I'm prepping to cut the useless spare tire wheel well out of the back and replacing the tank with something far far larger. (1978 end of assembly line Cobra II Mustang) In 2014 i opted to replace the W shaped rear leaf springs (clearly wore, in fact they fell apart once all weight was completely let off the rear axle which really meant it wasn't safe to drive at all), with instead of a 4 leaf identical replacement, General Spring was offering a 5 leaf with a slightly slight stiffer but similar load capacity set of springs. The major difference was that the 5 leaf gives the mustang II a rather aggressive stance that REALLY suits the vehicle. It also allows for a set of 7" wide, 15" diameter rims with 295/50R15 tires to be mounted provided you remove the axle bumpers (which won't be necessary since you'll have such a great height that if you ever ended up needing them, chances are something is already destroyed haha). If the stance is a bit too high, replacing the shackles with 2 and a half inch or 2 inch instead of the stock 3 inch will drop the height noticably and closer to original without affecting anything poorly. I should note that the perfect replacement shocks that'll fit the car are Monroe shock designed for a toyota corrola from i believe a 1980 that has over extension bumpers built in which is perfect, just need to pull the top mounts off, install the shock and then cut the extra stud length off, the rest of it all just slides into place beautifully. So i think with the larger fuel tank being possible with the spare wheel well cut out, and fully plated over, combined with wanting to move the vehicle battery from the front to the back (a larger CCA battery suitable for down the road upgrades as well as providing good power for a reasonable audio system as well), the extra weight combined should keep the rear end better planted on the road and less HOP. Plus it also gives more room for a... hopefully, 351 4V 4 bolt main Cleveland out of a 72 Mach 1 to shoehorn into the engine bay without making any modifications to the frame or firewall or fenders.

My filler neck rusted and fell off. You have any suggestions for a replacement? I can't find one anywhere.

I have one however, someone cut it near the top where the gas go so it's about 95 % intact. Other than that, they are very hard to find.

Hey Terence, I’m new to car restoring and recently purchased a 76 Cobra II. Right now it is sitting on two flats. I’m thinking about upgrading to 15” rims. Have you messed with that? It looks like I’m going to have some clearance issues.

I have a video on my channel where I fit 17" wheels and tires on my 1976 Cobra II. I think I have covered 95 percent of the Mustang II on my channel with nearly 200 videos. So anything you can think about while restoring your car, I have went over it and it's on the channel. I literally have more info on the Mustang II then the entire internet.

You do realize this built on the Pinto frame and those gas tanks tend to catch fire when rear ended.

@@TerenceDIY I got rear ended in my 1976 Mustang when I was 16. It didnt expload, but I was hit so hard the seat broke and my head hit the back window. I was changing the radio station at the time and the knob still in my hand. But it did not expload.

@@jeniferdiamond7723 , I hate to hear that. I am glad that you are okay because things could have been much worse had it exploded. Once again, thank you SO much for watching.

you do realize that in the court of law that the lawsuit regarding the pinto fuel tank issue was proven to be equivalent or less so than many other cars that were catching fire during the same periods. Basically it was a myth that this was a widespread issue. Still the move to improve upon the tank and build shielding around it was made mandatory starting in 1976.... therefore any mustang II, pinto, etc that used the uni-body design, starting in roughly middle 76 onward are entirely safe. Early 76 models and earlier were in 1978 recalled for replacement and shielding to be installed. I've a 1973 Delta 88 Oldsmobile for example, that has the fuel tank in a worse position, and it's FAR far larger, it's also filled from behind the rear license plate, 20 gallon. Hit hard enough it too could explode with the right fuel to air mixture. Among several other chevy vehicle that shared similar design. Dodge also had a few of their own that shared similar placement and were susceptible to explosive results when rear ended.
