On "My Car Story" we're in Chicago on 8-29-19.
We're looking at a 1972 Porsche 914 in Silver Paint. The car comes with the factory 4 cylinder mid-engine.
The car's Owner is Scott Vermillion. Scott’s had this car since 2018. Scott shares he was not looking for a car and a guy at a car show drove up, put a for sale sign on it, and after some quick research the car was purchased right there at the car show.

Great video, Lou! It was an honor to have you feature my Porsche 914!! For what it's worth, I was mistaken in the interview...the headlights are motor operated and the red key is for valet use (the black key works the ignition, too).

Those black plastic circles on the back of each headlight motor could be rotated by hand to put the lights up or down in case the electric headlight motor failed. But I never experienced that with mine. The headlights were the same as the VW Bug used so they were cheap as heck to replace. The bottom of the storage compartment you rest your left arm upon while driving could tend to come loose over time, especially of someone over packed it, so your wallet might be best stored elsewhere. As I recall the ignition key also unlocked the glove compartment lock which is to the upper left of the glove compartment door. My speedometers never bounced like yours were doing in the video, so you might want to get that checked out. Those plastic clips for the Targa top near the engine could break off if you let someone else take the top off and on, and the black rubber ones at the rear of the car could wear through as the summers and winters passed, so having an extra few of those wasn't a bad idea. Keep that beauty off the road in winter and it will give you a very great amount of pleasure. How I envy you.

I only ever made two changes to the 914s I owned. First, you had to put in stainless steel heater boxes because the factory ones would rust way fast. You knew you had stainless steel heater boxes if there was a bunch of clicking noises after you shut it off from running for awhile. This was due to the different cooling rates of the metal. Second, I would put a tennis ball between the driver's seat and the rear window because it would come loose and clunk around a lot. The tennis ball would stop that. The frame would tend to rust out so you wanted to keep it out of the salty winter streets. The metal platform that the battery sat upon would always rust out as well. Lastly, the jack points on the side of the car would rust out too. Other than that, the 914 is my favorite car of all time.

Nice car, Lou. I purchased a 1972 from Porsche Cars Great Britain Ltd. in the fall of 1971 when I was stationed in the UK from 1971-75. Unfortunately, I hit some black ice and totaled it. I purchased a 2002 and shipped it home in 1974. I wish I had both cars now. Thanks for bringing back some memories, Lou!

A friend of mine had a '71 911T and I looked down on 914s during the '70s, thinking these were Porsches for the poor. And when I did see one (and there were plenty around back then) they were usually beat to snot and looked awful. Now, fuggedaboudittt. They're great. Some car guy once said they look the same from the front as they do from the back so no one knows when you're driving in reverse. Great find. Love that the owner likes keeping things stock.

My best friend, in high school, father had one of these, back in the early 80's as his daily driver. The very first day my buddy was allowed to drive it, we spent about half an hour in the back Safeway parking lot, doing doughnuts, going forward maxed out in second, jamming on the e-brake and spinning the car...… We found the midengined design, low center of gravity, a good power to weight ratio, irresistible for CHIPS style stunts and high speed driving. Even after, as a little kid, we all bad mouthed them an "squashed bugs"..... Any doubters of this fun car need to give it a try. And, yes, the first thing my friend's Dad did to the car was carb replacement and some goofy thing with the exhaust. What ever he did, my 440 could barely hold it off..... Beautiful car and brings back some really scary memories..... I'm lucky I'm still walking the Earth.... Fun car.

Again another superb presentation Lou. My best friend in high school and we graduated in 1977, he had a 1974 914 2.0 in bright yellow with a caramel interior and he kept it in mint condition. We used to go to Ocean City, Maryland all the time in the summer from Nothern Virginia and it's about 120-mile trip, man we had so much fun in that car! It's funny he still owns the car to this day, still sitting in his garage waiting to be restored!

The Porsche people used to scoff at these and the mechanics hated to work on them. Even now, a lot Of the Euro shops won’t work on them nor will they work on 912’s. That said, I love this pristine little car and especially appreciate the fact it hasn’t been molested. A car I would love to own.

I love the 914. The most accessible Porsche. I noticed on the door tag, "manufactured by Volkswagenwerk ag". So, these were made by Volkswagen? I've never owned one, just always thought they were cool. Like a Fiat X1/9. They are probably the most hated Porsche by purists, but I still love them.

