I am really happy to see everyone enjoying the video and leaving such encouraging and positive comments! I wanted to mention that the case being demonstrated towards the end of the video can be obtained on amazon and measures at 12" by 8" by 3.5" and the fit for this set is just barely enough. If you have a nice set and it's not very large, then this case would work well for you. If you have a larger set then you may want to consider finding a slightly larger case. Knights will always have slight differences because they are individually carved by hand. It's likely each set will comprise of knights made by the same carver and be selected to match. However, it is impossible to make them identical. Personally, I like it this way and those knights are well carved and a really nice design.

Hi Alex, Good review again. I like the way you compare your recent purchase with another set of pieces. It highlights the similarities and the differences of both sets. You are right about gilded, being coated with a golden color. Probably done to make it more attractive, or look more valuable? I think the quality of the pieces from Chessbazaar is good, and their customer service is great. I was planning to get from them the Fischer-Spassky pieces, but I opted and purchased the Empire Staunton instead. Keep up the good reviews, and I look forward to the next one.

My first thought when I saw one of the knights was curving more to one side was “odd that a high end chess set would be so noticeably off center”. But after you showed that this is the case for all of the knights, I assume now that it is completely intentional, in that, since most will grab the piece with their right hand, the curve slightly leftward on the piece will allow more room for the thumb to comfortably fit on the right side. What are your thoughts?

That pistol case hack is pure GENIUS. A fraction of the cost and tenfold protection. 10/10. Too bad I just splurged on a nice HoS wooden case lolol Bought it for a Fischer Spassky 72 wooden set so I'll be curious to see how it compares to the CB one you have there.
@AlSuChess3 жыл бұрын
I think you can still get a pistol case like that, a friend actually recommended it to me. I would go with a slightly larger one though, otherwise the pieces are a little too crammed, even this Fischer Spassky. I still keep them in the case, it's just that the fit is a little tight. I don't know how usual it is to keep chess pieces in the pistol cases though, not sure how people would look at you if you brought it to a large chess event.

Great idea to use a pistol case! And it's MUCH cheaper than any typical chess set box you can buy. Now, what's this Fischer-Spassky plastic set at HOS? I only see ones named "Fischer" (without the Spassky), and the king looks different on those than on the set you show.
@AlSuChess3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the case is really nice! I just wish it was a little bit bigger! The one in the video, pieces are a bit snug. You may be right, the plastic set may be a Fischer without spassky. I would have to look into that to be sure. Thanks for watching as always!

Great review and excellent idea comparing to other sets of the same reproduction type. I recently also bought this Chess Bazaar set in antiqued Boxwood and my thoughts overall mirrors yours. Yes the Knights overall seemed a bit on the bigger side, so its not just me, and your Knights are the same as mine in that the head/snout shape of the Knights is also quite elongated compared to other Fischer Spassky Knights where the length of the head/snout pretty much lines up with the bust. I don't mind the antiqued look, quite a nice look overall and for the price as you said a good qulaity set.
@AlSuChess3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your purchase, I've had a chance to play with this set and I think the pieces are balanced well and can endure both slow and faced paced games pretty well. I think if I didn't have all these other sets to compare to, I wouldn't be as picky about small things.
@markn35862 жыл бұрын
I haven't experienced this with my version of this chess set that I bought from USCF a long time ago, but....the deep crenulations on the rooks were always a weak point with this set. Over the years I've seen a lot of rooks in tournaments with one or two of the peaks missing. I suspect a dropped rook that lands on its top causes this issue.
@AlSuChess2 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent point about the rooks, I will be sure to mention this detail in one of my future videos!

Thanks Eric! I think the overall quality of the wood is high, especially for the low price. I am not entirely sure about the yellowish tint to the light pieces, it's a little more vivid than I am generally used to. Other than that, fine pieces, not imperfections.

I like your videos they're pretty interesting. I will say however that I think if you can keep the videos a bit more concise, in the 10-15 minute range that would be ideal. For example I find myself skipping the first 2-3 minutes to get to the review. Other times the explanation for a specific feature goes on a little longer than it needs to. I'll FF a few seconds to get to the next segment/piece/item (I'm talking in general on the videos, I've watched a handful so far). Keep up the good work!

Why is it that when you get extra pieces, it's always a queen? Do manufacturers assume if you're going to lose a piece, it's going to be a queen? Why not get one queen and one king? I'm confused.
@patrick6190 Жыл бұрын
It’s for promoting a pawn, usually the pawn is promoted to a queen and on rare occasions the original queen is still on the board so a second one is nice to have.

Reykjavik plastic set is the one that resembles the Fischer Spassky set. The plastic set in your video. Is a common China triple weighted set. In name only and has nothing to do with the set used in 1972. I got my Fischer Spassky set from Royal Chess Mall for $80 @ the time. I am not a fan of antiqued Boxwood. Most don't do it right. It looks fake and not natural. I just go with plain Boxwood and over time it will age like it should naturally.

I agree with you entirely on the look of the antique boxwood not looking too normal. It's an attempt kind of like faded jeans, true antique will always look nicer. Thats a great price on a Fischer Spassky Set Chris! I might have to check Royal Chess Mall out myself! Thanks!

I own over five chess sets of between $100.00 and $200.00 and I know how to move every piece. Are you insinuating that people who buy moderately inexpensive chess sets don’t know how to play? I just need to let you know I’m not going to use my $3500.00 air loom chess set for everyday play. Just saying.
@AlSuChess3 жыл бұрын
No I would not assume anything like that, neither would I mean to come across like someone who would make assumptions like that, but sometimes I'll ramble on unfiltered. Chess bazaar does send instructions on how to play chess when you order chess pieces through them, regardless of the price which I personally find interesting, considering other chess distributors don't seem to do the same. From one angle it makes total sense to receive instructions on playing chess with a purchase of chess pieces, and you would think every chess distributor should follow those guidelines, but at the same time say you ordered a one of a kind $1000 set and you get instructions on how to move pieces, I personally find it weird, comical. For the same reason cheaper chess boards come with engraved notation, but generally more expensive chess boards don't, probably because they assume that if you are ordering a custom sized $400 chess board, you probably don't need notations on the side. But no, I wouldn't assume anything about the players or their ability to play chess.
@denisdooley15403 жыл бұрын
@@AlSuChess I had this discussion on a collectors group. I don't think it's so much that they do or don't know how to figure out notation without the alpha numericals on the board so much as you don't want to put letters and numbers all over a fine piece of furniture, honestly. You can get a nice wood analysis board for $100 give or take it. Use that and let the $400+ board look pretty.
@AlSuChess3 жыл бұрын
@@denisdooley1540 Yeah that makes sense! So far I only have several boards so my perspective comes mainly from a small inventory.
