1973 Ironhead Top End Rebuild & First Ride

Rebuilding and Riding my 1973 Harley Davidson Ironhead sportster for the first time.
I lost a lot of footage for this series due to multiple computer crashes, so put together what I had to make this quick video.

@@RoadsOfOz I’ve had this bike for a couple of years now and there hasn’t been enough trouble free rides for me to want to even consider a trip. But I think/hope she’s at that point now haha

I love the old Ironheads, started on one. The AMF years were notoriously bad for QC and H-D in general. Well done Gentleman. BTW, when starting an Ironhead it’s best to kick 3 times with the ignition off to Prime it then turn the ignition on and they usually start on 1 or 2 kicks. Great choice of music too!

@@EasyDoesitmotoah. The rocker boxes are near identical. I forgot that the bigger Harley’s had alloy heads and the sporty still used cast iron.

@@whatsstefon yeah the rocker boxes do look quite similar, the way I tell the difference at a glance is the push rods. The Ironheads have 4 cams so the push rods come up at a straight angle, where the shovel heads start tighter at the bottom end and fan out towards the head. Also these are a unit construction where the shovels and all the big twins are pre unit

@@EasyDoesitmoto yeah, the sporty engine has generally always been quad cam. Where as the bigger HD motors have been single or twin cam.

Nice, classic look Ironhead. That rear brake is worthless and should not be considered the single source of stopping power.
