DAD! You volunteered for Saints all the time and sis and I were flag girls. You loved drum corp from being in it in the 50s and wanted the next generation to love it too. Dad was buried on MLK Day 3 years ago and I can't believe I found this video today. Shared it around the world in your memory. Bless you Mr. Perez for posting.

Incredible video, thank you for filming this. Fred Gebhardt designed the drill for The Skyliners and they went on to win DCA that year. Yes, The Muchachos should have won DCI and not DQ'ed, but....we'll never know.

Can you imagine all the prancing and rolling around these days, if they had to deal with all that mud or dust (depending on the weather and the real-grass/dirt field). I can see all those idiotic props and pits drowning in the mud as they sink into oblivion. Where is REAL Drum and Bugle Corps?

@@leonply I agree with you 100%. Today it's a three ring circus, drummers juggling, brass players wearing costumes leotards, not a real drum and bugle Corps. Three ring circus with marching bands playing through the circus. Former member of the Long Island Sunrisers 1964 through 1968. Today is March 27th 2022.

@@chance4luv I agree with you 100% I miss old-time drum and bugle Corps has both Junior and senior. No longer a drum and bugle Corps they are marching bands. When DCI started that was a decline of the activity and then DCA, both contributed to the downfall of real drum and bugle corpse, and respect and tribute to the American flag, when a color presentation was required in competition.

What can you say about the Muchachos in 75 that hasn't been said 1,000 times. Should have been DCI Champs (IMO - no offense to Madison who also blew me away - just that Hawthorne's horn line was as good, and their drumlins was historically good. Best of the generation. I thought that day would be the last time I would see St Andrews, and wham! next year the Bananas and the legend lived on.

I worked for Fleetwood Records at the time. Did the recording in Jersey City, Mixed the tape in North Bergen(Hometown), made the mother in Manhattan. Production of the record in Happauge, L.I. Sold it the following week at DCA's in Rochester. All in one week. Thought I had the master of the Muchachos, but, it was the B.S.G.K. alumni corp.(proud alumni)

One thing not mentioned in the comments was the temperature that day. Yeah, it was dusty...combined with 98F temps. That soloist by the Skyliners at the end then fainted after completing the note!

@@1911401 Johnny Grass was one of the best of all time Diane. Put Many Salort and George "Side mouth" Richardson in that elite class, and the Eddie Lawrence too. 4 of the all time great Skyliners soloists and DCA as well. From a 1973 Sunrisers baritone.

WOW, the memories... Wish the whole Sky show was shown not just the last tag... We cooked that afternoon, in all senses of the word, it was way hot and humid, and our show was on. First time we played The Elks Parade instead of Mambo and the audience went totally nuts. Funny how when you were marching you could "ignore" the dust (or mud depending on the year...) and still do your thing (although in 74 I left my left buck in a mud hole going into West Side Story). Love to see the kids in BandCorp these days do a show there, now that would be funny! Field not aligned with the stands so your orientation was very tricky (noticed greatly in the Hurcs crossing pattern). It was an art and a science to march that field. But it was THE DREAM so you loved it anyway

Sky indeed cooked that day. Prior to that show the corps was just good. That day, in the heat and dust he corps almost set the place on fire. By the middle of Elks' Parade I figured out who was going to win DCA. Hard to believe it's 45 years ago.

A couple of shows in 63, most of 66, and the Dream in 75 were the best I ever saw Sky, and face it... Sky's horn line was to those days what Madison was from the late 70s to the mid-90s - sheer awesome power. I had seen them earlier that year (I was marching with Sun - first year back from overseas) and was shocked, blown away in fact by the job they did at the Dream. That day I predicted Sky would win DCA. Between Sidemouth and Ruben, Eddie, Conga, and the rest of the players in each of their sections, that was just a monster horn line.. Good to be you guys that year...
