When I was four, my parents bought a new 1960 Bonneville 4-door Vista. When this gentleman opened the trunk, a rush of memory came back! That houndstooth pattern liner in the trunk was the same as our family car. Obviously this car wasn't bought just for comfort, but it looks so great with that Wide Track stance, that that would've sold me, even without their famous 'triple deuce' setup. Looking at this amazing car one can see why Pontiac was climbing in both the sales charts and the public's notice. Thanks so much for showing us!

The "Pontiac Drag Car" you speak of Lou, is the 1959-60 Catalina Super Duty. I owned a 1960 Catalina Super Duty 2-door hardtop in 1980. It was a John DeLorean "idea car" in 1959, like his El Catalina concept for a Pontiac version of the Chevy El Camino. These cars were raced by Ace Wilson and Arnie Beswick of Royal Pontiac in the Detroit area. They all featured the 389-V8 with Tripower, a 3-speed manual floor shift by Saginaw, dual exhaust and 325 HP in that 389. PMD continued making the special order Catalina Super Duty through 1964, including the now legendary 421-V8 "Swiss Cheese" frame 1963 model.

My high school buddy in the 1960s used to take this 'family car' to high school and we made some very FAST entertaining speed runs down Hwy 17 in the Santa Clara Valley. That thing was a big behemoth, but when you 'put the spurs to it', that thing would spin the tires taking off even if you were going almost 60! We wished we could have hijacked it long enough to cruise up 17 to Santa Cruz, the spot back then. Thanks for the nostalgia blast! Oh yeah, I think we made the speedo needle hit past 120 a few times, also...

That was my first car I owned when I turned 17 in 1968. My Mom purchased it brand new in 1959 . Handed down to me when I got my drivers license. Same color as yours but had red and white interior. Had a quadrajet carburetor on my 389. Was nice and peppy. The motor mounts busted once and the carburetor linkage locked up with the accelerator floored. That was a horrible experience. Had to shut the ignition off before it would crash. Sold it to my friend about 10 months later when I purchased my first brand new car, a 1969 GTO which I ordered from the factory.

Revisiting here, it's just a joy to see this lightly-optioned Catalina. Pontiac offered such a great set of specs for what was really a quite low-priced car in '59. The Pontiac V-8 was one of the best from its intro four years earlier. Certainly the Hydra-Matic was a great auto transmission. I always find that, for me, the two-door sedan variant as here is more successful in styling than the equivalent in the MOPAR family. That one has the interesting rear quarter vent as did the later Valiant. This car just looks so 'right' with that Wide-Track stance. I always find it a shame, Lou, that cars like this, without many options, are usually passed over for retention or restoration. Look at your own channel with the '59 Bonneville! I would've been tempted to buy something close to this in 1959 because it's a great car at a great price. And again, thanks for highlighting it for us!

Possibly my favourite featured car yet. It is surprisingly not a 4spd.

I never was a fan of much of anything from 1959 except the Cadillac and Chevy Impala somewhat. 59 was a styling transitional period from the finned late 50s into the 60s. I was a tyke in 59' but remember all these cars from that period. In 59 Chevy still had the best lineup with the Corvette and Impala. 59'Impalas were extremely popular and were all over the place.

I had a Canadian 2 door hardtop with bullets on the top of the quarter panels and a radio in the middle of the back seat. It was called the Grand Parisienne but unlike the American version which has a Cadillac frame, the Canadian model is on a regular Chevy frame. So in order to have the widetrack look, you had to use spacers and wide tires. I have pictures of me with the band, The Clash in front of my red 59 , taken the night of one of their concerts in the 1980s

PS--Pontiac described that seat cover design as the "off the shoulder" look. It's highlighted in the 1957 brochure, and continues here. Gives an inexpensive yet distinctive touch to this lovely interior.

Love these early muscle cars what a keeper, low mileage and impeccably clean good job my cousin‘s husband used to buy a new three carburetor Pontiac convertible new every other year and they were always for speed cars driving on the crooked roads in West Virginia on the old conventional tires that come onhe would have to replace his tire tires. All four of them. It was either at the end of every month or the second month, crooked roads take a toll on bias tires.

@@loucostabile I was an old street racer back in the day. I was hoping he would stay in it just a little bit when he was beside that yellow Camaro.🤣
