Carter was (and is) a great and good man. While not a compelling speaker, he was very sincere. And the tone of his speech was quite moderate in tone but also populist. The Democrats would serve themselves by studying the themes of this speech. Many are relevant for today.

When results matter, doesn't really matter how great nor how good a man is. And the results of this man's presidency was as complete a disaster as any in American history. Only the current Biden administration comes close to achieving a more calamitous outcome from it's nonsensical policies. Now the Biden people have a couple of years to turn it around; however, should they maintain their current trajectory there is no doubt they will surpass the Carter administration as the worst in American history.

Fun fact. The reason why, as President Carter mentions here, he never met a Democrat President is because they were all dead. FDR (#32, 1933-1945) died in 1945, President Truman (#33, 1945-1953) died in 1972, President Kennedy (#35, 1961-1963) was assassinated on November 20, 1963 and President Johnson (#36, 1963-1969) died in January 22, 1973, a mere four years and two days after he departed office. So at the very second President Carter raised his right hand on January 20, 1977, he became the oldest living Democrat President.

I thought it was a pretty good speech. It was quite centrist. Reform the tax code, all americans who can work should work, efficient government. This speech would appeal to many Republicans. In '76 there was so much hype around him. 4 years later things were so dramatically different for him.

As I remember it, he had two basic problems aside from the obvious and oft-quoted ones (inflation and the situation in the Middle East). One, he had a lot more energy than he had agenda -- which after Nixon was exactly the opposite of what an exhausted country was looking for -- and two, he wasn't a particularly good delegator. The oft-quoted story of him taking time in the Oval Office to discuss the scheduling of the White House tennis courts is a telling example of this. Maybe inflation and Iran team up to take him down anyway, but I can't help feeling he was the absolute right guy at the absolute wrong time, more generally.

Thats exactly what Reganomics did and is still doing globally under Neo-Liberalism (TPP). He tripled the national debt and increased the deficit. He fired ATC workers because they went on strike. He was the first president to lower taxes on the upper class but raise it on the middle and lower class. Reagan administration has the most number of scandals out of every president in history. Reagan robbed billions of social security for his budget shortfalls. He was a corporate puppet who just happened to be a good actor.

From what I can gather, and I was 12 at the time he was elected, he really did not have much in the way of competition from within the Democratic Party. Not quite sure who his opponents were, but I think Gov.Jerry Brown was in the mix, as was Birch Byah. Don't know if George Wallace had thrown his hat in the ring. Surprisingly, Teddy Kennedy was not in it. If he had, would he have gone up against Ford in the autumn?
@martinkearney8045

Carter’s victory in 76 was an example of how divided and weak the Democrats were in that era. There was no single front runner and Carter was very adept at exploiting the party’s divisions and navigating the mine field of primaries. Kennedy was weakened by scandal and the party lacked any other strong figure.
@vidnut67
@vidnut67 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, Wallace did throw his hat in the ring in ‘76. In fact, going into the primary season he was favored to win the nomination. His biggest problem, however, was that he was paralyzed and running from a wheelchair at this point, and this hurt him as the primary season went on, especially after one of his aides dropped him accidentally in the process of putting him on an airplane and Wallace lay helpless for everyone to see. He had carried every county in Florida in 1972, but in ‘76 he finished third, as Carter pulled off a huge upset, and Wallace was soon finished.

Watergate, and the end of Vietnam paved the way for his candidacy. The country felt it needed his personality and style in the wake of a major scandal and war. In that vain, he was basically an accident of history. Even as the incumbent, he wasn’t a serious candidate in 1980, and he wouldn’t have been a serious candidate in 1972. He was at the right place at the right time, but he was in over his head from day one. Probably the strangest presidency in history.
