I didn't even know a Montego GT existed. I don''t normally like yellow for a car color, but that's a nice yellow. Great find! Thanks, Lou!

I had 1975 Mercury Cougar XR7 with that identical gauge cluster and dash design with the same buckets except it had the automatic floor shifter with console. Leather Interior was dark red with power windows, Philco Ford 4 speaker AM FM Stereo with factory 8 Track full power with the Cleaveland 351 2V V8. Miss that boat. She was a smooth cushy classy highway cruiser that floated along that never felt any bumps.

Went down the KZbin rabbit hole on the Montego GT. Great video! I bought my 1973 Montego GT when I was stationed overseas (London) in the USN. Wimbledon White with black bucket seats and the factory Hurst 4 on the floor. 351-CJ engine. Drove it until 1985 and put it in the barn. It is still there. 135,000 miles and the engine ran great. But the body was just starting to go so I stopped driving it. I really should get the old girl restored and have fun with it. I just turned 80 - so too old to work on it myself. Here in Maine there's very few if any shops that will take on a full frame off restoration. So she sits.

@@loucostabile Lou, it's not that I don't want to get the car back on the road. But there isn't anywhere to get the work done here in Maine that has a decent reputation. I'll have another go and start looking for a reputable place to do the work. It's been 10,15 years since I last tried to find a quality shop. Wish me luck! Jerry Williams

Absolutely ❤❤❤ this car! It has the highly coveted GT hood with the scoops that so many restorers of the Torino/Montego/Cougar/Elite fans from the mid '70's desire. I bought a '76 Cougar new when I was a senior in high school with a 351 W. Black with white half top and white interior and the same full gauge dash. Best dash layout of any car I have ever owned. My first upgrade was ditch the single exhaust for the dual's with turbo flow mufflers. Sounded almost the same as this one...all be it with less lug and OOMPH. But still an unbelievable cruiser and road trip car. Wish I still had it. My wife needs to win the lottery so I can re-create my Baby! These mid '70's Ford and Mercury 'personal luxury cars' are very under appreciated in my opinion but seem to be gaining in popularity lately. Thank you Lou and Steve SO MUCH for sharing this one!! BTW, with Jeff Gluck's recent departure from Patreon I am now able to become a proud supporter.

I remember as a kid watching the Lincoln-Mercury commercials with the cougar growling from atop the L-M sign, and I remember seeing a pretty good number of these Montegos around, but I can't say I recall ever seeing a fastback Montego back then. In fact, I don't think I was even aware they existed until I was well into adulthood. It's so ironic, here is this sleek, sporty attention-getting car that few people know about. But I'm sure glad Mercury did make them, however rare, and it's pretty exciting to see this one on display. BTW, you should meet the president of the International Station Wagon Club, which I belong to (and from which I drew my username, 27 is my membership number). He has an excellent 1974 Montego MX Villager in Bright Red. Yes, sir, "The sign of the cat" was a great place to be in the '70s!

Every time I see a 73 GT i kick myself in the ass ! Back in 1984 I was driving past a farm house in lower Michigan and spotted what appeared to be a fastback Torino sitting behind a garage surrounded by tall weeds. After a couple of weeks I passed by again and I saw the owner mowing his yard and I stopped and asked him about the Torino. He was very nice and said it was not a Torino but an old mercury his son had bought back in the mid 70s and parked it back there when the clutch burned up. Being a gearhead the thought went through my mind and I asked him you mean it is manual shift and he said yes it had a factory four speed and a real big engine . I asked him can I have a look and he said yes and we walked back there through the tall grass and I saw a bright red fast back with mach 1 scoops and fell in love . It was a little rusty around the bottom of the fender front and rear but that did not phase me .he opened it up and the black interior was spotless .buckets and consoled 4 speed shifter . He opened the hood and that was the first time in my 18 years I played my eyes on a 429 big block ford . I was hooked I asked him if it was for sale and he told me he had to ask his son who was away living in Illinois a whole state away .I looked over the car for a hour with the father and talked about cars and hunting and fishing and whatever and I left giving him my parents phone number to reach me by. About a month passed by my mother told me a man called about some car I looked at and he wanted to know if I still wanted to buy it and I called the number he left and he told me his son said 600.00 and it's yours .This was a lot of money back in 84 and I only had saved up 275 in my savings .I explained to him I really want the car but it would be some time before I could come up with the full 600.00 . He said well when you get it it will still be here. At the time I was picking apples for a local farm that made me 150 a week if I put in 10 to 12 hours and every week I would add half of that to my savings and plus I was driving a Celica at that time on of my friends wanted long story short when I was 250 dollars short of the 600.00 I sold the Celica and bought the montego. Me and my cousin towed it home and my dad freaked out because I bought the car against his wishes but to me this was the coolest thing me and my friends ever layed eyes on .my neighbor saw the car a few days later and stopped to ask about it .He like the car and when he opened the hood he really liked even more.he asked me if it ran and I told him yes but the clutch was out of it. He asked me if I would sell it to him and I said no I want to fix it and drive it. Well a whole year passed by and I don't have to tell you although I tinkered with it I never got around to fix it and lost interest. I went to my neighbor and told him 600.00 and it's yours and he only had at the time 200.00 and a Suzuki dirt bike. Yep you already know I went for it what a dumb kid I was and to make matters worse my neighbor turned the montego in to a dirtrack race car after replacing the big block with a Windsor smallblock or something .the car was totally destroyed in two seasons of racing and sent to the crusher. It makes me sick today still to find out what I had and let it slip through my fingers. I saw one roll across the block on mecums for 28,000 with a 351 auto. Life has it's hard lessons that true.

@@loucostabile if only we could turn back the hands of time. Know what I mean ? I don't even want to tell anyone about the 1958 Chrysler Desoto I thought was a big ugly 4 door car and I turned it down because it was al rusted out real bad from salt use on winter roads and being parked several years in a muddy wet area . Another dumb move on my part and didn't realize the engine was something to become special in these times today . Yep it had a 392 hemi with push button trans and I could have had it for 150 dollars as is . Doh !...
