Sheesh these vettes were new to me late 60s. To early 80s. Drove to Montreal NY thruway Aug 1969 in cousins 68 vette leaked like a sieve but other horro was. You guessed it. Caught in 6. Hour TRAFFIC JAM ON TRUWAY. DUE TO......WOODSTOCK FESTIVAL!!!

Only having 4 gears is going to get old. You have a 1 piece main seal engine now and so you have options. One modification that would be nice is swapping in the ZF-6 speed from a C4 which coincidently may work with your flywheel and clutch setup, I'm just not sure about the clutch disc, the rest is good to go. You would need to retrofit the hydraulic clutch linkage and the transmission mount is a bit wonky but you could design your own parts and do a real low budget swap. I have personally done this in a '75 Vega. I used the Hurst short shifter and the knob was about in the same place the stock 4 speed was in. You get the bonus of the overdrive gears and you can put in some better rear gears for increaseed traction. Plus you can drive at higher freeway speeds and get good gas milage. LT-1 6 speed transmissions are still plentiful I see them on facebook marketplace here in Texas all the time. I think you should seriously consider this next.

Holes in the transmission tunnel are the same regardless of transmission. Just the rubber grommet is a little different

Why was there so much space between the rear tire and rear fender well when you got it off the lift to back out?

Pretty common when the car has been in the air and the suspension has been unloaded. It’ll settle back down in a few rotations
