Always fun. It's worth noting that the jack is an *output* jack, not input, and the instrument does not get any power from the amplifier at all. Like a passive guitar or bass, the movement of the tone bars causes a current to be induced in the coils of the pickups (which have permanent magnets). That current is then converted to a voltage which is read by the amp.

Ray Manzarek tells a story about writing "Riders on the Storm", and how the bass player showed up after they had written a lot of the song. The bass player asked what the bass line was, and Manzarek told him how easy it was, showing him what he had been been playing on the keyboard. The bass player's response was "easy for you!", and then he showed Manzarek the weird, nearly impossible hand positions required to play it on guitar. They recorded it using the bass guitar, and subsequently used the Piano Bass for live performances. (Anyone can play it on keyboards.)

The Doors used various bassists on every studio album. Some albums included three different bass players on a few songs. Other albums included a single bass player on as many as half of the songs. On two of the albums that were produced after Jim Morroson's death, they used 4 and 5 different bassists. As far as I can tell, Doug Lubahn who played bass on three classic Doors albums, was the only bassist who was ever offered a permanent position with The Doors. Doug played 7 songs on Strange Days and all but two songs on Waiting for The Sun. He played less on Soft Parade. He declined The Doors' offer because he wanted to stay with his own band, Clear Light. On the other studio songs and on all of their live performances, Ray Mazarek played the bass parts on either his keyboards or his Fender Rhodes piano bass.

I know that they did blend a lot of the Rhodes bass into recordings. As a bass guitarist these are probably my favorite keyboard. I love when keyboardists replace bass guitar with a Rhodes. It sounds so chunky. I personally think it sounds a lot better than a synth bass replacing a bass guitar.

I bet that the arches in the keys allow for easier glissandos. also isn't a standard keyboard 88 keys, going all the way down to an A0? I have a couple keyboards with 20 to 30 fewer keys and they both go down to a low C.
@siliconpeasants10234 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily standard. Keyboards, if not necessarily pianos, go anywhere from two to seven octaves. There are even one octave keyboards that don’t look like piano keys; they’re sequencer interfaces and aren’t meant to be played normally.

One thing that upsets me a bit on my 1981 Mark II Rhodes is that the keybed is very noisy. I kind of hear the same kind of 'keypress noise" by the end of your video when you play that bass line. Are the Rhodes keys know to be noisy, in general, (which I suppose would not be a concern when playing it on a gig with loud amps) or should I be concerned about this being a specific problem of my unit?

I am very pleased that an artist of your age knows about Ray Manzerk, he was a musical genius. BTW if boring tape recorders did not exist you might find it hard to listen to the multi-track recordings from the 1960s and 1970s. Keep up the great videos. Richard, Retired audio engineer. PS. Last year my friend bought his wife a new Bossendorfer butterfly grand. I had never seen one except on your video, as an engineer I have been in many recording studios and to see and hear one was an experience. He had the top line computer installed that is claimed to reproduce the exact playing of the artist, he had the Elton John million dollar piano show on disc. Sounded fine but when his wife played it it seemed to have more expression. What are your thoughts on that system? Thank you for your time.
@ThePianoforever6 жыл бұрын
The tape recorder comment was just a joke, we actually have an Ampex tape recorder we will be using for mastering in the future. The Bosendorfer Butterfly piano is a fantastic instrument, and that's awesome you got to see and hear one! I have seen that very same computer system, installed in a Yamaha CX piano, and it seemed to do an excellent job of reproducing a piano performance. The difference in expression you were hearing was most likely due to the way Elton John performed the original piece. If he didn't do a lot of dynamic shifts, and your friend's wife did, then her performance would have sounded much more expressive.
@richardd.98166 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for your time. Of course I new you were kidding about tape recorders after all the beautiful vintage instruments you have shared. You are correct, I have never heard Elton playing live. Kevin told me that to him the the piano plays identically, live or on disc. All the best.

@ThePianoforever5 жыл бұрын
If you ask different people they will give you different answers, but the general rule is keyboards get bass amps. The suitecase model came with it's own amp that is very nice. We use a Roland KC350 amp and it works well. We had a smaller Roland amp and it had a lot of background hiss, so we found the KC350 used and it works well.
