The U7E was sold in other markets for a longer period but didn’t strike a chord here in the States. It was as you said very reliable and presented as a deluxe model in competition with the C70 Honda with its 12volt electrics and push button starting. The front park light behind the front rack was something rare even in the Japanese domestic market. A cool feature you may have missed is the oil tank level light under the seat. Press the button there and it illuminates the Autolube oil tank gauge. The color was called Mandarin Orange and was shared in 1971 and 1972 in good company with the R5, DT1E, DT1MX, JT2, AT2 and AT2MX. About 4500 we’re sold in the US and they pop up from time to time and mostly in good shape and running condition. The Yamaha 2-stroke step-thru series carried on into the 90s in Japan and other Asian markets with the V50, V75, V80 and V90 all in similar bodywork to the U7E and very popular. In the 90s Yamaha brought out the 4-stroke shaft drive Townmate series.
