No, I use the 9.9 on boats we get furnished with cabin we rent in Wisconsin. This resort only has short transom boats so that’s why I need to change my motor over. It’s our resort of choice for now.

Hi, I have been watching your vids and enjoying them. One important thing to watch is the wave washer under the flat screw holding your points on. I noticed when you took the screw out, the wave washer was still stuck to the old points, not still under the screw. When you put the screw back into the new .points, the washer was not under the screw. The washer is designed to hold the points fast, but still allow you to adjust them fully tightened via the turn screw below. Try it next time, easier and more accurate than tightening the screw while holding the feeler guage. Keep up the good work, it is satisfying bringing these great motors back to life again.

To get rid of the aluminum oxide, get some phosphoric acid (painters metal prep) in a squirt bottle and spray it down and watch it foam. Rinse with water before it dries, gives you nice clean metal ready for paint or on our case a fine layer of oil and munge.

My dad has the same engine, Maybe closer to the 1980's but similar. rebuilt like 20 years ago. But it runs rough. It definitely needs work done to it but he just reckons its fine. @Michaelsbackyardmarina3 жыл бұрын
If it has good compression then check the points. Make sure they are clean and gapped properly. After that and it still runs a little tough then the carb could use a good cleaning.

Hey looking for some help here! Hopefully you read this or someone with knowledge does. Me and my friend recently bought a Evinrude 25hp 360cc sportster. Basically the same motor. It has spark fuel and compression. We tried setting the ignition and breaker points but now it just backfires and has only started once and it ran for 5sec before going back to backfiring constantly when pulling the starter wire. Could it have to do with the ignition being set in the wrong way? Or bad breakerpoints or condenser?

If the outside of the cylinder is smooth, it has a water jacket. If it's finned like a weed eater than it's air cooled. Guessing you are probably the later. The three horse motors were water cooled twin cylinder.

@brian480263 жыл бұрын
Great video! I just picked up a 1976 Evinrude 25 HP and will be doing a lot of these same checks and improvements. Two silly questions if you don't mind: When you're checking both the compression and the spark you're just using a drill to move the flywheel continuously for a few seconds? Also, my '76 is equipped with an electric start but the female side of the plug is pulverized and non existent for it (similar to your Evinrude you show towards the end of the video) so I'm planning on just pull starting it. The issue will be turning her off since there is no kill switch. If I wanted to add a manual kill switch to do I put it to the ignition coil (negative side?) and ground or do I need to take that flywheel off and connect it to the points?
@Michaelsbackyardmarina3 жыл бұрын
Just run your current wire from your electric start switch to a manual kill switch. Yes just roll the engine over a few times to check compression and spark.
@brian480263 жыл бұрын
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina I did the compression check, both cylinders over 100 at about 105, thanks for the advice there. As a follow up related to the switch / wiring, my motor is all wired internally with the plug connection still in tact and all wires connected on the motor side, but there is no external plug and also no ignition switch, choke, etc. I can't find an external plug / wiring harness anywhere online except for nymarine.ca who want $425.00! If I'm just looking to pull start but need a way too kill the motor should I just remove that internal plug and then tap into the wires just like you have for a kill switch? A real dumb question here, I don't need a battery hooked up for the kill switch to work, right?
@s.v.gadder14433 жыл бұрын
There are two plugs right after the wires come out of the timing plate, before the wire run back to the coils. Connect your kill switch to them and ground......
