1973 Team Ranked - 5th points for - 9th scoring Off - 1st points against - 3rd scoring Def , 52 penalties for 416 yards , created turnovers , 21 interceptions , 13 fumbles recovered , the 1973 team statistically WAS NOT BETTER except in Penalties .

Paul Warfield was drafted in 64' or 65' as a halfback but also was a fine receiver in college, whatever the season the Browns won the NFL championship and Jimmy Brown's last season . I'm not certain , but i think it was the beginning of NFL taking a running back out of the full four man backfield on a full time basis (using warfield as a flanker wide receiver ) and using him as a receiver , the flanker position . now i guess they call them just the other wide receiver , but he must line up behind the lineman . the other wide receiver is a true lineman so he lines just behind the ball with the lineman , of course usually farther out towards the sidelines .

I have no doubt that Don Shula decided he wanted to move to Miami and coach there after his heavily favored Baltimore Colts lost Super Bowl III there to the Jets in 1969, who were oddly coached by Weeb Ewbank, who was the Colts coach in 1958 in the famous NFL title overtime game win against the NY Giants, when Johnny Unitas was the QB...you first knew the Colts were in serious trouble against the Jets, when Earl Morrall threw a costly interception to Jets safety Johnny Sample in the end zone just before the half on a flea-flicker play that worked so well for them during the season. Morrall didn't see a wide-open Johnny Orr waving his hands on the other side of the end zone. Morrall was finally benched in the 4th quarter, scoreless, and Unitas led the Colts to a too-late TD, their only score in a 16-7 loss. Oddly, in Super Bowl V in Miami, Unitas came off the bench again, this time in the 2nd quarter, when Morrall got injured, to lead the Colts over the Dallas Cowboys, 16-13, the only Super Bowl when the losing team had the MVP, Dallas MLB Chuck Howley, who threw his helmet half the length of the field, when the game ended on Colts rookie PK Jim OBrien's FG as time expired.

This was a butt ugly win for Miami, they were sloppy as hell that day. Phipps had a great game, but you can't throw 5 picks and expect to beat the best team in the league. This game showed that even the vaunted No Name Defense could look like crap on any given Sunday. The thing many fans may not know, is that the perfect season was mostly quarterbacked by Old Bones, the nickname players had for backup QB, Earl Morrall. Bob Griese went down in week 5 and Morrall took them 9-0 to finish out the 14-0 regular season. When the playoffs started, Griese was back, just in time.

I dont know why, but after watching this video, it doesn't seem like to me that the game is really as close as the final score, (won by the Dolphins against the Browns, 20-14), especially with the Browns QB throwing 5 INTs in this game. Dont get me wrong, I believe Browns did put up a great fight in this game, but I still believe the Dolphins had won this game more handily & easily than the final score!!

The game would’ve been in Oakland. The NFL used a weird rotation schedule for home field advantage in the championship game at that time. Since the championship was in Miami the year before, there was no chance of it being in Miami for a second year in a row, according to the rules.