My bro in law had one in *FUCHSIA!!!!!* It was nearly pink! I liked it very much, then in around 2005 I had a rough one (in white) for a while that I sold (due to finances) and still think about it today. They were great little cars. Kudos to this guy for taking care of it.

Love this car. I had a '73 1.7 litre, from '83-'87; same color, most of the same options (not the rear defrost), same wheels, same hubs, etc. Really enjoyed watching the video, reminded me of a lot of good times in my college days, driving back and forth between Oregon and Idaho ;-) This one's in great condition, lucky find!

I had a '74 1.8 from '84 to '88 tooling around Ohio State, occasionally driving down to south eastern Virgina to visit my brother at William and Mary. Mine started out brown but ended up Porsche Guard's Red. But some jackass turned left in front of me next to the football stadium without the right of way and ended it. Yours, despite the smaller engine, was slightly faster than mine because of the new emissions controls in 1974. How I miss it. Do you recall how hard it was to find that car in a crowded parking lot if you didn't take the time to remember exactly where you parked it? That thing could hide behind anything.

Hi Johan...I questioned the black spray in the trunk when I bought the car, too. What I found out was that the original owner purchased Ziebart rust-proofing when purchased new. The car came with the Ziebart paperwork and warranty. That explained the black spray. And that coating kept my car relatively rust free...so it was a good thing.

I also have a 72 914. Also kept it stock except mine came with momo wheels. Not sure if momos were an option when buying new. Headlights are not vaccum driven. Electric motor is used in each. Thanks for vid. Now its easy for me to show off exactly what i have when asked

Only 18k miles but looks like less than 8k miles. I put a few miles on one of these in the early 80's that a buddy owned. Not my favorite car, more of a back up due to requiring work to keep it running plus it had been in an accident but not repaired properly. I think it was bought and sold for less than $1k back then. Didn't really appreciate it then but, wow, I'd sure appreciate this one today.

I found stock 914/4 to be under powered....so added big bore kit, Isky cam , ported heads , larger valves and dual Weber 40's and header...big improvement and made it way more fun to drive. Sold it to a kid who put a Subaru six in it then wrecked it...

@@loucostabile Yeah....I was sick about it, but it was a one car accident and the young fella walked away....even came to my house to tell me what happened. Edit: it's nice to see cars that have been kept in original condition....I'm even happy to see an old station wagon from the 60's/70's on the road...not many of those survived the wrecking yard after they wore out....I mean back in those day's who the heck wanted a wagon...or a four door?

That is memory lane for me as they pan the camera across the interior. Wow. I owned a ‘74 2.0 litre same colour with mag wheels. I had and loved it for 7 years and sold it to a bank manager for the same price I paid earlier. ( I still have the original owners manual as a wonderful souvenir.). CMJ #anabundantlife. I still have the brochure as well. I believe there are about 180 vehicles left in the world today. Yes. I also drove it many times up and down Chicago’s lakeshore and the “Magnificent Mile. (I’m a Canadian)

@@scottvermillion3993 looks like a excellent preserved car, it's harder than most people think to keep a car in that undamaged condition for 50 years. One thing that I would strongly suggest is either the full factory battery cover from 75-76 or a 100% sealed AGM battery.

Actually, the four cylinder I think it was the boxer motor from the VW 411. The camper motor was the Beetle motor I think.

Electric motors raise the headlights- there is a knob on the back in case they don’t. The red key is the valet key and should only open the doors and start the ignition. The Black should that and the trunk / glovebox.

I had a 1970 914 from 1971 to 1978. Loved the car. the most unreliable part of the car was the Bosch fuel injection system. (Headlights are operated by an electric motor on each headlight, not vacuum). How much did you pay for it???????????????

I found one in Phoenix Arizona but it didn't have a title? It was at a shop. But I never had the money to buy it. I could have bought it but didn't. I never knew how to negotiate and I was very nieve back then.

Is that what Pontiac modeled the Fiero after?? That’s what this Porsche reminds me of, I don’t know if they had as much trouble from these as the Fieros had. Of course the 4 cylinders that the Fieros had were totally junk engines! The Quad 4 engines were one of the biggest mistakes that GM ever came out with, my opinion! Anyway, good deal Lou, as always!

70 thru 72 had the worst shift linkage ever. Update it with a 73 and up gearbox and linkage.
