I owned that same car, got it new off the lot at Lerews Ford in East Berlin, Pennsylvania on August 21, 1972 exactly like the one in this video, except the interior was black, lasted 18 years, got 368k miles. What a beautiful car, could haul anything and everything.

@Hoboelmo233 жыл бұрын
I owned one exactly like this, it was my first car. It was low milage and stayed within the family for many years. When it was finally traded in the late 80s, it had over 287,000 miles on it. The faux paneling faded, the yellow color faded to a light yellow, but that 351 Cleveland motor never faded. It never failed, was always cared for. I went on to own a 1972 Gran Torino Sport, a 1972 like the one in the movie Gran Torino and I owned a 1976 Gran Torino 4 door. All had that powerhouse 351 Cleveland motor. Ford did something right with this line of cars.

My uncle was a Ford executive and came out with his family for a combination business trip / vacation. He picked up one of these from the San Jose plant (I think the one he had was made there) the one he had was just like this, only red and I think also had power windows. With his family and ours that made 8 of us riding around for a week in the hot summer. My cousin and I sat in the very back, and I can tell you those seats were not as fun as they looked. We got car sick from the air conditioning never making it back there, and being at the far end and facing backwards. It was still a fun week though.

How long did cars built in 1972 last when you actually exposed them to the outside world? Seeing this car is so exceptional because it shows how it looked as advertised by the maker and not like they normally were after as little as 2 years out of the showroom. And frankly - the front seats are a brown landscape of plastic death and even the standing car with the engine shut down makes the tyres squeal. How could modern cars be much worse than that?

Even the family cars were elegant back then. They also had a full frame underneath. The trend today is make them cheaper with more air bags.

I grew up with a '70 Torino wagon and learned to drive in it. Same engine. Not much power. Crappy gas mileage. It was tan, but the same interior color. Cancer finally killed it around 1990. Still looked pretty good. The torque boxes and frame rails were toast. Neighbor had a forest green one the same year as this one. Green interior though. The mom had a hard time getting it in and out of the garage and the body was all beat up. That way back was meant for kids only. No adults could ever sit there long.

I graduated high school that year. My Dad bought a '72 Gran Torino Sport new in the fall of '71. It had delivery miles , too, When he drove it home that October afternoon. I was allowed to take it into town and back for about 30 minutes. I drove down one of the main boulevards in my small town. I rolled down the windows and turned up the radio. It was playing"Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" by the Jollies. Doo you think any of my friends were out there to see me in all my ultra-hipness? Of course not, but I was extremely happy for those moments then to have driven a then-new Torino. One good looking car, even if your friends DON'T see you.

Follow up: The Torino was destroyed in September 20, 2019 due to the flood in Beaumont, Texas as a result of tropical depression Imelda. The owner had stopped to get a cup of coffee when torrents of rain cascaded down Beaumont's main street. He tried to save it by holding on to the rear bumper but it got caught up in the torrential flood waters along with cars, trailers, homes and other debris. Luckily the owner was later found alive six miles down river holding the license plate. He was crying to the rescue team that he had only taken the car out that morning for the first time in a year. It had 502 miles on it. A month later the Torino was found in a homeowner's backyard swimming pool by a police helicopter surveying the area. The Torino was sold as scrap metal and all that was left was the rear license plate and the plastic Jesus on the dash.. Down in Texas they say "I don't care if it rains or freezes, as long as I got my plastic Jesus riding on the dashboard of my car. I can go a hundred miles an hour, as long as I got the almighty power, right up there by my pair of fuzzy dice." Believe it or not?

My mom had the 72 coupe. I remember the night we picked it up. I wasn't happy. I wanted something from the 60's. I eventually grew to love it. It was brown. My mother hit a cow. Someone had to come out and shoot the cow. I was at a dance at junior high school 1978. She was coming to pick me up. They fixed the car, but it didn't drive right. She traded it in for a 1979 Toyota Celica Hatchback. It was brown too.
