Most modern day vehicles have a key way or centering position on the shaft, it’s easy to remove a steering wheel with an airbag. The airbag is not the problem.

On the E-types and XJs etc you should centralize the rack first before any adjustments. On the steering rack there is a grease nipple on the adjusting pad. Remove the nipple and use a pin the same size and push it in the hole. Move the steering rack left and right and the pin will line up with a purpose hole in the rack. The rack is now centralised. Leave the pin in place. Line up the front wheels with the back wheels then set your toe in. Remove pin.

Beautiful cars!! The word "iconic" is used very freely nowadays but the E-type has to be classed as a truly iconic car. Funny that probably the most famous quote about the E-type came from a Ferrari guy, rather than someone from Jaguar. I do think Enzo was right though.

I had a 1978 MGB, I bought new, that developed a similar problem after being aligned. The selling dealer told me the problem “couldn’t be corrected” when in fact, he just didn’t know (or bother to find out) how to fix it. I took it to an independent suspension shop and they WERE able to fix it correctly.
@thomasmiller16503 жыл бұрын
I had two brand new MGBs during the 1960s and both had the steering wheel a little off center.

I can't say about rack and pinion setups, but most older american cars with recirculating ball gears have keyed steering wheels, so you have to set the steering wheel by centering the tie rods...although i have seen steering wheels jammed on and stripped out the keyway.

Nice easy fix, but male sure you refit the nut and locking nut before you test drive it. I like the V12 out of the Jaguar range. I had a Daimler V12 very nice car and no slouch really. Jsut been watching Richard Michael Owen putting an old Jag back together after rerpainting.

So all of the Series III E types had the longer 2+2 chassis ? Ever seen / driven a US one with the 4.2 straight 6 ?
@hughbishopnh3 жыл бұрын
But on a series 2 it's a different procedure. 3 grub screws to get the center boss off. Which is not the horn button as that is on the indicator stalk. Why did they change? Then just as you demonstrated. Good point about the Series 3 not being a sports car. In your auto with A/C you are looking for comfortable touring. Thanks for the video, a bit different from the Sprites.

@robertturner66513 жыл бұрын
Some cars i.e. GM are clocked so that you can only mount the steering wheel in one way. So to set straightness on the wheel may need suspension manipulation
@johndavey723 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve . I didn't think you had an "e" type , so was this for a customer ? I had a XJS V12 and l called mine the elastic band . As you pointed out the power is relentless and turbine smooth. And well done ! An "e"type not "XKE".... I've said it before l'm sure you have British blood in you lineage somewhere ! The series 1 2+2 was the first auto way back in 1966 !

@@ThisWeekWithCars In the USA probably, I guess. But as far as I know in Europe that's the norm. I don't think Ferrari sold in Europe many V12 cars, in that time, with an auto gearbox. They were known for their marvelous manual gearbox, with a beautifully crafted H pattern plate.

Steve 's not quite correct . The first "e"type available in Automatic was the series 1 2+2 introduced in 1966 specifically to meet the demands of the North American market. I don't think the standard wheelbase could take an automatic . From 1971 when the series 3 was introduced either box was available .
