Interesting to see Colin Garwood in action for Colchester here. He was on fire for Oldham Athletic in the second half of the 1973-74 season, and was our leading scorer as we won the Third Division title. I think Jimmy Frizzell might have slipped up in selling him to Huddersfield a couple of months into the 1974-75 season, as we struggled to score goals from then on and only narrowly escaped relegation.

What a fantastic post! The debut of Glenn Hoddle - one of my all-time heroes (with Stevie Perryman). Incredibly gifted, but playing in the wrong era. On boggy pitches, being constantly clattered and at a time when 'work rate', rather than technical excellence, was the key to England selection (take a bow Ron Greenwood) - as a result never got the international recognition he deserved. You can only imagine how well he'd do playing in the modern game (with today's pitches, coaching, nutrition etc). COYS!

England and most teams then played 4-4-2 formation with two box-to-box midfielders at the center. That suited Bryan Robson and Ray Wilkins game better than Glenn's. At Spurs the 4-4-2 wàs flexible as Glenn was accompanied by two running Argentina midfielder Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa and Tony Galvin being the only winger leaving Glenn free role as a roaming playmaker.

Fantastic goal by Glenn Hoddle, my all time favourite player. The collar on that shirt he was wearing when interviewed is something else.

What was it Alf Garnett used to say? "West 'am won the World Cup" but he wasn't too far wrong. As a Pompey fan Redknapp didn't do too badly as our manager.

Hoddle was a lazy genius. He could have achieved so much more, especially internationally
