There is something special in that particular era. Something to remain and to be treasured in the next 500 years. I was not even born in 1974 but envy the eyewitnesses. Was brought on with the stories of my late father... Ajax and Bayern, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, Al Pacino and Robert de Niro, Cruiff and Beckenbauer. Well, also comrade Jivkov and comrade Brezhnev but luckily they are not important anymore and nobody should remember them. Great game of football from what I saw. IMO, players from 1974 are more technically skilled from these in our times and much more wholehearted and committed. Only the tactical aspects of the game are improved from then. And it is unfair to compare the physical side of football in 1974 and 2022. Great game that! Really impressed by Beckenbauer, Muller, Overath and Grabowski. Felt really sorry for Netherlands at the end, seemingly the most powerful and entertaining team of the tournament. Honorable mention to Mr. Taylor too. He had to make some very difficult calls and to handle some real characters and egos. Even without the modern technologies he did much better than the referees of the present. A man of certain presence and assurance.

18:24 "That's the way that little man gets them. That's the way he gets it". Lovely bit of commentary Muller's goal was awesome. One of the best ever in a WC Final. He takes a touch to let the ball run BEHIND him but then he twists and hooks it back across with enough power for it to find the corner. It's one of those goals that only he could score. That was his 14th goal overall in World Cups, breaking the Fontaine record.

11:17 - Vogts 14:02 - Hoeness 16:50 - Rep 24:57 - Bonhof 25:45 - off the (German) line 26:40 - van Hanegem 31:30 - Neeskens; that's a goal 9 out of 10 times. 32:38 - Rep 33:23 - Rep 35:40 - Neeskens Arie Haan was terrible in defense in this game, and Johnny Rep should have scored at least once. Germany was very smart in attacking the Dutch where it hurt the most; if Suurbier went forward they would immediately attack the position he left behind. Even though a Dutch player would take over that position (total football), that player wasn't necessarily as strong at that position. See the 13:50 attack, which exposes Haan. The first German goal 6:40 came from their first attack after an injury treatment for Rijsbergen (a knee problem; not shown on this tape). When Holzenbein receives the ball he goes straight for Rijsbergen, who can't turn fast anymore (what is Haan doing?). Check out this space on the right, explored by Grabowski 14:59. Germany remembered, and Bonhof, starting from his own half, sprinted into the same gap to set up the second goal 18:00. Once again, Haan is exposed, when Bonhof - not an attacker - blasts by him as if he's not there. Haan was normally a midfielder. so the conclusion has to be that Germany was too good for Holland to play in that formation; especially after the injury to Rijsbergen. Ajax had played with a much stronger defense when they sent Bayern Munich packing. In the second half Wim Jansen showed that he could easily have played in the center of defense. So if the Dutch wanted a midfielder there (the only time they did so was for this tournament), why not him instead of Haan? Because of Ajax v Bayern Munich, the German team was much more familiar with the Dutch players than the other opponents in this tournament. They knew Haan was a midfielder and called the bluff; time and again they were able to isolate him in defense; exposing him as slow in a sprint, too slow on the turn for a defender, and without the spatial awareness of a defender (the equalizer shows spatial awareness of a midfielder, where he's covering space behind him that has nothing to do with the situation). 7:46 shows van Hanegem picking up some dirt, just before the German pk. This was his habit; he would toss it at the ball just before the player kicks the pk. lol More van Hanegem at 21:05 halftime whistle with him kicking the ball just out of reach of the ref... who is really p*ssed off as a result. The situation would end up with a yellow card for .. Cruyff. This was a flat performance by Holland. Four days after a brutal encounter with Brazil, they looked tired and seemed to play the entire game in one gear. Their usual spark and explosiveness were missing. Earlier in the tournament the real Orange Clockwork gave a masterclass against Argentina: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pojIgmaKh52cgqM

Haan as great as he was as a midfield player (and the scorer of two wonderful goals in 78 W. Cup), he lacked the most critical factor in a defender which is timing and then executing your tackles. Haan was unable to tackle and Reinus Michele had to have a plan B for his central defense shortcomings. You can notice Haan is simply following Holzenbein and not trying to interfere with his advance movement. Instead he is concerned with Surbier's absence on right back, but the problem is, no German player is moving in that direction to take advantage of Surbier's absence in his position. 4 years later, he made the same mistake when Kempes ran inside the penalty box to score his 1-st goal in 78 final. You would expect any Dutch player in Haan's position to tackle; but instead of Haan, it is Kempes who executes a sliding tackle to score. Simply mind boggling. Haan's lack of tackling ability cost the Dutch 2 W. Cup finals.

