This was the USSR'S first game in this series. USSR would only lose once more 5-1 to the Quebec Nordiques on January 8, 1977. That game however does not seem to be available.

Unbelievable performance by the Whalers, a WHA team here. Refereeing was inconsistent. He let some tripping calls go in 3rd but overall, I guess I would rather have qan NHL official call this game. Cap Raedar outplays Tretiak! Who would have thunk it? Thank you.

I went to this game. I was stationed in the Navy in Groton and a buddy of a buddy won two tickets. Neither guys ended up going and some how I got a ticket.

Greatest game in CT hockey history, no doubt. They really outplayed a superior Soviet team, surprised a lot of people. I wish Marty Crouse of West Haven, could have played in this game. I think he would have surprised a lot of people. Marty Crouse was the best player I have ever seen.

7:20 too bad Smedsmo didn't get the goal. He sure looked good with that no-helmet Wyatt Earp-stache and future skullet going. And no disrespect: research the WHA and you'll find Dale Smedsmo as one of it's legends. I'm sure he put a few asses in the seats, whatever WHA city he played in.

In fairness to the Big Red Machine, their flight from Moscow arrived in the USA only that morning. They didn't have a chance to adjust to the jet lag. Still, for "just" a WHA team that was supposed to be far inferior to the NHL to defeat even a tired, jet-lagged Olympic & World Champion USSR National Team.

Tretiak was terrible in this game. Reminds me of how Liut and Dryden played against the Soviets. Brutal goal keeping. I never saw anything worse than Liut and Dryden.

Russians were not as good as they should have been, playing together 11 of 12 months a year, with superior conditioning and the best selection of a large country. Proof is here. Losing to a team in a league was slightly better than the minor hockey leagues in North America.

Я сейчас прямо зарыдаю от жалости! В те времена и сборная и лучшие клубы страны из Северной Америки практически не выползали! И расписание игр с учётом акклиматизации составлялись, и соответствующие лекарственные средства для облегчения последствий этой самой акклиматизации у врачей сборной в наличии имелись. Так нет же, всё равно они не выспались! А если бы выиграли, то тогда пофиг на акклиматизацию? Не катит твоя детсадовская отмазка, господин нехороший, совсем не катит! Давай уж лучше про судей или там про малые площадки. Про очень скользкий лёд тоже сойдёт. Я этого вашего нытья за свою жизнь вдоволь наслушался!

В период с 1974 по 1978 годы проводились встречи клубов НХЛ и ВХА 34 победы у ВХА и 27 у НХЛ при 7 ничьих,так что ВХА -это далеко не отстой,а после 10 часового перелета играть с одним из лучших клубов лиги действительно не просто,а чтобы вы уж окончательно возрадовались в своей глупой как унтер-офицерская жена,сообщу,что было ещё одно поражение от Квебек Нордикс 16 ,но в целом серия уверенно выйграна 6 побед при двух поражениях.
