Is the 4.5 hp the same block as the 9.9? It looks to be the same size

🌴just bought a 1977 -15 horse Johnson 2weeks ago it’s been sitting for 8 months needs some work , starter rope replaced, starter pinion gear, I’ll replace the impeller , plugs and whatever else to get it going , they seemed like a reliable motor ?

Was the 15hp carb just a regular carb or did it come in a kit and need special hardware..

It is a direct swap, the only difference between the two carbs is the throat size.

So the 9.9 carb is about a .750" throat and the 15 is about 1" but that's not all you have to change. You need to swap exhaust tubes from a square one to a round one, then and only then do you gain the added rpm's to make it a 15hp. Without the tube ya get a 9.9 with really huge fuel consumption.

Both models used the sealed inner exhaust tube in 1976. Don't know if the open tube would help much on this engine, a labor intensive "experiment". I guess it would help if he used a carburetor from a later model with the open exhaust tube. Nonetheless, it doesn't sound like this engine is winding up enough, wonder what prop he has on it...

Ebay has some but they are getting pricey and rare.
