Hi, Lou! Yep, uniquely styled for sure! Nothing else in all of history looked anything like the Gremlin, and it was even more unique in the Levi's trim! If you had to travel economy class back in the Seventies, this was probably the coolest way to do it! AMC was no stranger to theme cars. In 1967, AMC conjured up a trio of limited edition Rambler Rebel Regional wagons: Briarcliff, Westerner and Mariner, each with special woodgraining to depict regional themes. There was also the 1972-73 Gucci Hornet Sportabout and the 1973 Pierre Cardin Javelin that you saw in the original brochure, as well as the Barcelona Matador coupes and sedans of 1978. Pete has done a magnificent job of keeping this car looking like new, even underneath! It's got, well, everything but the girl! LOL! As Neil Diamond would say, "Forever in blue jeans"! Lou, you always have interesting virtual rides to take us on, and I will be eagerly awaiting your next one!

No matter what your preference on car makes, this car is a good example of how you can truly appreciate all the cars made by all the American Manufacturers. Sometimes they got it wrong and sometimes they got it right and the Gremlin hit the right time. I believe AMC was probably the least understood as compared to the big three. Over the years I have learned so much about AMC that I did not know at the time and have learned to appreciate them in many ways. Very nice car! Thanks to the owner and to Lou for providing such a wide variety of cars.

Excellent that AMC were really 'out there' with car design and interior packages that made a real standout car in the Gremlin. I can't imagine the other 'Big Three' being quite so adventurous in their car designs, notwithstanding that the early 70's was the end of the hippy era when contemporary design in all different things went wild for a few years. All credit to Pete for all the work in restoring this wonderful piece of automotive Americana.

I love these AMC Gremlins! While I wouldn’t buy one as a classic car to drive, I do appreciate these. My neighbors across the street ‘back in the day’ also had a Gremiln X with the Levi’s interior packages. However, their Gremlin X had the actual ‘X’ in place of the horizontal stripes on this particular car. I have no idea what the engine size or gearbox consisted of, but it was bright red with white striping. Nice presentation Lou....thanks again!

Oh Lou I am so jealous of this owner! I have wanted one of these from the time they first came out. I was too young to drive then and was not old enough to buy one but this was the dream car I wanted as a kid and still would love to have one. I wish I could have ordered one to my perfection cause mine would have been a true Steve Gremlin. I wanted the bright red with the white stripes and of course the 304 c.u. 8 cylinder engine with every option I could get even the sunroof option. I forget what AMC called there sunroof but it like folded back when open. I love this mans car!!!! He has it done up so well as it was off the assembly line. A true Gremlin owner after my heart. I did notice his a/c was not hooked up but I sure can see how he won that trophy! I was shocked that the a/c was not working with all he had done to the vehicle but hey I still loved it so much!!!! Just a outstanding vehicle the Levis edition was so cool and I loved the trunk and treats. I really enjoyed the ride along that was way too cool! Those straight sixes the 232 c.u.and the 258 c.u engines were very very good motors! Just like the 225 c.u. slant six Chrysler used were not powerhouses off the line but once you got them rolling they had plenty of power. Just a super super car this is and the owner is sure awesome too. I am so glad you found this Lou and shared it with us. I am so jealous!!! Lol!!! Thanks as always for sharing this Lou!

I smile every time I see a Gremlin. Right before the gas crisis in the 1970s I bought a 73 Gremlin. Mine had the same engine and transmission but wasn't the Levi addition. They were regularly panned by everyone but I think they were better cars than the Chevy Vega and Ford Pinto they competed with. I got better than 20 MPG and with the 27gallon tank had a cruising range of over 500 miles. Just what was needed when I lived more than 15 miles from work. Vegas and Pintos got better mileage but had much smaller tanks.

My first new car I bought it in September of 73. Mine was red without the X package just the 2 narrow gold stripes. It had the upgraded interior with carpet and the package tray under the dash. What drew me to it was the 304 v8. I was driving a VW and wanted something with more power. While by today's standards it was no hot rod it surprised a lot of people back then. I burned off the skinny Firestone Supremes in a hurry and got a set of slotted American racing mags from a friend who had them on a Plymouth. I had to put air shocks on the back so the wide tires wouldn't rub. There were no decals on it with the engine displacement so people didn't know what was under the hood. One of the cars I wish I still had. Thanks for the video I really enjoyed it.

AMC was struggling for market share in those days. They were loved by few but I am one of those few. The 258 six is as tough as a box of rocks! Seven main bearings. Goofy looking little cars that were so cool. The Levi’s interior was so creative. Underrated cars that just couldn’t compete as the imports were flooding the market. BTW that “young lady” is now an “old lady” and you probably wouldn’t want her to come with the car!

Nice car ! i'm a fan. another boring story ;) I did yard work for a few homes where i grew up on a regular basis when i was a kid in the early '70s. One client had a Silver grey Gremlin i'd wash and wax twice a year. Always dug the car but never drove it. You never see these now so this installment is a treat.

Very nice restoration. Being the owner of 4 1973 AMC Gremlin X's, I like to keep mine all original because being all original and in great shape, they will always "outshow" the Best of the Show. Major differences that would make this Gremlin more like original - 1). Original tires on these cars were D70X14 Goodyear raised white letter bias belted polyglas tires (Not E70x14), 2). The "rear" was black and not painted red, 3). The valve cover and engine block were AMC blue green in color and not red, 4). The voltage regulator was Delco and black and not an aftermarket, 5) As you pointed out the battery was not Interstate. Despite, this is a nice car and close to original but not "that close."

With all due respect to your interesting input on the specs, it was mentioned that this was a California car which would mean that the the red paint on the engine would be correct vs. the standard AMC Teal color.

I remember when these came out. They were actually pretty popular. That was in a time when gas was actually getting scarce to buy and people were looking for an economical car. This was one. It seems rather chinsey but today's standards but back in the day people were happy with a car that was reliable and easy on gas. The hot rod era was coming to an end. My Mom had one of these and I don't remember her having much trouble with it. So simple even I could work on it.

SWEET!! My first car was also an X - a '74 in the same color, but the stripe was a white hockey stick. Not a Levi's, but had 2-tone bucket seats and dealer installed American Air. Your earlier model has the nicer recessed bumpers. Hated that car (had been wrecked, was full of bondo, and had a grill like yours on it which was incorrect for '74), but strangely now I miss it and would like to find/build a duplicate.

I like your cinema verite. I remember looking at the Levi car at Al Rosen's AMC Momouth Street in Newport, Kentucky. Al was the one showing to us. Mom hated it, I thought it was the best. Everyone made fun of the design but VW and Honda produced their own versions with the Rabbit and the Civic. Most SUVs have the same shape as the Gremlin. Thank for the video. I made joke with cinema verite but I do like the casualness of it. It's like a friend sharing a video.

They can kid all they want, but the Levi's interior option was a clever idea and very popular. Added to the interiors done for AMC by Cassini, Cardin, and Gucci; it was a good fit for their least expensive car. For a company that produced about as many cars each week as Chevrolet produced each hour; the guys and gals at AMC did well.
