Had a few of those 70s greenish Johnson 50 hp, simply made and easy to work on. Thanks for showing the demolition process, reminding me of my younger times....I see you grinded the sucket tips...

That's the only way to get shallow wall sockets anymore; I bought a set, and they were thicker than my standard set! Quite annoying. But actually, that black socket is natural grinding from 10 years of use (and counting)

No so easy for me man this cauling had been a b-i-t-c-h to take off,

I have two Johnson’s 50 hps, one from late 70s with steering cable tube on it but brew piston rings. The other one is early 70s with no tilt tube to insert steering cable. I’m thinking to take the head of the older one since it runs and mount it on the lower of the broken one and be able to use my current steering setup. Both long shaft I’m hoping it fits. I just need to fix gaskets and it’s game time!
@BrandonsGarage3 жыл бұрын
The engine without the steering tube is probably an electric shift engine; other than some hardware, not much with interchange between the two engines.
@lmt-adventures3 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonsGarage oh no! I haven’t gotten deep into that one but it’s electric shift then I’m doomed as I have never ever seen those haha.
@lmt-adventures3 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonsGarage Brandon, you were right. Took the lower off and discovered it is an electric shift or hydro electric shift (I don’t know which is which) but thing stays in forward gear when no electric current supply to coils. Tested coils and one is bad so I’m either replacing it up throwing it on the boat military style “only forward” haha!

Is this the only way to access the lower screws on the exhaust cover?
@kevinf23874 жыл бұрын
Just in the middle of converting a 79 55hp long shaft to a short using a parts engine (75, 50hp) I bought. The long shaft had a bad ring and opinion. Short shaft came with power tilt as an added bonus.. will have to check the driveshafts

Hey Brandon, how do you remove the exhaust housing adapter? My father and I want to replace the adapter housing gasket just below the powerhead mount gasket?

Im about to crack open my 72 50hp Evinrude. I cooked it last season and im hoping i can throw new rings and a head gasket in there and get it running. Is it necessary to remove the flywheel to remove the powerhead?

What is that wire going into the exhaust cover in the center of what looks like a X?

Hi Brad I have a 84 ‘ 50 hp Johnson the lower unit needs a resealing and probably replacement parts ... which of your videos would be closest to my unit to get a good idea what I’m dealing with?

Hi there I've done some research with little luck. My 1975 50hp over heated. Top cylinder 60 PSI bottom 10 PSI. I clearly need new rings just not sure the best way to go about getting the pistons out. Can I Access through the exhaust cover? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
You'll probably need more than rings, the cylinder is probably pretty scored. You need to remove the powerhead, and open the crankcase halves. Watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKvMYqSIaKlna9E About 15 minutes in, the pistons removal process starts.

@@BrandonsGarage Thank you I'll take a look. When I popped the head cover off last night everything looked surprising clean inside. I'll do a more thorough investigation tonight.

Thanks for your videos, I bought a Johnson AD-10 7.5hp 1956 I think. It was locked up. I got it unstuck, but I think the cylinders should be bored and new Pistons I stalled, due to rust pitting in one of the cylinders. I haven't found pistons for it. Do you know where I could find Pistons, and rods for it? Or should I give up and find another engine instead of this one?
@BrandonsGarage6 жыл бұрын
Probably easiest and cheapest to just get a good powerhead off ebay

Hi Brandon, new on your channel and wondered if you have removed a powerhead off a 60hp mercury 2 stroke? Thanks Tim
@BrandonsGarage6 жыл бұрын
I have a 60 and a 75 Merc I plan to make a video about. But, Mercs are a whole different world. I have tooling and literature covering 40 years of OMC's. Only a handful for Merc.
@TimsWorkshopTJY6 жыл бұрын
Yes, mercury is a different motor for sure. Look forward to seeing a video on it. Older mercs need a tap and die set with helicoil inserts. Haha

Really appreciate your vids, i recently acquired a 1977 v4 140hp with a dead cylinder and have managed to get it apart without getting lost using your videos. however i need a piston and rings and the pistons are the type with a tapered upper piston ring, and i cant find a replacement for the life of me, all i can find is oversized and 3 piston ring type. Any ideas? maybe you got one i can buy from you?

Now I just watched two of your videos removing powerhead from transom, and all bolts came off easy? I have done this on maybe 15 outboards (40/50/60hp omc). Only one time all bolts came off without breakoff. Guess it is because of the salty water here in sweden.. If Lucky, only one breaks, and powerhead can be wiggled a couple of thousand times to brake the damn bolt off, but most commonly two breaks, and always one on each side - then the fun begins...any tips or tricks would be appreciated.. Maybe you already have some video with this kind of problem, i will look around..
@BrandonsGarage6 жыл бұрын
None. Rarely will I have just 1 or 2 break. Usually is all or nothing for me. At that point I don't care anymore.
