I recognized the BBS wheels right away. And actually answered that guy's question, before the owner did! I'm 57 years old. I've had a passion for several different cars over the years? However I'm never going to forget my first love! '72 Pantera. My dream of owning one never did come true, but I'm not dead yet! Cheers... 🙂
@bjjthaiboxing Жыл бұрын
Wow, I just had the strange flashback when I was showing me pictures of a Pantera to my father tell him that's what I want that's what I want... with one exception? I wanted to have a TV in the dash on the passenger side? My dad said that will never be legal? So, I changed it to installing the telephone then? I was still using rotary dial at the time. And again, he said same problem, never be legal. Anything that distracts the driver from the road, will never be legalized for automobile use. Plus driving with your car hooked to a phone line and/or coaxial cable, really limits the distance you can drive? It was late seventies after all? However I did say "mount them on the passenger side!" Those were ideas I had to entertain the passenger? I would not have risked crashing my dream Pantera! It's crazy how those ideas came to be a reality? I wish I had chance to point that out to my father before he died...

In another lifetime... I worked in a small shop selling Expensive Sports Cars and among them for a time, there was an '89 Testarossa and a '72 Pantera. I drove each of them often enough to get fairly familiar and noticed some of the less obvious comparisons. The Ferrari required extensive disassembly for a service to be performed, including raising the car on the lift, rolling a special dolly beneath it and bolting that to the rear under-carriage. After disconnecting the cooling hoses, and the wiring, and the "power unit" (engine/trans/rear-suspension) the car was raised high enough to roll the loaded dolly away. The required maintenance was completed and the process was run once more, in reverse order. In the Pantera, for relatively minor work at the front of the engine, a maintenance panel was accessible behind the seats. You removed the seats, pulled about a dozen bolts around the perimeter of the panel, and behind it the whole front of the engine was fairly accessible. Fan belts, water pump, and a few other bits were right there in front of you. In the Ferrari, anything that might possibly need attention was added to the list while that whole rear of the car was open. Everything at the front of the engine was sealed up until you pulled the motor... to the tune (in 1990) of about $25,000!

Wonderful car, great story, great video. Just FYI the entire exhaust system is a stock ANSA system from a European-spec Pantera GTS, which apparently a prior owner retrofitted (I did the same thing to my Pantera). The stock exhaust used rather inefficient non-equal-length headers, small-diameter pipes and ANSA mufflers. The Euro GTS came with equal-length headers, larger pipe (2.25 inches versus 1.75 inches) and the same ANSA mufflers. Although it’s an improvement it’s still nit as efficient as could be, probably due to the small diameter of the resonator tips which acts like a cork to partially obstruct exhaust flow. That system will knock a good 50hp off the engine when compared to a good Mustang exhaust (which unfortunately won’t fit in the Pantera due to packaging constraints). Panteras are really fast and fun to drive-the ultimate analog exotic car!

Pantera story: One day I stopped by Dave Heinz automotive, in Tampa Fla. and there behind the fence was an almost brand new Pantera. I could not believe what I saw when I looked inside. The car was filled with rotting, half eaten hamburgers, spilled milk shakes, a plethora of fast food wrappers, just all kinds of trash. I asked the guy, behind the parts counter, what the story was on the car. He replied that the car was in for it's third transmission replacement. Less than a year back, a man brought in his young son to by him his first car. The son wanted a new Ferrari. The dad refused to buy the Ferrari and instead bought the Pantera. To show his disdain for the father, the son refuses to use the clutch when changing gears and throws all his fast food trash in the back of the car. My first car was my parents 1966 Dodge Coronet 500, which I gave them $400 for. I was totally over joyed. I have been a car guy all my life and here are two stories of spoiled kids that I came in contact when selling vehicles. #1, Lady and her 16 year old daughter, pull up in a brand new (expensive) Mercedes Benz. The girl gets out, walks to the back of the 3 series BMW, points her finger at the trunk's BMW roundel and in a very whinny voice said', "OOH the emblem is bad. I don't like this car!" then turns around, gets back into the car and they drive off. #2. Very nice mother brings her son to buy his first vehicle. I've got a 1992 Ford F150. The mom looks the truck over, asks a lot of questions and then comments that this is exactly what she is looking for; safe, runs good and excellent price. She then turns to her son and says, "What do you think?" His reply, "I don't like it. I want a new truck!" My response to both of those spoiled brats would have been. "Great, when you come up with the money, just let me know and we'll go buy it. But until then, you'll ride the school bus!"
@howabouthetruth21574 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing the little "horror" stories that you witnessed. If I had bought that Pantera for MY son, and he purposely grenaded the transmission THE FIRST time ( not to mention the disgusting fast food garbage )........I would've gave him "a 2-2-10"........which means it would take 2 doctors & 2 mechanics to pull 10 inches of my BOOT out of his sorry ass. I would've also taken the car away from him & never bought him a car again.....EVER. But of course I didn't raise my boys to be such spoiled brats anyway, so........

