In 1972 I bought a Volvo 142, new. It had AC, but the factory didn’t install the unit….that was installed on delivery by the dealership. The glove box had to be sacrificed and in its place was ductwork (which visually looked seamless). The Volvo 142/144 was a relatively cheap vehicle then, and a favorite of college students. But, the P1800 was expensive! And your vehicle shows why. Fantastic design and engineering….plus plenty of power. My 142 was HEAVY and it’s tiny engine would burn through plugs and points at a stunning rate….and to continually get a mechanic to fix it was really expensive…..so, my interest in doing the work myself was born. Great video!

So, the trade for the Volvo was a VW Beatle…..I traded the Volvo I. For a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix, aquamarine, white leather, and white half landau roof….

I ordered a new 1972 1800E through the PX while finishing my last tour in Vietnam. Picked it up somewhere on Long Island after returning home. Was the beautiful dark green color with tan (gold) leather interior. I seem to remember that specs said the engine was 135 hp. Under the glove box was an enclosed metal box that held the “brains” for the electronic fuel injection. I believe it was one of the earliest cars, not the first though, to have “electronic” controls for fuel injection. The rear seat back could be folded down which gave it a “two seater” look plus provided a shelf for storage. The small storage box between the seats on my car had a lid on it. To me the car handled great in the corners, steering was direct and perfect, very comfortable on road trips, and gave great gas mileage. Put just over 200,000 miles on it and traded it in during the second fuel crisis on a 1980 Audi 5000 diesel which was the most least reliable car I’ve ever owned……by far. So much so that I swore I’d never own another Audi and still am true to my word. Loved that Volvo so much that if they were still making it I’d buy a new one today.

The first time I saw one of these, I was a kid watching the actor Roger Moore driving a first gen on the television show "The Saint". Was saddened to hear about Gordon and his 3.3M mile car. I saw a television show many years ago where he spoke about the car and the history of his travels. It may have been on PBS. With your "Would you rather" scenarios... First I would take the Volvo. It's like the commercial where you see folks forced to make the decision to climb into the running car, or the shack with chainsaws and the "shady" monster in the background. The second scenario would make me choose the 51 Nash Healy because of the overall lines and look to the car.

The “E” stands for Einspritzen which means injection. The 1800 is the only car I know of that had an oil pressure and oil temperature gauge. I noticed that car seemed to have cloth interior, but I believe all 1800’s had leather. The 4 speed cars came with overdrive. The unique styling, with fin remnants, is odd but makes the design distinctive and memorable. The ES, estate, visually modernized the design. The 1973 Playboy Playmate of the Year was given a pink 1800ES. The 2006-2013 Volvo C30 was an attempt to bring back the 1800 mystique. Just FYI, Volvo is Latin for “I roll” so named because Volvo began in a factory that was previously a ball bearing manufacturer.

I bought mine in 1972 1800E. I drove 160 miles a day in this car. It rode like a dream and my mechanic said it’s engine was just like new even after 100,000 miles. It was a car I never wanted to part with but unfortunately when my wife became pregnant I had to sell it to buy a family car. People always stopped me and admired the beautiful 5 coat lacquer paint job. I’ve never seen a more beautiful car in my life. I’m 75 today and still wish I had that car.

I absolutely love these cars and it sucks I didn’t fit in it like I thought I would they’re very similar in size to a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia I’ve only Karman Ghia and I can say that it’s Karman Ghia‘s little bit bigger than that car in the interior space.. The crazy thing is Nash Metropolitan has more space than both of those cars and it has a smaller footprint, don’t quote me on that I will have to definitely check that out that is a car that I really want to buy and compare it to a bunch of cars.. Thank you so much for sharing your car with us and it’s never too late look for one they come up for sale on Facebook marketplace sometimes very very cheap like there was one for sale in my area for $5000 and I didn’t need that much the body was great and probably one of the best bodies I’ve seen

Back in 1982. I had a 72’ P1800ES manual with the electric overdrive. I ran that car for 60,000 miles and sold it for what I paid for it. Bought another P1800ES 2 years ago. This one is a 1973 manual with a Mustang T5 manual gear box. Still have the original Volvo gear box. No power steering means if the car isn’t moving it turns like a tractor. It definitely is a head turner car as it’s now 50 years old. The difference between the 72 and 73 is the 73 has the 5 mph front bumper on shock absorbers. Also the 73’ engine was detuned to meet California smog regulations requirements.

I’m super lucky and blessed =) To be 100% honest I only go to classic auto Mall about once a month maybe twice a month in the way that I shoot these cars I try to do anywhere between 20 to 30 cars in one day it’s a long day because Classic Automall is 5 1/2 hours down the road so it ends up being a 22 hour day. The last time I went out there I went to Kutztown town first and shot 6 Hudson’s at the Hudson museum and then went to classic automall and shot another 15 cars. It works out better that way for me because then I only have to shoot one day and then I have a whole mountain of content, I’m a huge fan of Doug demuro and have been for years. But I never got the way that he shot things like he spends six hours on one car I don’t spend that much time on one car I spent maybe between 20 to 30 minutes on one car. I don’t get to drive all the cars because of insurance reasons I don’t make the kind of money that I need to make to be able to afford the insurance policy and Classic Cars are a little bit different but once the spring/summer rolls around will be able to get out more. =) Great choices I 100% agree with you I think Mercedes-Benz is the pinnacle of overpriced overhyped, piles of junk but that’s just my opinion. My mom owns one and she says it’s $200 every time she takes it to the dealership to get her oil changed and I was like....... why

From ‘64 it became the 1800S, in 1970 the 1800E and in ‘72 the 1800ES was added, The P was dropped from 1800 in 1964. The reason why Volvo did not make the P1800 initially was that the Ofofstorm factory was dedicated to making the PV544 (the round back) and the Amazon and needed it for full capacity. The modern Torslanda factory was not in sight for several more years, hence the decision to allow an outside supplier to build the P1800. Jensen of the UK was the designated builder.