Some time ago I read an article saying that the economical way in which "Ajax" won the European Cup final vs "Juventus" in 1973 (very early goal and then clinging to the minimal lead for 87 minutes or so) might have put the same idea in the ""Ajax"-based Dutch team after they took that equally early 1:0 lead versus West Germany in the World Cup final. When the Dutch woke up, the damage had already been done. I know it is practically impossible to prove such a claim (or to disprove it, for that matter) but it 's still intriguing to put it in the whole picture. As for the game ""Ajax" vs "Bayern" - the thrashing score in the first game has obscured the fact that for something like 50 minutes the German club was equal and created no fewer scoring chances than their Dutch opponent. Then it was Sepp Mayer's blunders that threw "Bayern"'s game out of the window (this is acknowledged for Mayer's worst game ever). OK, "Ajax" would most probably have won either way but what I'm trying to say is that the whole media fuss surrounding the ""Orange"" somehow made them believe in their (alleged) invincibility without seeing that somebody else was getting ready in the shadows to take on them.
@13muller94 жыл бұрын
@@MrTyzhen That is an interesting point. On the other hand, I have watched the Ajax v. Juve 1973 final several times and to the best of my recollection, Ajax created more goal scoring chancers than Juve. One of basic rules in any sport is never to underestimate your opponent, and maybe after scoring an early goal, as you said the media fuss about the Dutch superiority, made them to unconsciously feel they have already won the W. Cup after scoring their goal. You can see as soon as the Dutch players celebrate the goal, Cruyff's hands gesture is telling them something like: don't get overexcited; we still have 89 minutes to go. I read an article years ago that Stefan Kovac, the Ajax manager in 1972-73 seasons was a FIFA official in the 1974 W. Cup final. During the half time, he wanted to go to the Dutch dressing room, and tell Reinus Michele the way to get back into the game and win it, is to ask Cruyff play in front of Beckenbauer and therefore disrupt the natural way the German team was playing, getting its marching orders from the German captain (Kovac had used that tactic in the 1973 home game against Bayern, and by the way you are right that although the gap between the two teams were not a 4 goal difference, nevertheless Ajax would have advanced to semi final), but after having second thought, Kovac decided not to visit the Dutch manager because he felt as a FIFA agent, he had to remain neutral. I don't know if he had advised the Dutch, it would have made any difference. One thing I observed watching the body language of Cruyff is: after Muller scores his goal, Cruyff looks shattered as if he already knows his team is going to lose. Before the final game, no team had been able to score even a single goal against the Dutch (Bulgaria's goal was an own goal scored by Rudi Krol), and they never fell behind any team, and then all of a sudden in the final, the ball hit their net two times. I think, that fact probably shattered their self confidence and spirit to the point that Cruyff who is naturally a calm player on the field, lost his temper and after the half time on the way to the dressing room accused Jack Taylor the referee of ruining the final by the way he had run the game, and he got a yellow card for that. In addition, the final was in W. Germany, and playing in home soil is a huge advantage for any host country, as Beckenbauer himself has admitted.

Nice analysis of crucial moments in the game. That 1974 final is one of the most interesting in football history. It was declared to the "impossible defeat of the great Dutch team of 1974 due to a Holzenbein dive" but if you look at it in a deep analysis, all in all the Germans won that final fair and square and the Dutch were more than lucky it was only a 2-1 defeat. It could have been easily a 4-1 for Germany. All questionable referee decisions, and there were a lot at this day, except one (the german penalty) were against the Germans. Dutch penalty likely closely outside the box, Cruyff close to a sent off´after his foul on Maier in the 2nd half, Muller and Bonhof two times clearly onside scoring respective being 2 german players vs. dutch goalie, two not given penalties for the germans, handball Suurbier (RIP) and 2nd time Holzenbein at the end. Great football.