A Porsche 911 was tailgating me for almost a mile, I had nonetheless tried to step on mine hoping to shake him off but the Porsche’s guy was a skillful driver and knowing his car was far more powerful, he kinda toying with me. Just when I was giving up the hi speed chase and flicked my indicator and moving over, I heard this super loud roar out of nowhere coming from behind. Seconds later it was this DeTomaso Pantera right behind the 911, doing exactly what the Porsche was doing to me, only in a more fiercely manner 😂😂😂 In short, the Pantera just ate the 911 alive as the Porsche skidded during a curve and must have banged his car sideways. Love the car, Panteras are awesome! I love he did/does everything himself. I would rather talk to an owner/builder than an owner that didn't build it himself.

I am green with envy.....all the hot stuff you get to ride/drive.....when I grow up I wanna be like you....I'm only 73. Ford should have kept on making these....maybe bringing the manufacturing to the U.S. By not doing so I believe that they really gave the green light to the Corvette. Don't get me wrong....I love 'Vettes....but I could love Panteras, too. Hang in there, Chief.

Shawn, I absolutely love everything about this car! Second year production of this car. A neighbor had a 71 first year when I was a kid. 351 4V Cleveland... love that color too.

I watched a Carroll Shelby interview to other day, and in it he clearly stated that the Pantera is indeed an All American car and development, he said that deTomaso got to put its name on it, which was in fact about the only italian part of the entire vehicle.

Glad I wasn’t the only one that watched that interview and was like, summmbitch. LOL. I posted the same comment before reading yours.

And that's not true! The chassis was design by Dallara and the frame by Ghia (a company awned by De Tomaso). Regards
@CHUUMPASS4 жыл бұрын
@@miguelgarr576 so you're saying Mr. Shelby lied ? and you know better. Besides, the Pantera went into production in 1971, Dallara did not even exist and wasn't even founded then. The Pantera is an American car.
@wolfchild48654 ай бұрын
@@CHUUMPASS maybe he didn't lie intentionally, but he still said a big bullshit. Let's look at the facts: First of all, De Tomaso is an Italian company located in Modena, Italy. The chassis of the Pantera was entirely designed by engineer Giampaolo Dallara, (who shortly after founded his racing car company in Parma, Italy). The car was assembled at the Vignale plants in Turin, Italy. It perfectly embodies the philosophy of the Italian sports car of the 70s, being deliberately inspired by Lamborghini and Maserati of the same period with which it was supposed to compete. So, how can one say that there is no Italian parts on the vehicle and how can it be defined as 'all American car' ? In America, the Pantera would never have been born; it would have been a completely different car.

I remember back in the late 80's having a poster of Pantera, this car never got hits true Recognition. This is an Italian muscle car powered by American V8, can't go wrong 👍🏼
@GoogleEqualsEvil5 жыл бұрын
The De Tomaso Pantera was designed by AMERICAN designer Tom Tjaarda. Born, raised, and educated in the USA. So American muscle / super car, assembled in Italy.

Definitely one of the sexiest American cars ever built. Would be great to see what a 2020 Pantera might look like. Probably not much different from this one because the design has held up so well over the years. The 351 Cleveland in a car that is that light is pretty awesome. I had a Ford Elite when I was in my early 20's that had a 351 Cleveland in it. If I knew then what I know now I would have pulled that engine before I scrapped that car. Great episode man keep em comin. ...... Hey Shawn ... Still waiting on an episode with Jonathan Ward from ICON. 😁