Volvo could only build one car under roof? It was just a weird situation just like companies selling their factories (but still wanted to build cars somehow)
@PhilDykshoorn

Seems weird, but that's what the books say on Volvo history. ln the end, they managed to 'make room' to manufacture the P1800 (and the PV544 was almost finished its production run and the Amazon was still bring churned out) when they realized that Jensen was not up the par for quality (re)assurance.

These are really cool looking cars with beautiful lines! 🤩 I do like the dash and the steering wheel on both models, the E three spoke, makes me think of the late 60s, early 70s Chrysler Plymouth Dodge steering wheels. Of the first group, I would choose this model, based on looks, but then I've always liked the look of Porsches of all eras, so the '65 would run a very close second! I do think the Juliet is a very appealing design also. In the second scenario it would be definitely be the '52 Healy all the way! Well IMO, anything other than a great classic automobile, will always seem lacking in some way, but personally one brand that I've just really never cared for and always seemed totally over inflated and rated to me, is Lexus. 🤔

WYR: 1) 356!, 2) The 51 Nash Healy - Price may not be an object but for rarity/purity I'll take the original. The KD was super rare (435 units?), but it seems like all were saved; there's not too hard to find even at local shows. On the Volvo - Immediately when the C30 came out in the US, my first thought was P1800ES. Same concept. Brother had a girlfriend with one, but she got the auto, sigh. Girls.

I have a 68 1800S. It has the 3 spoke steering wheel but the older chrome rocket ship gages. I'm not a fan of the two spoke myself. The car you showed us has air conditioning other wise the car has no dash vents. I have to admit the 1800 is poorly ventilated. The heater works great to be sure but there is just foot and defog vents only. There are outside air intakes for driver and passenger but if it's hot outside, doom on you. There is no way to cool the interior, the vent system can be used to cool the engine you just open the heater full and you don't need to run the fan if you are moving. It's just not a hot weather car.

Thank you so much for sharing that the vent windows don’t help? Does this car put out a lot of heat from the firewall I had a 67 mustang that did the same thing it was really hot in the summertime sometimes it would feel like your foot would melt to the pedal when driving it... I have a 52 Chevy 1 ton truck right now it has a cow vent it’s honestly one of the coolest trucks driving that I’ve ever owned or any vehicle frankly it could be 100° outside as long as you’re moving with the cowl vent open all the other windows open it’s really comfortable in there. Doesn’t need ac. I was really disappointed in the interior space there isn’t any headroom in that car and like I said in the video I owned the Karman Ghia at one time and this feels smaller than that. It almost feels claustrophobic in that car I couldn’t imagine having two people in the car because when I was sitting at it it felt like that was all that could really comfortably fit.. The Karman Ghia when I had it I drove my wife in the passenger seat in my sign in the backseat and I didn’t have an issue like that.

@@What.its.like. The little vent windows don't open, I wish they did. Only the prototype 1800 had operable vent windows. As for head room, I'm six foot three. There is good headroom, I noticed the headliner in the car you were was detaching like the one in mine. Once that happens you feel it on the top of your head like you did. As for passengers, I have had my car since 1984 and had many people in the front seat over the years. It can feel cramped at times but I never really noticed or felt bothered by it. Volvo people are too keen on the automatics stuck in cars of that era, they often call the Borg Warner type 35 a 'slush box' Having driven a 122 with one, yeah, it's. power suck. Combine that with A/C and you got a real dog of an 1800. Mine has the 4 speed with electric operated overdrive and I got over 30 MPG on the freeway. Good on gas and you can pedal mash when needed because the engine is not going get away from you and get all sideways. I have a $600 used B20 engine I put in in 1984 its old and a bit tired but still driving, I need to start it today actually. Is it a sexy engine? No, but properly cared for will last many decades. My car is a bit odd, it has the layer 3 spoke wheel but the seat belts are dated December 67. I got it used of course so I don't know too much about it before '84. It has yellow on blue California plates which came after '68 it should have yellow on black plates so I think it was from out of state.

I would also say "against it" - No glove box and no spare tire. - weird that there would not be a spare tire, but only a rim...that can't be right. Why would Sweden not provide a tire?

I might make a video of the five most overrated brands in my opinion I just wanted to make sure that everybody was on the same page and I wasn’t gonna lose anybody over it.. I honestly think Mercedes-Benz is at the top of the heap followed by BMW is a really really close second. But that’s just my opinion I think that those two brands are over priced piles of junk. Great choice in the alpha Romeo I have to see if I can find one to review this year

@@What.its.like. All the German cars have gone downhill over the last two decades. They have entered Chinese production. Many are now scrapped early because they can't be made reliable. The parts are worth more than the car. German prices and repair were always high but its much worse now. They used to make simple, well executed designs, now they compete to see who can put the most useless electronics in them. They have of course always been sold on snob appeal. Its now recommended that any high price car be leased so the lessor bears the repair costs. A new transmission on an Aston Martin is $100,000, and you will need one.
