Reykjavik Plastic Chess Pieces from Wholesale chess website, a solid plastic chess set for tournaments that very closely resembles my 1972 Fischer Spassky Chess Set You have seen before. In this video I talk a little bit about some things I like and some things I don't like about this set. Interestingly, if you look online, it says that the king is only 45 grams and as you will see in the video, my measurements very slightly different, so I am not sure if I had a problem with my scale or if the weight of the pieces varies that much. I am always looking for new as well as old interesting chess sets, plastic and wood, in order to bring you guys more great chess videos. As always, thank you for watching and be sure to stay tuned for future videos!
My dear chess friends! Although it's been in the works for a few months now, I am excited to share with you that I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join several chess affiliate programs starting 12/8/21. As a chess youtube creator, some of the chess distributors are starting to see me as a valuable component in helping grow our chess community. Although there are not many chess affiliate programs offered at this time, I have joined so far House of Staunton, Wholesale Chess and USChess sales. Being an affiliate member does not mean I work for the company or that I am being sponsored by them; what it means is that the links which I post to chess merchandise from those companies will be affiliated and if you click into those links and decide to make a purchase there, a very small fraction of the proceeds may end up going to help support this channel and allow it to grow, for which I am thankful to you all for your wondeful support. Many people suggested I create a donation link, which I am still not entirely sure about. With affiliate links, if you wish to help support this channel, you have the opportunity to make your contribution this way. Once again, thank you everyone for your support. I will edit the previous videos to include affiliate link so be sure to check them out. Thanks again, have a blessed day!

Don't let anyone tell you that you have too many chess sets, we support you 100%. Btw, Wholesale Chess is owned by House of Staunton.

Thanks a lot! I guess I didn't realize there was a connection between the two distributors, but it makes sense now! Thank you for the encouragement!

Very nice video. The 2nd plastic knight you showed has some really good definition for a plastic set. Looking forward to your next video.

Thanks a lot! Yes the second knight was from the blitz plastic set I show in one of my previous videos

good video. More videos of this kind should be made. And I like plastic version's thin bottom felt. When I move plastic piece with thin felt, it is easier to hear ground-knocking sound. Quite pleasant.

Thank you for commenting! I think plastic chess sets can be quite practical for many people, not only from a financial stand point but also from the very fact that chess pieces can be tossed around and taken wherever without the thought of damaging them!

I just came back from my first OBT tournament in 15 years (finished 5th in a 42 player event) and having one of your videos to watch is the best way to celebrate. I have the black-and-natural version of this set. I loaned it to one of my students for the rest of the year. It's a really nice set of pieces on the cheap side of town, but great in terms of quality and looks.

Hey that's awesome congratulations you did well, 5th is solid because I know that in those tournaments people tend to play a lot more seriously than online! I miss going to live tournaments too! For me it's always been stressful to go, yet I went either way! Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video!

I love watching your videos,,how i wish to have one plastic fisher set one day,,its frustrating that i cant buy sets from the US,with many affordable set for sale in there,,shipping cost is more expensive than the set alone😣,,
@AlSuChess
@AlSuChess 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have heard other people express their frustration about the same issue of not having the ability to acquire some of these sets due to overwhelmingly high shipping costs. They need to have distribution centers more evenly spread out wrought the world so that way prices for shipping are more reasonable.

Thanks for this interesting review. I tried my luck and ordered the chess set from HoS. The transport costs to Europe are higher than the value of the goods. 😁😁
@AlSuChess
@AlSuChess 3 жыл бұрын
Really! Wow I wonder if the shipping costs are like that everywhere? I am not terribly too far from HOS, probably about 400 miles and usually the shipping costs are about 10-15 dollars, sometimes free.

@@AlSuChess Hi Alex! Thanks for your answer. The transport costs of around $ 35 with FedEx to Germany are absolutely fine. Unfortunately, I can't find this plastic chess set anywhere near here. The offers from the Far East do not have the same quality as the set presented by you. I love the 1972 Fischer-Spassky set and i always wanted one made of wood. I'm curious how the plastic set feels
@AlSuChess
@AlSuChess 3 жыл бұрын
@@petronny1 wow ok yeah 35 dollars isn't bad but I see what you mean, the shipping ends up costing more than the set itself. I bought my Fischer Spassky wooden set from chess bazaar some time back and I like the quality, wood in my opinion is a more solid quality than plastic, but it's a but higher in price. I guess it all depends on how much quality do you want out of a chess set.

I picked up the Reykjavik set from HOS in the same color natural & burgandy color. I was able to buy the set on Cyber Monday sale last week for 16.00. The felt was thin and the seams were fairly visible with spurs and need finishing work. The natural looked like a weird skin color. Black and white may have been a better choice IDK. I noticed the outside base of the kings have HOS embossed on them to identify the origin of the set.

Alex, I think it's fair to talk about the "crown" of the king, when it comes to talk about the "top" of the king, since that portion of the piece is/was meant to emulate a king's coronet. I like more a round top border of the crown of the king as well. Buy all the chess sets that you want! do what really makes you happy, and THANK YOU for sharing them all with us. We (I'd say) pleased! Very good video.

Great review Alex, I have this set and agree with you on the felt issue. It's the only negative I have found with the set but I don't mind too much as I only ever use it with a vinyl or silicone board. Other than that I think it's a great set.

The bobby fischer ultimate chess set is king when it comes to plastic sets. I'll never buy any other plastic set and honestly I'll probably never have to with the weight design. I wouldn't want a set that's prone to rattle.
@AlSuChess
@AlSuChess 3 жыл бұрын
Without the added weight I feel like the pieces wouldn't be as stable. I'd like to get my hands on some unweighted sets here soon to evaluate their overall balance! Thanks for watching!