Even though i'm a big fan of Dutch football, there's a tendency (no need to get into the why's now...) to underestimate the Germans of the era. Biggest example of all, of course, Beckenbauer, a centre back who was able to pass, score, always ready to shoot a free-kick and, most importantly and sooo different than almost any c. defender of the era, he was crucial for Bayern's and W.Germany's build up. Everything started from him. A really world class player, probably the best defender in football. We live the era of the social media where myths are established and some truths remain hidden (yes, even in football) and those things need to be pointed out//

Every player on both sides was tightly marked except for the two keepers and liberos, Arie Haan and Franz Beckenbauer. Haan was attacking in the style of Beckenbauer, though for most of the final the German ace was content to stay deep and cover. Haan was my Dutch ‘man of the match’, with Berti Vogts the pick for West Germany. Haan and Johan Neeskens kept leading attacks from the front, probing all the time, and generally the Dutch were on top, but not making it pay. Significantly, in the battle of the masters, Beckenbauer was getting far more touches of the ball than Johan Cruyff. This was where the Dutch fell down, for they needed a central striker playing upfield, and never had one. A banner carried by German fans said it all: ‘We know Bonhof, but who is Cruyff?’ More importantly, where was Cruyff on the day Holland needed him most?

Holland's tactics in the tournament of getting an early goal then sitting back and playing on the break finally caught up with them. They surrendered the initiative after scoring the penalty and couldn't get it back, and Cruyff did one of his disappearing acts as he often did on the big occasion around that time. It's doubtful whether the Germans would have won the World Cup anywhere else but at home, however on the day they deserved to win with some fine football, all be it a swan song.
@johnpacino0073 жыл бұрын
Neil Turnham Am not sure how you can say, " Cruyff did a disappearing act, as he normally did at that time "...That's a crazy statement, without merit... He created the Dutch first goal, from a starting point in his own half. Going on a dazzling solo run, that ended in a penalty to his team. He engineered quite a few goalscoring chances second half, that the Dutch uncharacteristically failed to capitalize on. And all the time, he had Bertie Vogi doing his best nasty impression of Nobby Styles, man-marking on him... Cruyff powered Ajax to three European Cup trophy wins. Went to a struggling Barcelona & powered them to winning the league. Was the best player at the 1974 world cup & put in a tournament display, i rank second to Maradona's all time, numero uno 1986 world cup tournament performances... He's the best European player I've seen & the only European player I'd put amongst my all time five players that make up a quadrant of South American greats...Pelé, Di Stéfano, Maradona, Messi.
@Ruda-n4h3 жыл бұрын
@@johnpacino007 Dear John let me explain. I am not trying to be deliberately anti-Cruyff - I remember him well and he could really play and had a tremendous facility but I try to be honest and look at trees for what they are rather than be over-owed by forests. My point is that I think he really only ‘did it’ himself before he became a household name. By 1973 he was no longer the out and out centre forward he had been in the mid to late 1960s. He didn’t want to go in where it hurts anymore and was content to drop back into midfield, apart from one season at Barcelona (as you mentioned) and intermittently at the 1974 World Cup Finals, plus the odd international. I didn't see much of him at Barca in the 70s and I don’t consider his time in America or second spell in a poor Dutch league relevant. Like many players of that era he only did the minimum required to ensure his side won. For me, the greatest players must play for the full 90 minutes, not confining themselves to brilliant flashes that bring goals and long rest periods in between. They say that power corrupts, and so it does and in football there is another devil . . . money. When a player has acquired enough money he quite naturally starts to think that keeping his legs in one piece is more important than entertaining the fans, and knowing that there are opponents who will kick him if he turns it on, for too many of the past lived on their reputations. Some got away with it for years and that includes Best, Eusebio, Maradona and even Pele to an extent. Di Stefano never did this which is one reason why I rate him number one all time (as well as having the best all round skills). I don’t watch football now so I can’t comment on Messi. And you are quite right Nobby Stiles was horrible - the worst kind of 1960s/70s 'ball winner' which is a euphemism for kicking people.
