My grandfather saw me playing as Poland against Russia in NHL 99 when I was a little kid, and he told me that Russia was so good that they almost always beat Poland. But he told me that there was one game that Poland beat the Russians, in 1976. He told me all about it and how crazy it was, people all over his town went nuts. I always kept that in the back of my mind, and years and years later I decided to look it up today. Beautiful win. I wish hockey was more popular in Poland and the national team got a lot better. My cousin currently plays for them so it's great being able to see someone in my family on the ice representing our country! 🇵🇱

Not even close. Hockey was never slightly close to be considered a top 3/5 most popular sport in Poland. 2 World Cup bronze medals and the Olympics gold medal in football between 72 and 82 have been and will be, for a LONG time, the biggest achievements in Polish sport history. 2 gold medals in a row at the last 2 Volleyball World Championships or 2 medals in a row at 2007 and 2009 Handball World Championships have been huge too. Unless we're talking about the biggest upsets, then yes, the victory over Soviets would probably be up there among the top :)

I was the teammate with Wieslaw Jobzyck, in Germany 1987-88 , I asked him what was your biggest game in hockey. He simply said we beat Russia in 1976 and I scored a couple of goals. I found out much later he scored three goals and the game winner. I have never found another player that has ever scored three goals against Russia

True but the difference is - the US was already a well established team. Out of 20 American players only 3 never played in the NHL or WHA. They defeated Czechoslovakia 7:3 before and were undefeated in their group too. Polish team on the other hand was made of the complete amateurs who played in Polish or German leagues at most. Yet they were able to defeat the greatest team in hockey history.

Hockey World Championships 1976 were special, to me personally as a a 9yo Finn and many other ways: - Olympic Games in Innsbruck ´76 were the first I really watched, and since Canada and Sweden did not participate as a protest against Eastern Block "Army system" (= nothing but hockey, still not pro?) I was convinced as the whole nation about the first hockey medal - Germans (which we beat 5-3) getting finally the bronze after almost re-inventing the calculus itself was such a big disappointment we saw many of our key-players simply skipping the Katowice '76: potentially bad move because Canada was coming back to the games next year and 2 teams of 8 would drop to B-category - Also also Canada Cup '76 supertournament was waiting for Europe's 4 best teams against Canada's and USA's best professionals - Soviets had probably their worst year ever, lasting just barely above Sweden while Czechoslovakia showed to be Masters of Europe and even more so in Canada Cup '76 - But in "b-category" almost all the games were thrillers - culminating to the all-decisive Poland-West Germany and THIS is the match I like to see again after almost 50 years... - We Finns have played A-level hockey since 1957 which nobody can deny

As a diehard Soviet fan from USA, this is EMARASSING!! This is WORSE than the loss at Lake Placid 1980. Ihope Motherland invaded Poland the next day. LOL, NAH, only joking. I think I just saw the greatest 20 second in Polish Hockey history, aside from the greatest win in Polish history. The two miracle saves on Mikhailov and the the goal on Tretiak all in 20 seconds??? Also the game was IN POLAND!!! This was the opening game of the tournament. WIth the Czech showing at the Canada Cup this must have been the best year of Czech hockey to this point and a Silver at the Olympics. Poland played the next day and were DESTROYED 12-0 by Czech. NOW, back to the Red Machine, this was the first game, oviously they did not take Poland seriously playing Sidelnikov and after this game he never should have played for the Machine ever again. I really have to bring Kulagin to task here. First he played Sidelnikov in the opener? Set a tone for the tournament and play your best. Now it turns out Tretiak sadly gave up the winning goal which is NOT justice. On the 6th goal if Lutchenko is going to stand in front of the shot then block it and this Jober kid lets off a Polish missle, even the GWG 5th goal was nice and a very difficult save to make coming in col like Tretiak did. Hell Vlady had to make 5 great saves just to keep the Union in the game. This is where Kulagin REALLY mad bad coaching moves. A. Was Petrov injured?/ Maltsev plays center and wing,, Kharlamov I never saw before this game play center and he lost 95% of face-offs. The first line should have been Maltsev centering Boris and Valary. B. So Maltsev comes off the Shadrin line but Kulagin puts Shalimov at center and NOT SHADRIN???? WHY??? Yakushev is used to Shadrin his center, NOT Shalivmov. OMG. So Kulagn screws up two lines because Petrov does not play. Where in the hell was Boris Alexanrov??? Anisin?? Lebedev??? Kulagin did not move Shadrin to center until the third, Kharlamov is lsing draw after draw and Maltsev is a great cener WHY??? Also Vasiliev wearing #21?? This goalie who I do not know his name played the game of his life and he still gave up 4. HIs 3 saves on Mikhailov and the first save on the Yakushev breakaway...I m still in shock. I always knew about this game, watching this game is a duty, rite of passage for all Russian hockey fans but this is worse than I thought. A HORRIBLE job by Kulagin, Kharlamov should NEVER play center I wish I was in the locker room to hear whatever Mikhailov said. The next 5 games the Union blew out every team except for the loss to the Champions Czechs 4-3. This game is 10 times WORSE than the Lake Placed loss. In those two losses the lost to the host country. TIkkonov in 1980 made two mistakes, in this game Kulagin made mistakes all throughout the game. Let it be known that the Red Machine would not win another World Champ until 1978 and the next time they played Poland in the World Championships they played them in 1979, Soviets' Union was the host, they repeated as Champs and got their revenge on Poland in the opening game 7-0. Here is the 1976 Wiki. Remember the 1980 USA team players collectively won 5 Stanley Cups and played over 1700 NHL games, this Polish team...THAT was their Stanley Cup. Also, why is the team allowed to bench clear for a goal that does not even end the game? That should be a delay of game. Skill difference wise upsets like miracle on ice happen some times but the fact US won the gold medal made it important. But this game is by far the biggest upset I have ever heard about skill level wise.

Мы проиграем ЧМ 76, ЧМ77 далее приз Ивестия в Москве 77 уже при Тихонов Чехам 3:8! На ЧМ78 в Праге Мы проиграем Чехам 4:6 затем в 3 периоде Канаде 1:2 а Нам надо было их выиграть а затем победить Чехов с разницой в две шайбы!!! Мы сделали это СССР Канада 4:2 СССР Чехословакия 3:1!!! ДВА года от Польши 4:6 до Канады 3 периоде 1:2 самые неудачные в 70 годы!!!

Участники этой игры с советской стороны ничего вразумительного об этом матче не говорили даже спустя десятилетия. Всё что-то вроде "ноги не бегали". Так что причина неясна. Пищевое отравление? What is perhaps the most surprising thing about the outcome of the game is that this was the year ( 1976 ) that saw the Red Army and Soviet Wings teams tour the West vs NHL teams....and perform very well. Team Poland wouldn't have been expected to come to the West and do that. Yet the Pole team torches the Russian netminders here.
