I bought an 83 FLHT in worse shape than that one a few yrs ago from a guy cheap. It’s was beat and ugly, but I wanted the shovelhead drivetrain for another project. I planned on selling off the roller and title to get some money back, no offers. Yrs later the wife asked, will an EVO motor fit in there? Yup, it’ll bolt right in. “ why don’t you build it back with an EVO for us to ride together?” She rides her own custom 82 FXR we built. So over a few yrs I redid the old bike. 107”S&S motor from a Big Dog, converted to belt rear drive, upgraded brakes, 6spd OD gear set, tons of other upgrades but used as much of the original bike as possible. Today it’s a smooth as glass two up tourer. The 107, recammed for low and mid range is smooth and strong and the old FLT frame is a joy to cruise on. It was a long process but it’s a hobby, so saving the old iron is a labor of love. Those ugly old FLTs are some smooth bikes on the hiway.

I stopped riding when I was 25, rode ninjas etc... at 38 I gave in and bought an old harley Road King. Feel like I been missing a part of me and found it

I love it! Why buy a new Harley for at least 40,000 when you can rebuild something like this and make her your own. That bike will truly be part of you. I have rebuilt many bikes. But not an entire rebuild like you are doing. I am a bit jealous and need a new project. Best of luck to you with this old girl. She is a beauty!

@@WillyTheScotchMan thank you! 🙏 I am with you, even in the middle of projects I’ll see something and be like hmm that’ll make for a good project 🤣

Sitting is way harder on a bike than riding it, nice project brother you’ll be looking for another one before you know it. 🐾✌️🇺🇸

Agree with @michaelerickson1518. Don't do the top end unless there's clear evidence there's a failure. I don't even know why you'd mess with the chain?

Comments like this have me rethinking my plans, the main goal is to have it roadworthy enough to travel reliably anywhere in this country, I will let that goal guide my decisions

@tta850 it's a pain changing out a belt, impossible alongside the road. I'd keep the chain more maintenance, but you don't have to take your primary apart to change when it breaks, and it will break. The belt is my least favorite thing on my 83 FXSB!

Nice to see NYC neighborhoods from a helmet cam (and not from someone going stupid fast on a Japanese bike). Good job getting it going. My 93 Glide Ultra is coming along and almost road worthy. Following your journey!

Amazing man ! I'd love to fix one up, I got my first bike about 2 months ago in rough condition and I've done a good amount of work to it to get it running smooth. Great Video !!!
