Surprisingly, the passenger compartment performed rather well

Most impressive thing is to see the rear 3/4 get crumpled because ( I guess , what do you think? ) of the roof structure transmitting energy. Some say this is because the car is pulled by a cable attached to the rear floor. Maybe .

Cool and super reliable little car. Wouldn’t want your kids in one though. Head-strike central. And femur-snap hotel. Last thing to go through the drivers mind during the crash : the steering column…Imagine how they went with a few years of salt-road corrosion. All the good stuff!! Rose coloured glasses…. From when we didn’t know better.

Ouch. That didn't go well. They've come a long way.

It’s baffling to be me that you can be wearing a seatbelt, with a shoulder harness, and still move so far forward that you smash the windshield. What is the seatbelt for on these old cars?

My uncle's wife died from a seat belt in a 90 Ford cougar. His side was hit. Her side was fine.

@ouch1011. Seat belts are elastic to lower peak forces on the torso. Head/steering wheel contact is part of the program as the head is not restrained by the belt.

Better to hit your head on the dash than fly through the windscreen at full pace. This was the technology available then. Now we have seatbelt pre-tensioners to reduce this effect.

@@peterj5751a Volvo at that time had pre tensioners.

@ in the mid 70’s? I thought these didn’t come around with anyone until later 80’s. I could be wrong of course.

had they had the rear glass up, or in, assuming it was just down, would the back end have crumpled like that?
@kz1000ps29 күн бұрын
I can't imagine the glass was adding that much rigidity? But that still leaves the question of why the hell the rear crushed so much
@compu8529 күн бұрын
The crumpling is likely from the weight of the measurement equipment bolted to the trunk floor.

I think the vehicle is being pulled from a cable attached to the rear floor. After the impact the car is still being pulled forward while at the same time being pushed backwards by the test vehicle, this is what causes the rear end to buckle I think.

ouch.. breaking the steering wheel with your chin! Well, not everything from the past is better than in the present..! Lovely little car though..
