Good video. I have 2 of these mercury 200 20hp motors. One long and one short shaft. Picked them up at an early estate sale.

question, my 79 mercury 20hp is hard to crank i just rebuilt the carb now it will crank, but i have to give it some gas to keep it running. i did notice like you that the idle adjust screw is longer than original. i screwed it in flush, and backed it out 2 turns since that where the one was that i pulled out. i cant seem to get it to idle thinking about putting the original back in. also the float in my manual says to set it at .25 +- 1/64 which is there i believe your other video said something different. the hoses at 11:01 coming out of the side of the crank case the bleed hoses can you tell me exacly what they are for mine were dry rotted and i have ordered new i swear it smelled like gas spraying out the cracks cant tell for sure but it did smell like it but i have to remove the transfer port cover to get to it so i ordered a gasket for that. any help on any of this would be much appreciated.

I have the exact same 79 mercury 20, just ordered carb kit I’ve had it for over 20 years and had minimal repairs runs like a champ. I do need the kill switch wire that runs from switch to coils. I guess I could use similar gauge wire but needs to insulated.

I have a 1979 Mercury 20 just like the one you were taking apart. Mine has a badly warped head/top cover (not really a cylinder head more of just a cover) and was wondering if you still had the head from this video to sell to me haha. Thanks for uploading these videos they are super helpful.

Hi Mike, I know what you mean on waiting on parts or marine supplies when ordered online. I ordered a 10oz tube of Lubriplate C105 marine grease from Brownell back in your neck of the woods. They put it on a Fedex truck that took 3 weeks to get here. Nobody around here sells it by the tube just by the case.

hi, do you have a manual with technical specifications for this outboard motor? can you share?
@badgerbob22262 жыл бұрын
some times when a motor is stored on there side or up side down the water from the water pump and exsaust housing can seep in to the pistons and lock up the motor, i hope that makes sense ? keep up the great work sir.

I'd say the gaskets in the manifold side cover we gone and letting water into the cylinders from the water jackets....hence the rust.

I just bought a 1971 20hp thunderbolt with the red color, are these pin and condenser or are they electronic ignition?

Mercury was nefarious at that time for building it different (from OMC) for the sake of difference. Where operating a single latch would allow complete access to most OMC’s power heads, on the Merc, you would have to deal with a buckle and about 10 bolts/screws of at least 2 sizes. Working with those feels like designs were afterthoughts. Stay safe and be merry !

making very different is for sure what they did, not sure it was the best idea to make it soooo much different. Thanks for watching

Why is my pull cord kind of hard to pull and retracting extremely slow. It’s 34 degrees where I’m at. Will this have an affect on it? It’s been sitting for a couple years as well but when I tried yesterday it fired up after a few pulls and didn’t have this problem I’m experiencing today. It was a bit warmer yesterday but not much

You guys don't have a pull start assembly for a Mercury 200 20hp I think it is a 1983 version. I stripped the bolt of course. I was only going to tighten the spring and I messed up the whole thing, tried to make a bolt because I cannot find one. sigh...

Best line so far when he finds out they put the reed valves on the crank shaft: "There's a lot of engineering going on here." LMAO Leave it to ivory tower engineers to "improve" things so much that you can't easily fix them. It's far better when those who have to do the regular maintenance on these engines design them.
