...boy, Lou, you could just see how over-the-top excited Dave Long was at being on "My Car Story" with his lovely blood orange '72 Type 14 Karmann Ghia...oooh, la!! ...don't know if you're familiar with the back story on this lovely rounded pack of fun that VW sold between 1957-74....it was actually designed by the Turin, Italy design firm of Carrozerria Ghia...hence the smooth, sexy curves of this model; so at odds with the upright Beetle and the later Rabbit...AND why the heaters were rather non-existant...this car was designed by Italians whose version of winter may see temps in the high 30's and low 40's; but NOTHING compared with Northern Europe and North America...the functional front end defroster scoops were helpful to de-fogging the windshield but notoriously ineffective in actually heating the interior... . ...the actual construction of the vehicle did not occur at the Wolfsburg facility but at the German coachworks plant of Karmann, located in nearby Westphalia town of Osnabruck...it is worthy of note that the Karmann plant was also responsible for such other cars as the Audi A4, VW Golf and Sirocco, the BMW Series 6 Coupe, Ford Escort RS Cosworth, the Chrysler Crossfire and the Mercedes-Benz CLK Cabriolet... (no. really...amazing, but true..)... .. nyone ...anyone who had a love affair with the Beetle would, if they had a scintilla of sports sensibilty, become nearly obsessed with the beautiful styling of the Karmann Ghia...they combine the simplicity and utility with a fun, racy looking exterior...truly a hybrid made in automotive heaven...

A 9mm wrench won't take apart anything on these cars. Try a 10 and 13mm wrench for that. A 17mm will also be helpful for removing the engine. I wrenched on these cars for nearly 50 years.

@@davidcoats2897 , this is one of those conversations where past the first minute, the dynamics of all the variables as part of the entirety, seem to intrude and take over.
