I was not expecting for the 1973 items to look that edible (and actually be edible, makes me wish I could have a nibble through the screen). I do love rations that come into a tin or some sort of container, you retain a piece of memorabilia after all these years even when the food doesn't make it. Very cool items these were for their time!

2:02 an excellent example as to the potential benefit of including a pair of (the relatively new) straight cut, ambidextrous tin snips. Quality pair are made by Milwaukee and Crescent, among others. In many cases being able to furnish each survivor with their own quasi disposable mess tin has definite advantages but given that there might be more rations than survivors a ton of useful gadgetry can be fabricated from the soft metal and decent snips. Dick Prenocke’s use of surplus Jerry cans when building his Alaskan cabin comes immediately to mind.

Here’s a fun mind challenge that probably(hopefully ) has near zero applicability. Nonetheless it’s a great visualization exercise for those of us who’ve built a hundred kits in our lifetimes. Building a comprehensive survival kit that can be brought through TSA. The probability is astronomical but when flying over large bodies of water and/or large swaths of desolate land mass (Kimberly, Australia, the Amazon et al) it’s always a good idea to fashion your carry on with a bit of survival in mind. Knives cannot be brought aboard US flights but materials that can be honed into a knife certainly can. Think more like extra Rx medicine, a quality wool sweater and waterproof wind breaker. A beanie or Touk. A single wall steel bottle. Safety glasses. Ferro rod. Nail clippers. Duct tape. Cordage. Small metal file. Pliers. Trauma/first aid. Extra cell phone battery. Head lamp. Repair kit. 100 proof vodka has thousands of uses and can be transported in pump hairspray bottles. Peroxide bottles. Mouthwash. Vape cartridges of THC oil. Not so much for impromptu partying but for pain relief and keeping other’s’ anxiety in check. If you choose a 15 to 20L small knapsack you can put it on under your jacket and deplane wearing it without raising the ire of flight attendants and Karen’s. Same goes for cruise ships. If ever on board a cruise ship when the muster station klaxon sounds it is almost always a smart idea to take the stairs first to your cabin and change into the most adventurous, warm, layered clothing that you have, proper shoes and don the ditch bag as described above. Both cruise ship and airline personnel will affirm that passengers are mandated to leave ALL carry on’s/luggage behind. I choose to ignore this rule because my life and well being means more to me than corporate policies. To be fair, as an advanced preparedness minded individual, I typically choose to avoid both means of travel. Particularly flying. But there are times when you’ve got to fly. Those who live in metro regions or even within a tank of gas of one struggle to wrap our heads around how ginormous certain areas of nearly unmapped land really are. There is an excellent, must-see documentary on Netflix right now about four small children lost in the Amazon after a plane crash. The documentary is titled “The Lost Children.” The event happened last year. It reinforces how life can be chopped into absolute confetti with zero warning and how life and death survival can hit at almost any time. PS: people always forget the grueling debilitating pain of severe caffeine withdrawal headaches. The last thing you need when facing a survival crisis. 300 green tea extract tablets cost $30 on Amazon. A single tablet carries the same caffeine as 2.5 cups of coffee. But without the jitters or other typical caffeine overdose symptoms
