Great job getting it running and driving again. Good to see you taking your son with you for the first test drive. That definitely infected him with the Land Rover virus for the rest of his life.

Poor little guy, lost forever, like me... Once the smell of oil mixed with hot electicals enters your nostrils, the hummmmm of the transfer case, the grinddddd of the gears crunch in your ears, the wobbly rusted doortops deafening you, and that ever present fear of "is it going to stop", the black grime off the old steering wheel on your hands, oil between your toes,... 🤔🤔 it seems to work up into your brains, dulling all common sense, and gets stuck in your heart.... Do any Land Rover physiologists exist, I wonder.... "I wonder, how many times you had broken, and wonder, what will be next, and wonder, wonder I do... ..." Rip, S.R.

"The brakes work ish" is standard. About 34 years ago I bought a derelict series 3 88" SW off a local farm for my rural property, in much the same condition as yours. Our property was much like your's too, only in Canada, and the kids loved riding around in the Land Rover. I still use it and now they do too. It is not much fun in modern traffic but driving around the countryside with it is just lovely. My recommendation is do it right once, buy the galvanized chassis soon, I spent far too much time welding up mine over the years and never looked back after changing it. Get parabolic springs(from Rocky Mountain Products in Vancouver, he's an ex Royal Marine and makes great stuff) which makes the ride quite nice, a high torque starter and electronic ignition made it reliable to use. SP make nice galvanized door kits. Thanks for a great video and I hope your really enjoy your Land Rover. Cheers!

Hi thanks for your comment👍 The old landys are wonderful things. It’s already been quite useful around the property doing a few jobs and I’m thinking I might get a snow plough for it for when winter comes. Yeah the chassis is something I’m going have to have a think about. Ideally I would like to keep the original chassis and I don’t mind welding but if I find safety will be compromised it will definitely be getting a new one fitted.

Good looking car. :) Oil the springs and load it up a bit, then drive over rough bumps. That will loosen them up.

Subbed for more ... you can buy new frames for the door bottoms and use the old skin. Make sure you paint something on the steel to stop the corrosion. Nice work... I'd find some nice soft springs unless your planning to tow when the galv chassis goes on. Nice truck for a lad to learn to drive in... you can drive almost anything after!

Doesn’t seem to be blowing any smoke, looks like a good engine, great work

Thanks for the comment. Yeah the engine seems to be spot. I was quite surprised. I don’t have any history on it, perhaps it’s been rebuilt in the past. It’s got 93000 miles on it so I was expecting the engine to be quite tired.

Nice truck..i love the deep dish wheel rims at the end of the video..looks like an ex FC one? Cool..

The wheels are cool. They’re Britparts FC style wheel…8” wide😁 Much better than putting on a set of wolfs or modular wheels I think.

Galvanised chassis, mechanical soundness, original patina are about the perfect mix now for a series landrover. Would you get away with saving the door skins and replacing the frames? Great video bud, I've restored a lightweight and am making memories with my two young sons, they adore the land rover.

Hi, Thanks for the comment. Oooh I do like a lightweight👌 I was looking for one for a while but they’re not easily found up my way. I lucked out with this one... I found it on my neighbours farm. Yeah old landy’s are great for getting kids involved and making memories. I can’t wait to get mine on the road and start making more memories with my boy. I was actually thinking about doing just that with the doors. I just hope I can unfold the skins without them disintegrating 🤣 before I try I’ll have a new set of doors on standby though. If I can get the old skins off in one piece I’ll then remove the skin off the new doors and transplant the old skins onto them…that’s the plan anyway🤞

Suspension might be better if springs were given a coat of old engine oil. 😊
@RetroModified
@RetroModified Жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for the suggestion. I’ll give it a try for now but I think these springs are already well past it. The springs are already swollen with corrosion between the leaves and quite flattened out on one side. Definitely time for some new ones I think.

😂 Yep I can see me having the same love/hate relationship with this one. I haven’t done enough on it yet to develop the hate part so far but it will come I’m sure.

Cor makes me feel old. I drove a brand new lwb truck cad the same age as yours and a brand new swb same as yours about a year later. Just think your son will still be driving it when he retires. Have you got the starting handle they are fun to try.

I hope my son will still have it when he gets older. That’s the great thing about old landys…they can literally last forever with a bit of love. I do have the starting handle. It came in very handy when I first got it home…pulled the spark plugs, oil in the bores and rolled the engine over with it. I’ve got an old dumper with a lister diesel in it. That’s given me some good hand cranking practice 💪🤣

Wonderful work. Good to see your son taking part. Maybe a good idea to fit a roll bar and some proper seatbelts. It might roll down a bank one day.

Hi, Thanks for the comment. Yep I completely agree…decent seatbelts and a roll bar will both be coming in the future.

Great vid as I got some kicks to finally start my RHD 88 marine blue 1976 Series 3 project . Do the 8x16 rims stay a little bit off the wing panel? ( Front/rear) . What about the driving circle? Looks great.
@RetroModified
@RetroModified 8 ай бұрын
Hi, Thanks for your comment. The wheels and tyre tread are within the wheel arches front and rear. The only part that does stick out past the arches are the tyre sidewalls. I don’t know for sure if the wheels will clear the bodywork when off-roading as the old suspension had rusted up solid and was not giving any suspension travel at all. For the turning circle unfortunately I can’t comment on how they compare with standard wheels as I never drove it on its standard wheels but it does turn fine and the steering isn’t to heavy. Happy new year!
