I just picked one of the exact engines up in a abandoned storage room. I was thinking about rebuilding it and learning how. I dont know anything about outboards.

I have a 9.8 Mercury 1976 vintage. The water from the tell tale gets warm immediately and hot within a couple of minutes. I replaced the impeller which was basically gone. I’ve never had an outboard that discharged hot water like that. Any ideas on what to check? It idles fine.

The throttle butterfly “post” and shift shaft seal/housing are both common spots to find cracks on that era of merc 7.5, 9.8, 20s. I see it pretty often.

Dealing with a Japanese Mariner 20hp 2 stroke, which I believe is a 1976 tohatsu outboard 653, is the beginning number on the plate. I have no spark, and this is a pull start. Any help anyone can offer here would be greatly appreciated!

How do you adjust the low idle. I have a motor here that dies within like 15-20 seconds after starting it but will stay running when in gear with a higher idle.

My 1984 50 is driving me nuts. Carbs rebuilt. Revs out fine on muffs. In the water wont go high rpm. So. Marina told me my tank is probably clogged since its a 1964 steel tank. Also tank was set up for 5/16 line when the 50 takes 3/8. So 149 bucks later I leave with a new tank, lines, primer bulb and fuel filter. Have not tried it yet. Fella on here had a clogged exhaust. If the new tank dont work its my next step.

These have some strange spline sizes, # of splines is what you need to begin your search. thanks for watching

It's an 8 spline. Not finding a whole lot that I'd be sure of online. Mine I believe is a 9 inch prop. Most of the applications I'm seeing online cover up to a 15 HP motor.

Mercury (with some exceptions) made reasonnably good motors but the company was notorious to, for cost cutting imperatives, come out with all kinds of different designs for any given power range with the result that 5 years down the line, parts for individual motors, weren't available anymore. That seemed to be corporate policy as it didn't matter, consumers would just come back and buy a new motor from them since they were priced lower than OMC. And buyers thought they got a good deal !!!

The lower unit for that outboard can be had , if you want me to I can check out my sources and locate a good housing or a complete !

I would have the gear case tig welded then use your Machinist skills to re-cut the hole And make a motor out of this thing I think you can do it I know you can get her done

9.8’s are known to have bad ignition parts and those parts aren’t cheap !

I have the exact same motor that I bought ten years ago but it needs work. Too bad that I live in Canada because I'd sell the lower unit as it's in great shape. In addition, I used aluminium (jb) weld on a shifter on a 1969 20 Merc and it worked fine on a small crack.
