Just came in and saw this up.Nice!Still working on my 20hp idle issue.Think I got all my vac leaks taken care of and rebuilt fuel pump at same time and may have regretted that.Had my fuel pressure gauge still hooked up from before with old pump.Presure on that was steady at high rpm and lower rpms.Pressure was bouncing around and actually went to "0" and back up an then it was 2psi inconsistent.Pump worked on bench the way they say to test it after rebuild.Took boat on lake yesterday ad worked on tuning it at dock and thought I got it after using the service bulletin info.It was idleing good and running good on high rpm.Then later onafter siting fishing for 1-2 hours I primed it and started right up then died.Only way to keep it idleing was to pull primer 1/2 way out, but then I think I was flooding it?It would give a burp.big blue puff off smoke and die.Any thoughts on this?
@THISOLDOUTBOARD16 жыл бұрын
hey. r u sure the service bulletin applies to that motr? and it sounds like your carb is clogging up or the float needle is sticking, that may be why the pressure is all over the place. i would imagine the primer half way open, would be floodind it out.
@wish2fish376 жыл бұрын
I did reach out to Kramden and he said typically that bulletin referred to engines that were idleing good but having the isues with low speed.Thought I would try moving the link/sync and put it back if needed.I did re-do my link sync now.Tore carb back off and cleaned out ports and passages short of removing welch plugs.Even took fuel pump apart incase I did something wrong there, but it looks ok.Now to try and run it again.

Hey. I was going to suggest that you try and ask him about it, I would also like to find out more about this gas recirculation thing he said they added to these engines, just out of curiosity. It must be something designed on the inside because the outside looks like every other small outboard I have ever worked on and cant find a thing about it on the innerweb, except the bigger motors its a very common thing. I remember one of my early 70's 25 horse had a gas recirculation hose on it coming out from the intake and into the bypass cover along with the usual oiler hose that runs up to the top bearing on the crank shaft, I think it was a 72, anyway I guess you have to be a service tech to get the bulletins and such. There are some out on the web but its mostly stuff from the fifties. I'm glad you pulled/cleaned the carb and hope that is the only problem, but things can be deceiving, I had a sweet 25, very similar to the my 30, and that thing would only idle if I held two fingers over the carb like a choke about 2/3 of the way closed, anyway I would swear up and down after cleaning it 3-4 times, that there was nothing wrong with that thing, it even looked brand new and there had to be something else causing it not to idle but I couldn't find anything, so one day I took an older carb I had and swapped all the linkage to it and low behold it purred like a kitten, just idled beautiful, I couldnt believe it. I also had to plug the small hose from the primer pump because the older carb didnt have the hose nipple for it. The primer pump still worked with just the one hose, no problem. I spent a week trying to figure this thing out, it drove me crazy! I ended up tearing that carb apart to the point where it was unusable trying to find out what was stuck in it, never did find a thing. So the moral of the story is...

I saw OM Fishing did a video on Recirculation just recently that I watched.On my motor now....Carb. clean ...pulled rebuilt fuel pump apart to check I did not screw that up...I also took off a inline fuel filter I had on my hose coming up to connection at motor and I also cleaned out screen on pick up tube in my duratank...My local River is very high due to all the ran we got last week, but I was able to back boat own into water on trailer.Pulled primer two times and Eureka!!!Started first pull.I was waiting for all the knocking backfiring and stalling and it never happened.Purred like a kitten.Was able to adjust the idle screw on side of motor down to where I wanted it and put in gear and fiddled with that some more and it ran great.Only ran it for about 5 or so minutes.Never touched my slow speed/idle mixture.Had it about 1 3/4 out and left it for now.I hope it stays this way.Hope if there was something in carb. I got it out.I did have another nice carb for this but sold it this past winter...ugh..This motor always seemed alittle lean, but ran descent.Tops of pistons were light and plugs were white as could be.That may be because of the air leaks I had also.Now the plugs are dirty and tops of pistons are black.May be alittle rich?thanks

I like the way these 15 HP outboards work, they seem to both troll well and go pretty fast when you need to move across the water. If you should find a Johnson/Evinrude short shaft 15 HP say 1974-79, I'd be interested. I live in Maine, but my brother is in Hernando, so I'd have him check it out.

How do you clean up your really dirty old motors?
@THISOLDOUTBOARD14 жыл бұрын
Hey. I Use Purple Power Degreaser and a stiff paint brush. Then I use the pressure washer if its got caked up grease on it. It works pretty good and will even take off old oxidized paint. Thanks for watching !

Have you ever made a high performance outboard out of a 9.9 or. 15hp looks like it would be fun these motors look a lot easier to work on then my 9.5 it’s still got the drive shaft stuck and hanging from a tree
@THISOLDOUTBOARD15 жыл бұрын
Hey. no I haven't but I've thought about it. Did you spray the PB Blaster on it. Try the vise grips and a hammer! thx

THIS OLD OUTBOARD I did man I tried everything it hanging from a tree for 2 weeks now I bang on it every day I don’t want to drill a hole in it and press it out I want to just put this motor back together and get rid of this and get a 15hp or a 9.9 plenty of parts and performance parts wisco makes pistons for it and Bronson reeds

You have a couple of these things going on at once, hard to keep up! These original ones were plagued with plug fouling issues, what plugs are you using? Regardless of the plug fouling, I always felt the original runs ran nicer than the later ones. Do you have a gearcase for this one, are on you on "curb alert", one is bound to turn up. Do you ever scavenge around marinas/repair places when they are cleaning up/out?
@THISOLDOUTBOARD16 жыл бұрын
hey. this is all the same 15, the ''curb alert''/flippin the 15, I finally started building the curb alert once some parts finally started to show up on craigslist, It's in the ''coming up next flippin the 15'' video. I got the gear case on yesterday , and trying to get it in the water today, and no, never get a chance to rummage around any marinas or repair places, most of those guys dont want to fool around with these old outboards . the plugs are champion L82C
