I do you have one question. if the previous owner had the timing way out of whack. I feel like I couldn’t hurt anything to put it back to the correct parameters? Because I know I’m not gonna get a test prop. Your thoughts?

Mine looked like that. A little honing and it was fine. All of the screws came out that hold the reeds in. Light scratches in the cylinder walls. The top of #2 piston and head was damaged. The bearings in #2 cylinder were gone.

VRO baby! its not a matter if its going to happen....but when its gonna happen. i am an absolute Johnson fan, i have more then a few, but VRO is top cilinder killer if you have an VRO fitted outboard, take it of and mix ur own fuel.

I have a 1984 Evanrude Super40. I believe it is identical to the 84 Norsemen. Sold to another part of the world and name something different. Is it possible to take a electric start system from a 84 Evan rude and adapted over to the 84 super40. My problem is that you damn near have to be the Incredible Hulk to pull start this motor and if you're not paying attention it will pull you right back into it. So I'm hope is that I can take the electric start setup off of the 84 Evinrude 40 and it will fit onto the 1984 Evan rude super 40. Thankyou. 🙏🙏

My 91 Johnson 50 two cylinder is running 105PSI in both cylinders. It looks like other Johnson 2 stroke 50s from the 1980s to 2000s are running as high as 140-150psi. In the past I’ve increased compression of 2 stroke small engines by replacing rings only, but I’ve never worked on a larger engine. Do I have reasonable chances of increasing compression if I do rings only and don’t hone the head or replace pistons?

Helpful teardown...but the bearing failure was not the cause of the failure...what do you think caused the bearing failure? hours? VRO (you did not inspect it)? I just got an 88 40 HP Evinrude and I am removing VRO, to replace with just fuel pump and use premix.
@teamdougherty
@teamdougherty 5 жыл бұрын
Why would you think this was a VRO failure? A VRO failure would not just affect one bearing.
@wg7644
@wg7644 4 жыл бұрын
@@teamdougherty Could it be a the VRO pump failure something obstructed the mix getting to the top cylinder meanwhile the bottom cylinder kept moving along until the top cylinder lost all lubrication?
@teamdougherty
@teamdougherty 4 жыл бұрын
@@wg7644 The VRO takes oil from the oil tank and fuel from the fuel tank using separate feed lines and separate parts of the pump. Once passed the pump the fuel and oil mixture the pass through the carburetor(s) then the engine crank case to lubricate the bearings and the bottom on the cylinder walls. After that it is routed to the combustion chamber to lubricate the top of the cylinder then ignited to provide power. If the VRO failed it would affect the whole engine at the same time. Maybe if a carb failed and didn't provide fuel to the cylinder behind it that bearing would fail. But a VRO failure cannot affect one cylinder.

@@teamdougherty with respect friend, this .is a classic example. Yes it is possible all cylinders die at the same time but more than half of the roughly 9000 engines my shops have rebuilt from vro failures look exactly like this.

All that crystalization on top piston = water in the head, possible origin, bad head gasket?

its not crystalzation friend, its chunks of bearings and aluminum from piston

I’m working on a E40hp. Took a drift and hammer to get the wrist pins out. And same to get back in (on my practice piston from donor motor). I’ve seen some piston assembly but not on the 40. Do these wrist pins need to be pressed in/out or should they just slide into place? I don’t know if you got that deep in a rebuild or not.
@BrandonsGarage
@BrandonsGarage 3 жыл бұрын
They have a piston cradle, and a pressing pin to press them in. With that said, Ive seen them so tight a hammer is required, other times you can push them out with your finger.

Do I need to pull the power head to replace the upper motor mount? I’m working on a 89 50hp that is having shifting issues due to worn out motor mounts.
@antfarmmining7824
@antfarmmining7824 3 жыл бұрын
That motor ate those screws that are missing out of the silencer housing, when the piston smashed the screws into the head it cracked the piston skirt and the chunks got in the bearings and ate them up .
@daddski1
@daddski1 2 жыл бұрын
vro killed this engine friend. That is why the crnk /rod bearings are melted and fused. The heat from this happening is why the upper is discollored. No way that crank is any good, nor the rod. In my now 52 years of marine engine repair my shops have rebuilt thousands of vro and oil injection engines. Every one of them look just like this one on at least one cyl. Also friend your scenario would have the lower cyl killed in a much different way

@@BrandonsGarage thanks for info! You've helped me a lot with the breakdown an seized piston (amazing barrel wasn't damaged more-I would think I'd use that head again) I watched your timing VCR video an found a problem with our motors there to: timing requires special "Timing Prop" which are Not available (like you say, no one wants to sale their needed timing tool) So we need a duplicate to replace the impossible to find time prop! My timing light is an "Advancing" light with a dial to check timing advancing working, maybe this can help me!?