@johnpacino0073 жыл бұрын
@@Ruda-n4h I think we agree on many points. I consider Di Stéfano second only to Pelé. Both, were the two most complete players I've ever seen. Reason why I put Don Alfredo number 2 is because, we never got to see him on the world cup stage. I believe to be the GOAT. You have to win the *_biggest_* trophy in your field & in football, that's the world cup. O'Rei Pelé won it *_three_* times. Far more, than any other great player anyone cares to mention... Could Muhammad Ali have called himself " the greatest" if he never won the World heavyweight boxing title? Could Michael Jordan have been the king of basketball, if he never won the NBA World Series? Or Roger Federer being the tennis greatest, if he never won Wimbledon & the US Series? All these factors have to come into the summation, when making assessments of the greatest in the different fields... Regarding Cruyff. I happen to think he played his best football between 1973 to 1979, when he rebooted , Don Alfredo's 1950s, roving positional plays. What he showed in the 1974 world cup, was how Don Alfredo would have played in a world cup, but Di Stéfano would have played with more fire power in the forward area's... In that Final against Germany, Di Stéfano would have taken on the responsibility to not only defend, but to build the play from midfield. But crucially, to get in & around the opposition box, to get onto the end of crossess or passes to rifle in shots or headers to score... That's where Cruyff went wrong in that Final. He was too reliant on playing players in to score, rather than taking it upon himself more to drive into the German box to score. You said Cruyff only did the briefest of what was necessary. I don't agree there. He pretty much bossed every match at the 1974 world cup, barring the final. That was arguably the greatest German team ( from 1972 to 1974) & having home advantage in the final, gave them significant home advantage. So Cruyff was always going to have his work cut out, trying to lead his country to victory... Still for me. Cruyff was the most dazzling, complete European player, I've ever seen.
@Ruda-n4h3 жыл бұрын
@@johnpacino007 Dear John - a very good assessment of Di Stefano which sums up my criticism of Cruyff at this time perfectly - he didn't get into the box enough to score himself. In this match, the biggest of his career he should of taken responsibility as captain and set an example to the rest of the team by doing this - the Germans were absolutely there for the taking after the first minute. I found his attitude mystifying. The same thing happened in the European Cup Final of 1973 (when Ajax got away with it after Rep's early goal), a crucial qualifier for this World Cup against Belguim, when the Dutch nearly got knocked out, and the European Championship semi-final against Czechoslovakia in 1976, when again he was very disappointing when it mattered most. In his defence he may have been physically suffering on these occasions. By 1977 I had repositioned him in my mind for what he wanted to be which was a midfield general.
@johnpacino0073 жыл бұрын
@@Ruda-n4h That was a fair assessment of Cruyff's shortcomings, in some crucial matches. Nevertheless. He was the best player at the 1974 world cup. He came into that tournament feted, as the player that had taken over O'Rei Pelé mantle, as the world's no. 1 player & delivered... Personally, i think the biggest cost to Cruyff after 1974, was his absence from the 1978 world cup. Understandable at the time, as his family had a kidnapping assult, a few months before the tournament... Am convinced that Holland would have won that world cup with him. Argentina needed extra time to beat a Cruyff-less Holland. With him there. They'd have gotten the job done in the 90 minutes. By the way. What's your all time, top five players ? For me it's: 1- Pelé 2- Di Stéfano 3- Messi 4- Maradona 5- Cruyff

Both penalties were right. Second muller's goal too (I'm holland 74 team fan).

The netherlands came with zero resistence, all they achieved was as a weak peanlty. Four stars on the German shirt, just remember that!

Difficult to decide, but I think it was a penalty. Jansen wanted to play the ball with his right foot, but he didn' t manage to reach it, and afterwards he touched Hölzenbein with his left leg (better to see in the replay), otherwise Hölzenbein might have reached the ball.

@@egon4593 Holzenbein dived over a tackle that didn't touch him, so it's really not a penalty. He was well known for it in the Bundesliga and did it in the previous game against Poland, diving over Wladyslaw Zmuda's tackle.
