I still get chills watching these three games. This was the heyday of hockey. Look at that first power play unit for Canada: Lemieux-Gretzky-Messier-Coffey-Bourque. That's almost unfair. 🙂

Hockey World Championships 1976 were special, to me personally as a a 9yo Finn and many other ways: - Olympic Games in Innsbruck ´76 were the first I really watched, and since Canada and Sweden did not participate as a protest against Eastern Block "Army system" (= nothing but hockey, still not pro?) I was convinced as the whole nation about the first hockey medal - Germans (which we beat 5-3) getting finally the bronze after almost re-inventing the calculus itself was such a big disappointment we saw many of our key-players simply skipping the Katowice '76: potentially bad move because Canada was coming back to the games next year and 2 teams of 8 would drop to B-category - Also also Canada Cup '76 supertournament was waiting for Europe's 4 best teams against Canada's and USA's best professionals - Soviets had probably their worst year ever, lasting just barely above Sweden while Czechoslovakia showed to be Masters of Europe and even more so in Canada Cup '76 - But in "b-category" almost all the games were thrillers - culminating to the all-decisive Poland-West Germany and THIS is the match I like to see again after almost 50 years... - We Finns have played A-level hockey since 1957 which nobody can deny

How many Soviet teams are there ? - - Or were there back then ? - - Was this considered a great Soviet team ? - - What is this 1976 so called super series ? - - Never heard of all this ! What is this ? - - How did I miss this ! This game along should be up there in rankings with the 1972 U.S.A.VS. U.S.S.R. Summit Series !

Haven't seen this game since watching it live. The 76 Rangers were not a very good team. If I remember correctly, most of the game the Russian team was playing like they were the only team on the ice and the Rangers were chasing them or getting skated around. I'll have to watch it again to see if my 48 year old memories are accurate.

What is still most shocking and baffling to this day 44 years later is the NHL Buffalo Sabres Team blowing out the USSR Moscow Red Army premiere Club 6-1 and Team USA College Kids beating this same USSR National Team 4-3 less than a year after these games were played. The USSR National Team Offense Scoring during this time period was so deadly good it was not unusual for them blowing Opponents by 7,8 and 9 goals as they did against Canada in the WC 1977, Canada Cup 1981, The CSSR here in the Late 1970's, The NHL All-Star Team 6-0 in Game 3 of the Challenge Cup, the USA Olympic Team at Madison Square Garden 10-3 and Sweden 9-2 in the 1980 Winter Olympics.

Canada's speed hurt the Soviets. Lemieux, Coffee, Messier, Hawerchuck forced the Soviets to protect their zone and so a lot of the play was in their end. But allowing comebacks of 4-1 in the 1º game and 3-0 in the 3º one means they couldn't protect their goal and sustain an attack. Other than that, both teams were well matched.

agree. this is likely the best game in hockey history, then, now, and future. both teams stacked with HoF legends. 1972 had more national pride and emotion, but this had much more speed and excitement. so very great to have this series recorded so future generations can see why these legends became so.

The Soviets learned to play a more physical game by this point in time because when they played the Flyers in 1976 they were introduced to North American Hockey and were dominated the whole game . Even after they left the ice like little children and returned you think they would of been rested and would come out with some real energy and get something going but they were shut down and dominated for the rest of the game.

Okay, saying the Soviets aren't tough is idiocy. As in you are a frigging idiot. They walked off because the Ref was letting the Flyers get away with murder.

Why do Canadians care so much about this tournament or the summit series? Like 6 countries play in them abd only 3 are good for the time. But ol TSN watchin hockey fan makes this stuff out to be o e kf the greatest sporting moments of any nation on earth. They act like the whole world knows about Esposito and co. Its so sheltered. Its exactly why Canadian boomers know nothing about any other sport but act as if they do, because they are hockey fans hahah

I think that back then we didn’t have that high of an emphasis on fitness and health. I mean, Lafleur was smoking and the guys were drinking and just figuring they were the best. Then these guys came along and taught them a lesson. I’ve always appreciated the actual skills of hockey, like what Gretzky displayed, not that stupid spearing, boarding, intimidation etc crap.
